being a monkees fan sucks because I saw someone make multiple posts saying they genuinely hated micky and I
I just had to take a deep breath, hit the block button, and think happy thoughts because I was this close to using some very harsh words because what do you mean you hate micky
no one talks about my son that way
no one
I will be very honest that I have read explicit fanfics of the members , but I cannot bring myself to write any. I feel so strange knowing that these are real people, I don’t know how yall do it but I guess with the post I’m opening up the conversation of writing fiction about irl people and where the line is drawn.
Also this post is in no way hating on anyone who write explicit content of irls I just more want to understand it and what is seen as okay and not okay.
I don't mind RPF in general, but The Monkees specifically is one that is easy for me to feel pretty blase about for a few reasons. The first is that the show muddies the RPF line soooo much, because they did draw from the irl personalities of the band. Davy even summarizes Micky in his autobio by saying 'did you see him in the show? Yeah that's just him irl, too'. Which is kind of a joke of course; Davy exaggerated a lot. But with the show using their names and some base personality traits it does end up being kind of 'struggling band AU RPF' to me. And there's even already shipping, even if not between the band mates.
The second is that all of The Monkees knew about explicit ship fics and didn't REALLY care. (Micky found out from his daughter ending up on an explicit fic/art site. He was reportedly upset about discussion forums which insulted him/his wife for legal defamatory purposes, but not about the fics. Davy blew off the shipping by saying he could do better than the other guys. Mike reportedly invited a fan/friend to talk about the smut fics with him. Peter MAYBE? didn't like it but I've heard less specific info about his opinions. There was a post kind of recently that claimed he didn't like it though and I might as well believe that as much as any other of the opinions I've heard lol) In any case their opinions aren't nearly as negative as I think people tend to assume.
Personally I'm fine with RPF in a blanket sort of way, not just for The Monkees in particular. But it is also a lot easier for me to not care about Monkees fic when I feel the show is itself RPF-lite and when I know that the band reportedly didn't care much.
There are topics that still make me uncomfortable for writing when it's more specifically RPF than with the detachment of being through 'the showverse'. And if I met Micky and he was like 'man that fic you wrote about me and Mike is real weird' even though I think the topics in my fics aren't particularly controversial outside of it being RPF in terms of content, I'd probably lose the enjoyment for writing it lol. But tbh I'd also likely be put off writing fic for something like Interview with the Vampire because Anne Rice made a big enough stink about fanfic (even her more recent acceptance is patronizing enough I wouldn't want to write it). In general I think RPF including explicit is acceptable even in the cases that it's something I'd feel uncomfortable writing myself, and the major faux pas is just discussing it with the people who the fic's about.
I have seen recently some posts about how RPF should be locked for users only on Ao3. Some of this was because of news outlets specifically hunting down RPF. But some of it was out of respect/ to help prevent the person it's about from stumbling on it. This was for HR so I think it's more likely that the actors will be tagged, but I disagree either way. Ao3 is an author's space. In the case of Micky and his daughter stumbling on fanfic, that site was also a creator's space-- you can't see it now from the wayback machine but the landing page did make it VERY obvious that it was adult content. I think he had a reason to peep the site for the legal aspect-- especially since this was a LONG time ago in terms of internet and fanfic/fanart was even less mainstream than now. But I'm also glad that he left the fic well enough alone because the fic itself was absolutely in an author's space, not 'his' space.
Almost five months and many headaches later... it's finished!

Hello fanfiction community,
Just wanted to bring to your attention that the term whump was actually coined by the Stargate fandom specifically to describe making this guy suffer. He is the original Mr. Whump (no that's not his actual name). That's how torturable this guy is.
Everyone say mean things about him.
Here is a non exhaustive list of what he goes through in canon btw:
His parents get crushed to death right in front of him when he is a kid
He is forced to relive the memory of his parents death countless times
He dies and gets resurrected
His wife gets possessed
He fails to save her and she dies in his arms
He dies and gets resurrected again
He gets infected by a virus that makes him act crazy and gets put in an insane asylum
He dies and gets resurrected again
His ex gets possessed
He is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation
He dies and ascends to a higher plane, then gets kicked out of the higher plane and his memory is wiped
He gets kidnapped by a princess
He gets kidnapped by a fish alien
He gets kidnapped and tortured by some terrorists
He gets kidnapped and tortured by another alien
He is driven to insanity by an alien device
He dies and gets resurrected again
He dies and gets resurrected again
hey is anyone else sick of having to adapt to horrible conditions over and over again
the humble woolly mammoth
ashy slashy!

Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz pretend to be old ladies for a 1967 radio advert. (Just listen to it. Seriously.)
Oh my goodness, Ethel!
alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!

46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive

Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)

it's so sad to me that the laugh track on the American M*A*S*H episodes made everyone actually think that Hawkeye was just kidding every time he made bisexual comments. You all missed out on a proper queer bisexual disaster hero.
mash being surprisingly queer in the 70′s - 23/?

i’d never seen the follow up this is 1000x funnier
Here’s some sketches exploring one of my ideas for the creature from “The Terror” by Dan Simmons, and how I imagined it could work as a supernatural element while still able to be mistaken for a polar bear at a glance or in the distance.
