I've noticed that Haumea isn't really spherical, but instead is more potato shaped. Is it considered massive enough to maintain hydrostatic equilibrium?
This ask came during the Great Pluto Shitfest of A Few Weeks Ago so I let the inbox cool off for a bit before getting to it.
Anyway, the answer is yes. Haumea is the fastest-spinning large object in the Solar System (that we know of), rotating on its axis once every four hours. This rapid spin has kept it from reaching a spherical shape.
Regarding hydrostatic equilibrium — which is when the pull of gravity is balanced by a pressure-gradient — Haumea’s mass is considered sufficient to keep it in this state. However, the more dense an object in hydrostatic equilibrium, the more spherical it must be. This puts some constraints on Haumea’s size and shape that will likely be ascertained with better observational tools.
