Congratulations If...
You got out of bed today.
You did your dishes or dirty laundry.
You finished some homework youâve been putting off.
You cleaned up around your home/apartment/dorm etc.
You resisted temptation in any form.
You found a reason to smile.
Little victories are worth celebrating!!
Not sure if wearing jeans with holes in them is the most appropriate wear for teaching but here we are. #gradschool #islamicstudies #ootd
For my journals for grad school this week Iď¸ have to read about how Islam came to the Caucasus which is so cool since Iď¸ hiked through the Northern Caucasus this summer and had the most wonderful tour guides and host homes! #islam #islamicstudies
little joys for today:
made an 111 on my Arabic test, had a fantastic cup of coffee from Starbucks, and worked on my thesis chapter some more.
thesis advice?
Any advice for someone who has a chapter of their thesis presentation due in three weeks and has been slacking?

Eid Mubarak! Eid al-Adha celebrates the religious devotion of Abraham and his obedience to Godâs command. It marks the end of the hajj, the pilgrimage made by Muslims to Mecca, Islamâs holiest city in Saudi Arabia. Mecca is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammed and where God revealed the holy book of the Qurâan to him. The celebration of Eid al-Adha starts with prayers, readings from the Qurâan, and thanking God for all of his blessings. It ends with a feast where an animal is sacrificed and shared among family, friends, and the needy.

How do you say âI love fallâ in your native and target language?
english: âI love fallâ
german: âIch liebe den Herbstâ
Arabic: ŘŁŘب اŮŘŽŘąŮŮ
Today in teaching:
I showed orientalism in Aladdin, Tomi Lahren and talked a bit about Islamophobia so that was fun. :)
Hi I'm thinking of starting either Mandarin or Arabic, and I realize you haven't listed Mandarin as a language you speak, but do you have any tips, comments, etc about Arabic? From the learning process to anything about the language itself? Thanks!!
Hi! Arabic is a fascinating and rich language and definitely worth learning. It is the fifth most widely spoken language in the world and the demand for Arabic speakers is high in many careers. Knowing Arabic also gives you a better understanding of the Arab world and culture and Islam. Itâs recommended that you start with Modern Standard Arabic as it is the common language of literature, media, and politics (and communication between Arabs that donât speak the same dialect), and then pick one of the dialects. The Arabic script is gorgeous, includes only 28 letters, and is relatively easy to learn. There are couple of sounds that are a bit difficult for non-native speakers to distinguish and pronounce, but apart from that the pronunciation is quite straightforward. Arabic grammar is said to be challenging as Arabic is a fusional language, which means - simply put - that its nouns and adjectives are declined and verbs are conjugated. There are lots of resources for learning Arabic and itâs not hard to find native speakers to practice with either. I hope you pick Arabic, but even if you donât, I wish you good luck with your studies!
An addition regarding the learning process: if you donât know a Semitic language yet be prepared to deal with frustration occasionally as there initially is no way for you to guess the meaning of a word based on previous knowledge you have of related languages. You will not be able to recognize verbs and nouns either as you might be able to in a language related to the ones you already speak. However! When you experience this frustration remember that this is normal and please know that Arabic is a very algebraic language due to its root system. That means every word is based on a (usually) three letter root that indicates the meaning or the word field a word is related to. By adding more letters according to certain patterns that you will encounter and learn on your language learning journey you can build a verb related to a noun you know and guess the meanings of words you have never seen before. An easy example for how this works is the root k-t-b that describes everything related to âwritingâ. From these three letters you can make kitaab (book), kaatib (writer), kataba/yaktub (to write), kitaabah (writing), maktab (office), maktabah (library) and many more. Sometimes the relation between the root and a word based on it is less obvious but to me, thatâs the most fun part! Generally speaking, this system is something you will get used to once you learn more Arabic and you will learn how to use it to your advantage. I have been studying Arabic for a year now and just returned from a three week language class in Morocco where I was forced to speak Arabic every day. While I am nowhere near advanced or even proficient yet Iâd still describe myself as conversational since I understand a lot when people are speaking MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) with me (my class in Morocco was held completely in Arabic; new words were explained in Arabic, grammar was explained in Arabic, discussions were had in Arabic) and thanks to my class I can sort of reply and get my point across most of the time, too even if a native speaker would say things differently. Of course you need to be prepared to work hard and put a lot of effort in but that applies to every language. Is Arabic worth the effort? Yes. Like Essi said, it will open up a lot of countries and new cultures to you; I had many amazing short conversations with taxi drivers in Morocco who were all delighted I was interested in their language (I even met one who had lived in Germany at some point and spoke German). I met a lovely woman in the restaurant I always had lunch at and ended up becoming friends with her and getting invited to visit her and her daughter in Marrakech where the daughter studies sound engineering - all because I could have conversations with her in Arabic. It is definitely worth the effort and the frustration because there are so many moments like this that make it worth it. You will also get to read amazing poems and books in their original language that makes them come alive more than a translation ever could. If you learn Arabic you donât just get a language, you get centuries worth of history and literature and culture. Should you have any more questions about learning Arabic feel free to message me and Iâll try to answer them to the best of my abilities! I hope you end up choosing the language thatâs the best fit for you personally and enjoy learning it as much as I am enjoying learning Arabic. :)
i am on my 6th year of taking Arabic classes, had one every semester in college except one, and throughout my masterâs program, Qurâan Arabic classes. I love it. Itâs one of my passions. I also love the people you get to meet using the language and how much it means to them that you even say hello or goodbye in their language. Goodbye, is not just goodbye. In Arabic, it translates as âgoodbye with safety/peaceâ and that is just beautiful.

Tired Tales of a TA:
I am tired. I really don't want to teach today. I honestly am glad God helped me wake up at 7:15 for teaching my 9 am because I am usually up much earlier and probably would have slept in which would not be good. This stormy weather just makes me want to stay home.Â
You know youâre tired when you take a sip of coffee and say, âit doesnât taste the bestâ but Iâll drink it. I donât want to lesson plan. I am so ready for this three day weekend. In reality, I think teaching tomorrow will be fun since its on Islam, but I am just not focused today.
Nope. Nope. Canât drink it. I got paid today and Iâm heading to pick up some starbucks coffee. lol
