Iām sorry but I canāt get over the genius symbolism of this piece
So, the piece is called āDovetail Mate.ā This is what it basically looks like on the board
Based on the coloration and prior symbolism within Nevermore, Lenore represents the black King, while Annabel represent the white Queen. The reason this layout spells out whiteās victory is that, because it is surrounded by other pieces (the rook and the bishop), the black King cannot escape the Queen, and, even if the King takes out the Queen, it will be killed by the white Rook.
You can see the black Rook and Bishop as representing Lenoreās friends (most likely Pluto and Duke due to thematic parallels between Annabelās team), and that the tragedy of them surrounding Lenore, not letting her escape the Queen, is that, by becoming her friends, Lenore has found herself trapped by wanting to keep her new friends close and safe, while also wanting to go along with Annabelās plan of escaping together. Though their presence works in the whole of the Misfitsā favor most of the time, in this specific, unfortunate circumstance, their presence in the scenario complicates Lenoreās situation, essentially forcing her to pit herself against Annabel, while also wanting to bring Annabel with her. This is why Lenore is represented as the King: she is the key piece in both the Misfitsā and Annabelās game, and if sheās gone the gambit is up and both sides are left defeated. She can move one space in any direction ā representing her bold personality and determination ā but cannot move more than one space at a time, representing how her part in this constructed game limits how much she can do.
On the other side of the board, Annabelās role as the Queen works perfectly: She is the brains behind her constructed team, her decisions and actions ultimately causing the most disruption on the board due to her clever strategizing and guidance of the other pieces. However, by pitting herself on the other side of the board as Lenore ā her true āKingā ā she has essentially pushed herself into a very precarious situation, where she must keep up the facade of being opposed to her, while also trying to keep her safe. However, in this case, where the board has reached the Dovetail Mate, Annabel has trapped Lenore in the game, positioning herself as the main threat to her safety, which perfectly mirrors the fallout of her scheme: by misjudging Lenoreās devotion to her new friends, Annabel has cornered Lenore, which has led to both of them being threatened by the otherās team. As Annabel has said, Lenore is āthe only one who can kill her,ā and this is shown clearly in the Dovetail Mateās configuration, where the only piece that can kill the white Queen is the black King. However, the reason this is considered checkmate is because of the presence of the white Rook ā Montressor. Annabel herself has made that exact comparison in the comic, and, as represented here, if Annabel is eliminated, that leaves Lenore vulnerable to Montressor, who has clearly had it out for her since day one.
Essentially: Because of the complex game Annabel has constructed, Lenore and Annabel must ultimately be the death of eachother ā which seems to have already happened in their tragic demise in life. However, I doubt itās too late for Annabel and Lenore to find a way to escape this checkmate and find a way to get everyone to safety. After all, checkmate may be the end of a game from a strategic standpoint, but the white Queen could alwaysā¦ turn the other way, and let the King go free.
