An odd little town, lost in the middle of a big state, far off on another coast. I can’t wait to get back there.

As much as I don’t like this building and what it represents, it does make for some dramatic lighting.

Any art piece that involves both neon lights an infinite mirrors is a win in my book.

I’ve always loved shooting down by the waterfront during a snowstorm. The wooden pillars standing on their own with the snow on them makes for a stark contrasts between light and dark. And I like how when the snow is falling heavily enough it just makes everything disappear within it. You wouldn’t know you’re looking at the Manhattan skyline in this shot.

I think the photos from this evening are in the front of the line for when I decide to go back and edit some of my favorite shots. I’ve learned a lot over the subsequent years since that night. I think I’m still trying to narrow down in on a ‘look’ but I think I’m pretty close and I think I can do better with this photo and the others to bring them closer to that point.

There’s that, and then the emotions and the characters that evening made for some fantastic photography. 2013 was a good year.

Everyone seems to agree that winter is pretty much over and we’re not going to get another good snowstorm. While I wouldn’t mind jumping into shorts, now that I live in Brooklyn I would like one more chance to get the neighborhood in snow. We shall see what comes of it.

I’ve always liked that this building has no right angles looking up at it. I appreciate that as a point of architecture. There are so many boring glass monoliths being built these days that have no defining features to them other than the name on the building.

Some days you just need a drink so you run over to your favorite little speakeasy hidden behind the local coffee shop.

The Glass Room was a well put together gallery popup last year that addressed technology has become so pervasive in our lives and the inherent dangers of this. A lot of it was focused on encryption and meta data. Most all services and technology collect some sort of meta data which is supposed to be anonymous but as the exhibit showed, peoples personal details are fairly easy to acquire from this data with relatively little effort.

Maybe I’ll make use of the Data Detox kit they were handing out to help make my life a bit more secure/simple.

Where’s your local?

There are so many good bars and lounges in New York City, I hardly know where to begin. All depends on what you’re in the mood for.

Holiday shopping has begun.

There’s so much to see upstate and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it in the future. Storm King Art Center made for a fantastic day trip. Next on the top of my list to go to is Mohonk Mountain House. My parents brought me there when I was young and I fell in love with the place.

I’m so happy I was able to catch the autumn foliage in my home town this year. I grew up in the suburbs of New York City on Long Island, so even though I’m living in Manhattan now, I still head back home frequently.

Onwards.

Traveling by train is so underappreciated in the US these days. There are so many places and small towns that pass by my window as the train rattles on that I want to go back and visit sometime. Perhaps I’ll make that a photo series, taking a long distance trip by train, getting off at every stop and spending a day or two in each town or village or wherever I wind up.
