Headcanons:
Hans was born as the youngest of thirteen children, all boys, to a powerful politician on a group of small islands to the south of Echo Isle, the Southern Isles. Being the youngest was the worst fate that could possibly bestowed upon someone so ambitious. Trying to make a name for himself in politics on the Southern Isles was nearly impossible when no one took him seriously, and his eldest brother was up to take over his father’s seat upon his retirement.
To be clear, getting into politics isn’t about making a difference, not for Hans, at least. He doesn’t really give a shit about what anyone does--he just knows he could make a ton of money off of it, and that being in power is his favorite place to be. Having power means everything to someone who has never had any of it in his own family. It’s about time that people saw he was worth paying attention to.
Yes, there really were two years when his brothers decided to ignore him. It was then that he decided that he would fuck them over eventually. In the wise words of one singer, there is literally nothing Hans does better than revenge.
Though he hates being a Westergaard in the sense that he would literally choose any other family than his own to be a part of, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t flex his last name. Being a Westergaard on the Southern Isles has opened a lot of doors for Hans, so at least his family has been good for something.
A total frat boy in college. Hans went to school to study political science and join a fraternity. He considers his frat brothers more of siblings than his actual other twelve. His side conquest was finding a rich enough girl (or guy) to put a ring on so he could just marry into a political family and put him at a beeline to the top, but he wasn’t so successful. He probably could’ve been nicer to the very few people he spent more than one or two nights with, but that’s in the past now.
Though he has objectives, Hans isn’t dumb. He knew that there was no way he could get what he wanted if he stayed on the Southern Isles, so he decided to start looking elsewhere, which was when he found Echo Isle. There had been rumors on the Southern Isles that their trading partner was looking to close their borders, and Hans decided this was his chance. With nowhere for anyone to go, and turmoil on the horizon, he could swoop in and save the day.
It was almost a miracle, crossing paths with Colin Hopper. Hans knows he can schmooze his way to the top of a powerful company easier than actually getting elected into a seat on any council, so he decided to take the offer to work for him. That doesn’t mean he’s forgotten his end goal, but he knows that he can use being involved with Hopper to his benefit when the time comes. Hopper also has aspirations for political involvement, so Hans is hoping that he’ll back him when he eventually does run after finding the right person to marry.
Though he intends to get married, that doesn’t mean he plans on stopping his habit of sleeping with other people. Whoever he gets engaged to doesn’t have to know. Hans is extremely full of himself, and knows that it would be a disservice to humanity for him to be reserved for just one person. There are so many beautiful people out there that he deserves to get to know.
There’s a pair of sisters who have caught his eye, and though the older one would be a faster path to the part, the younger one is just so desperate. Hans is pretty lazy, and though each option has its challenges, wooing the redhead seems like the easier route. If there’s one thing Hans knows how to do better than anything, it’s putting on his best smile and telling a girl anything she wants to hear.
