1- A transfem POC plays Ricky (Alley Carmine Rose Correa)!
Trans POC, in general just play awesome Rickies (as someone who saw two different trans POC play Ricky live, one Mexican-American and transmasc nonbinary, and the other one a black trans man), especially Yannick Mirko. Karnak refers to her as "The Most Imaginative Girl in Town" (although she still calls herself a "Space Age Bachelor Man", in the song) and post-SABM, she switches from the male uniform to the female uniform.
We hardly see transfem actresses in Ride the Cyclone, but Alley just SHINES as Ricky!
2- While this production does use the new script, it adds extra details to Ricky's portrayal to add some extra nuance to her.
For one, in addition to playing the tambourine during "Uranium Suite", she also signs throughout the whole number. Secondly, Ricky's backstory specifies that she is CODA, with her preacher father being deaf, hence the sign language once she goes mute. Third, much like the classic script, she concedes post-SABM, and even says the infamous "Don't be a dick" line!
Honestly, more Ricky portrayals should use signing, in general, old or new script!
I don’t have much to say about this, because op did an amazing job at highlighting Alley’s truly intergalactic performance, but I will say as I talked to her after the show she actually mentioned that she was born to deaf parents, which is why she felt the inclusion of Ricky’s disability was so important :)

What if William Barfée got into a tragic accident where he lost one of his legs, but the doctors kept saying it was remarkable because he actually should’ve lost both of them, and William’s mom (Joan, of course) tells him that his other foot is magic to help him feel better
Or even the reverse, that his new prosthetic leg is a gift and is magic, and that so long as he keeps it with him and believes in it he’ll always be okay no matter what life throws at him
Theater people of tumblr, have you ever played a character on stage, only to get so attached to that character that you give them a name and backstory despite them having none canonically?
Have you ever had so many hc’s for a character you portrayed that you wrote fanfiction for them? Because that would be so silly, right, having 14K+ words for a character that only existed in one short-lived version of a commonly retold story?
That is part of the beauty of live theater. So many people are going to tell this story, but it will never be the same as when you told it. No one will know your character the way you do, and you will never have that same level of understanding for different iterations of the same character simply because the conditions in which this version of the character developed only existed in this one production.
When you have had your time in the sun and the house lights come up on the final show night, no one will ever again observe this whole person you created based on a collection of words on a page.
Everyone will have a different interpretation of those words, and the marvelous thing about live theater is that they are all correct. They are all true. They all existed simultaneously in dozens of minds scattered across the world.
And, for a little while, you got to have a piece of that.

VARIOUS THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN WILMINGTON DRAMA LEAGUE’S RIDE THE CYCLONE:
(out of order and i’ll probs add more later since i’m just writing things in the order i remember them)
Jane Doe had a green ribbon around her neck, in reference to that short story about the girl whose head falls off after her lover removes the green ribbon from her neck. My jaw literally dropped when I saw this I was so happy to see it!
I already said this before, but they gave Ricky back his mobility aids during Uranium Suite and his bumper!
VERY IMPORTANT: When Noel and Misha were drinking and Noel said they’ve never kissed a man before, Misha leaned over and gave them a little kiss on the head, after which Noel said “thank you” IT WAS ADORABLE
Each character got an outfit change for their song! Obviously there was the NL, SABM, and Talia fits, but Ocean had this incredible sparkly leotard and giant sparkly officer hat that came completely out of the blue. Misha had a chain and pimp jacket during TSIA. And Constance had this stunning sparkly gold leotard and white shawl.
After Jane and Ricky’s talk following TNBD Song, you could see Ricky infodumping to Jane about zolar. Then after Noel and Misha’s scene, Misha gives his vodka to Ricky (who takes it) and Jane (who refuses) and then he tries to give some to Karnak.
When Jane pulled the lever to show her photos, that little logo with the gray person that appears when you don’t have a profile picture popped up instead.
Also can I just gush about the ORCHESTRATION of this show god the timbres the instruments sounded absolutely amazing I could feel them in my bones
And the vocal harmonies were SUBLIME
During Misha’s bumper, his adopted parents stood up on this raised area on the stage to make it seem like the were looking down on him in the basement, and during this part Misha was making very nonchalant and halfhearted middle fingers at them
CONSTANCE’S FUCKING ACTRESS WAS SO INCREDIBLE HER JAWBREAKER MONOLOGUE WAS SO SUBTLE AND PERFECT. plus before her recorder solo she said “here we go!!” and it was so cute
Instead of Noel’s taco bell picture just popping up on screen, it slowly and ominously faded in while they were talking
Also Noel jumped up in front of the screen to try and hide it it was very funny
During It’s Not a Game/It’s Just a Ride, they did choreo that called back to the choreo of each of the kid’s songs (cat hands for SABM, guitar for Sugar Cloud etc.)
Also during Sugar Cloud all the kids had instruments and were playing for her it was so cute this show is so fucking-
Ricky’s SABM outfit was great it looked like something a scenemo therian kid would sew for halloween
RICKY’S ACTOR HAD ME CRACKING UP he would do these subtle, almost cartoonish or cosplayer-esque facial expressions and body movements and it was great
He also did some great breakdancing before he said his catchphrase
All of the actors were so good at delivering their lines in a subtle and genuine way, rather than a cheesy and corny way, which I think is often an issue in rtc productions. The acting never once made me want to roll my eyes
Misha’s actor was especially good at this his deliveries were kinda deadpan and had me cracking up
Same with Noel and Jane and ALL OF THEM THEY WERE ALL GREAT
The guys had coneheads instead of cat ears during SABM
While Ricky was pretending to play Harry Potter during Noel’s bumper he said “AVADACADABRA” super fast and it was so funny
Instead of Misha and Noel kissing aggressively during Noel’s Lament, they had a short, soft kiss and I appreciated it it was cuteness
The projection footage during Talia didn’t just show Talia, but it also showed Misha with her and their whole simulated wedding
They had this kind of float platform on wheels thing that would come out for some choreo, for example Misha and Jane (as Talia) came out on it during Talia. After SABM the kids all floated backstage on it while Jane’s bumper music started and it was so auraful
Misha was on his knees at the front of the stage at the end of Talia, and after his last note he slumped forward onto the floor #mybaby
After Talia, Noel hugged Misha first, and then everyone besides Ocean joined in for a group hug :)

I finally watched this production (as the boot is out on Youtube) and I must say even this is an UNDERSTATEMENT to how AMAZING the show was!
I admit I have my criticisms, as anyone might, but overall the actors were adorable, and really made an effort into giving their characters little quirks and things to do when it wasn’t their turn, which, in my opinion is often a big part in what can make the show good and enjoyable. Not to mention the physical acting, staging, and just all the little bits and pieces… to me, there was so much heart in this production and I am SO happy it got recorded… I would absolutely recommend this, I love you OP…

If you watch ride the cyclone and just see Noel as the gay one then you are wrong for two reasons
1) there is no singular gay one they are all gay
2) there are so many more interesting parts to him than just his identity he is a writer and a poet he’s witty, funny and kind I wish we knew more about his and the others lives but I know that knowing would defeat the point of the musical which was them expressing themselves for who they wanted to be not who they were
