this is rushed, iâm sorry.
iâm a women of colour. iâm a woman who deeply cares about the systems of what i was subjected to and love to see it discussed and how we can support each other through it. even if we canât break the systems, we can find those to help and uplift.
the only reason why i watched the pitt is because i am a woman of colour. to see women of colour finally represent themselves in flawed manners and not be reduced to one thing is something i always wanted in media.
but you canât trust a writerâs room where the majority of them are white. this kind of writing needed writers of colour or those who knows the kind of experience these characters have gone through.
yes, the âwrite what you knowâ guideline isnât the best thing, but sometimes it touches an emotional nerve on some people who went through that.
samira mohan is me in some sense. iâm empathetic, i get frustrated if people are not treated well, i advocate for people. hell, iâm not in medicine im someone who was surrounded by so many different people that acting prejudiced towards them gets me angry.
trinity santos is also me. i was hurt at some point and itâs clear i havenât recovered from it even if i tried healing from it.
these woc, theyâre not voodoo dolls to torture or to throw to the side. these are characters that people want to see. people that are like them.
yet some of these characters are not being respected. were any of them ever respected? i think itâs only the actors that actually save them.
are the actors of color just as affected as supriya? and supriya is one of the first to actually speak out about this?
ken kirby (john shen), ayesha harris (parker ellis), shabana azeez (victoria javadi), isa briones (trinity santos), sepideh moafi (baran al-hashimi), amielynn abellera (perlah alawi), kristin villanueva (princess dela cruz), laĂŤtitia hollard (emma nolan), jalen thomas brooks (mateo diaz), alexandra metz (yolanda garcia), brandon mendez homer (donnie donahue), irene choi (joy kwon), and deepti gupta (eileen shamsi)
all of the actors of color are likely just as affected like supriya so think about it. almost all of them support palestine and are anti-ice
some of them, are used as plot devices to move the characters (who are white) forward. like emmaâs assault was used to focus on dana more than the actual person who was attacked. we constantly villainise shamsi and not see an ounce of humanity, like i know she isnât great for javadi but give a reason why
Literally my thoughts about this whole thing so far
(all of this copy and pasted) from discord:
i will say, some of the characters who represent more complex issues are also at the risk of being handled like mohan. not just as actors but in the representation of their issues.
--
Samira Mohan:
Mohan needs to be there as a doctor. To have her ending be absolute shit because fucking Wyle is leading the show, bound to be bad. Having a brown (where the actress is openly queer too) character leave the show, they HAVE to make her eventual departure a good one. She is something that Robby will never be as a mentor. She is something that Robby should've invested in instead of Langdon. Samira is that character where she's the heart of the show because her empathy is essential as a person and as a doctor. To remove that, you are not just disrespecting doctors like her, but also disrespecting those who advocate for individuals hurt by a system.
another thing, is that the other characters are also hinted to leave the show like samira. but their handlings of their arcs are already being set up poorly.
Dennis Whitaker:
To actually represent disrespected farmers is difficult. Because no one actually pays them any mind. He's already being disrespected because the writers seemingly have no idea how to handle his arc as someone who wants him to pursue rural medicine. While in character for Whitaker, is very bad execution because how they brought it up is so sudden and never hinted. Remember, he somehow represents classism. While great for the farming communities, it's bad because they literally have no idea what they're talking about. It's already hard as it is because classism is one of the hardest things to talk about if none of the writers have experienced it. Why not show him having more empathy for those who come from far away to get treated? No, they just gave him the dialysis patient and that's it and it somehow led to him being into rural medicine. He needs to have a good reason why he wants to go into it. But he does not.
Trinity:
She represents the physical side of horrible coping mechanisms. While its handled well, there is more worry of how her ending will go. Her best realistic ending is to either leave PTMC or completely change residencies because her skills are not as well built for emergency medicine. She is competent, but clearly her own mental fortitude isn't for the Pitt at all. Mental health, especially self-harm is a sensitive and rightfully so, scary topic to handle. A queer Asian-American struggling with mental health is very important to television. To show even the smartest and most competent are capable of breaking, but instead they're giving her a hard time and not allowing her to breathe as a person. I am someone who is also a queer Asian-American who struggles with mental health. I relapse in behaviors I hate even though I don't want to, even if it's mental based copings. If they somehow give her an unsatisfying ending where she doesn't seek help, it's basically demonizing/risking mental health representation among people of color.
Victoria Javadi:
Might have the best written ending because she could either be leaving medicine as a whole or choose a speciality on her own accord if it's not EM. She's also tricky because she's an Indian woman who falls into the medicine stereotype, so her ending is very much in the hands of very white writers. She has been at a risk since the beginning because she is admittedly one of the most unrealistic characters in the show. Intelligent, kind of lacking in emotional intelligence, she is a stereotype. I agree that she gotten better since season one, but she is still at very much a risk as a character. What is a good way to continue her character? We don't know. Because with how she's written and handled, we don't know.

for a show that is so representative, it's starting to fall apart.
bratty and annoying emma that mcevans canât handle at all. i know that girl is a bit annoying whenever someone acts sassy or condescending to her.
both older women love it too, so they purposely try and irritate emma.
(My first McNovans request, yippee! I hope you enjoy.) It was no secret that Emma Nolan was mostly an angel for her girlfriends.
She did what they asked, when they asked, but she really hated when they acted like she couldn't handle herself. Sure, she loved being looked after and protected, but she didn't need anyone to take care of her. "I'm not glass, y'know," Emma murmured under her breath as both Cassie and Dana examined a bruise on her wrist from a patient that had grabbed her just a little too hard while she was drawing their blood. "Oh, believe me, darlin', we know you aren't glass," Dana responded, pressing an ice pack to the young nurse's bruise. "We would've broken you by now if you were."
Cassie barely managed to stifle her laugh that earned her a death glare from Emma. A death glare that immediately had her going silent. Dana, however, was unwavering in her teasing. "But you take it so well for us, don't you?" Emma's fists clenched and unclenched, chest rising and falling with every deep breath she took in a failing attempt to calm herself. "Really? You're treating me like I'm fragile and you think now is a good time to make a dirty joke? Haha, very funny," she practically growled out through clenched teeth. "Can I go now? I don't need the whole ER thinking I get special treatment because you two can't help but go into overprotective mode the moment I get a scratch." Oh, now this was the side that Dana loved provoking. The feisty, usually hidden side of Emma Nolan.
"I thought you liked when we were protective over you," she leaned forward to whisper in Emma's ear, nipped at her earlobe before she pulled away. "You don't want everyone knowing you're a favourite little nurse, hm?" Dana spoke a little louder than necessary, loving the way Emma shrunk down for a moment like she was willing herself to evaporate into thin air, and then sat up straighter to very obviously show her defiant mood. "No, I don't want everyone knowing that, thanks so much for asking." Emma rolled her eyes and Cassie caught her chin with her thumb and index finger, forcing her to look up at them. "What was that, missy? Do you want to try that again?" The doctor's breath hitched as Emma did try again, and rolled her eyes with about ten times the attitude. "You're lucky that we aren't taking you to a supply closet, brat," Cassie's voice was couple of octaves lower than her normal tone now, eyes darkening with lust and something that looked a hell of a lot like promise. "Just wait until we get home," Dana muttered under her breath, practically shaking from the restraint that was coursing through her body and threatening to shatter underneath the tension. The normally controlled, tough-as-nails charge nurse turned on her heel and made her way out of the room they had tugged Emma into the moment they saw a blossoming bruise. If she didn't get back to work, and fast, there would be no waiting until they got home. Cassie, on the other hand, still had a firm grip on Emma's chin. "Well, you've gone and done it now, little lamb. Signed, sealed, and delivered your fate for tonight. Hope you're ready," she breathed out quietly before the tension was broken, all physical contact ceasing before she followed after her wife. Emma was left sitting on the hospital bed, alone. She dropped her head into her hands, mumbling softly into her palms, "Qu'est-ce que je viens de faire?" What did I just do?

how likely do you think Emma will be in season 3? I really hope so because I feel it could be a really interesting story exploring another way people cope with violence in healthcare. Plus we still have so much to learn about her!!!
And I based on both what weâve seen and interviews she is a sweet and kind character who is also strong. I want to see her subvert expectations at come out of this better. Like get her into therapy and spreading her wings. Plus more Emma and Dana bonding and supporting one another
LaĂŤtitia Hollard has made a point to emphasize in nearly every interview she has done that there is more to Emma than meets the eyeâshe is sweet and kind because she CHOOSES to be and there is so much strength behind that mindset. I certainly don't think this assault will take her fully out of commission, mostly because inflicting a serious injury on the innocent baby nurse that is 3 apples tall feels like it's leaning a bit too far into the 'medical drama' realm of TV, and The Pitt have consistently avoided that territory. If anything, she will need a short break and then point blank refuse to quit because, as also stated in interviews, Emma cannot allow herself to rest when people need help.
From a more logistical (as opposed to narrative) standpoint, we've seen with med students like Javadi that the show is not following the typical length of rotations, so even with this being Emma's first day shadowing, they still could bring her back for season 3. I think ultimately it comes down to money and scheduling, of course, but god do I truly hope so, Emma really has captured my heart.
more thoughts, especially about the dehumanisation of nurses in healthcare
also tw: for discussions of assault and SA
more thoughts with robby, santos, and langdon, spoilers ahead!
langdon is making the change. thatâs rare for addicts. some geniunely want to change because they realised theyâve hurt people they loved.
recovering addicts learn early on that not everyone will forgive them. itâs the way that langdon isnât taking that too heart thatâs affecting him as a doctor. his own personal feelings and agenda is making him perceive that he needs to actually be forgiven.
he wants robbyâs respect and santos to accept his apology. no, heâd hurt them. it makes sense the one who discovered it and the one who raised him to be a competent doctor donât forgive him. because he genuinely failed as one.
but itâs the fact he geniunely craves for approval that will affect his relationship with both robby and santos. santos already doesnât respect him despite knowing how competent he is, and robby cannot see him in the same way.
he unfortunately lacks self awareness. santos never properly processed it and robby chooses not to.
would i say he deserves better? yes. would i say that both robby and santos choose not to forgive him? yes.
in my opinion, langdon deserves to be in a different ED or a fellowship focusing on addiction because he has seen the pain it can truly cause.
spoilers ahead for 2x011!
â
iâm actually glad santos said that shit. sheâs literally saying what everyone thinks. langdon shouldâve been absolutely reported. he did a federal crime, harassed a worker (santos), and endangered patients all to get drugs.
itâs obvious santos said what she said. al hashimi overheard and will definitely change her tune. maybe to the point that she questions if langdon should be in this kind of emergency department where drugs like benzos should be.
langdon has more to say but santos has set her foot down. iâm with her, im sorry. i would only work professionally because how can you still trust him? heâs not the golden boy anymore but santos doesnât know that. she doesnt know that robby absolutely doesnât want him in the pitt anymore
â
and the ice story line. iâm a daughter of immigrants and many of my friends are too. i was genuinely worried for the storyline because there were rumours of hbo wanting the writers to be neutral. they handled it better and made themselves anti ice.
showed how ice is genuinely a terror in any place that requires care/community. the hospital even sets down boundaries that anyone should be cared for regardless of status.
no, i donât like how robby doesnât make an actual attempt to humanise pranita even when mckay wanted her to call her daughter and javadi seeing sheâs worried. yes, he made a good call to get them out, but still, heâs not humanising with pranita.
AND JESSE
HES A SWEET DUDE BUT JESUS
â
and i geniunely hope emma does stay in the pitt after that assault. i think sheâll have a breakdown because itâs implied that she had been assaulted before (her convo with dana in 2x09). sheâs a geniunely interesting character because she is actually implied to be a victim who never reported.
it makes sense with her people pleasing personality. she really tries so hard to be happy but her being so obviously open will hurt her and she did get it.
i feel like itâs a reoccurring theme that a nurse/doctor will be assaulted by patients or anyone to represent how so many people dehumanise them.
â
also another thing, the chekhovâs gun. hula hoop is the gun. thatâs all iâm going to say.
random headcanons for our token midwesterns
this is just for emma and whitaker. im valid because i am also midwestern
--
Dennis Whitaker
has tendencies to randomly say 'ope' whenever anyone bumps into him or accidentally bumps into a wall/counter
favorite culver's menu is the culver's deluxe
his preferred side is wisconsin cheese curds
is part of the majority that says 'pop'. santos and javadi gets his ass for it
mourns runza everyday
whenever winter hits in pittsburgh, santos makes him drive as he is genuinely so good at driving through the snow
Emma Nolan
mourns caribou coffee. didn't have them growing up but attending nursing school and needing caffeine got her hooked on it
was soooo torn up when there was no caribou in pennsylvania
is one of those midwesterns where she is kind of incompetent with driving in the snow (she opts to take public transit instead)
in high school, went to the culver's in her hometown to get either the malts or shakes with friends
struggles to choose between the butterburger and the spicy chicken sandwich, so she alternates every time she visits
can somehow endure the winter with less layers
Collective
both tries to convince the others to come back to illinois (the closest state from pa with culverâs) with them to try culver's whenever they are given a long break
they have an accent that gradually goes away the longer they stay in pittsburgh
for thanksgiving, they worked together to make a casserole. unfortunately wasn't received that well as dana and cassie were the only ones to like it
"well, i should probably get going!" only leaves an hour later after that goodbye
they can understand each other's "no yeah" "yeah no" "no yeah no", and they'd often translate whenever anyone gets confused
