TEAM CARYL 4LIFE â¤
Color me intrigued and sceptical.
Saying a hug rivals our No Sanctuary hug is a tall order. I'm definitely struggling to imagine a hug that can live up to that statement.
ADDITION:
I wanted to come back and expand on this a little further. These are just my opinions, based on my shipper goggle view.
This is long, and I can't seem to "read below the cut" on my phone, so my apologies. Also, I know this has all been said before, but just skip this post if you don't wanna hear it again.
For me, the reasons the No Sanctuary hug is going to be hard to beat is multifaceted.
- Beautifully Shot Scene
The lighting, (holy shit, we can see what's happening!) making sure to show both of their reactions throughout the entire scene, (their faces, their hands, their body language) the way it seems at times as though they are the only ones there, the music, etc. All of this is so well done.
- The Angst
The lead up to this scene is unparalleled, in my opinion, to any other emotional scene to take place on this show. For me, the love between these 2 is not matched by any other paring (platonic or romantic) in TWD universe. They are in a league of their own. The build-up was tense.
Daryl asking for Carol immediately upon his return, and some would say his intense contemplation over the jade stone.
Carol being dismissed by Rick, and Daryl's anger at that situation.
Carol, after spending the night alone, having gone back to the prison when she saw the fire only to be too late.
Carol and Daryl following the same path, only to go opposite directions when coming to the train tracks and then ending up within probably a couple miles of each other.
Carol seeing Daryl's smoke from a distance and remarking on it more than once.
Daryl's depression which I believe was not just about losing the prison family in general, because the 2 of them crossing each others paths at different times meant to me that his sadness was centered on Carol. We were supposed to feel this sadness that they kept missing each other. When reuniting with Rick and Co., he still was not back to his normal self. An integral part was still missing for him.
Carol finding Daryl's crossbow, and knowing he was there in Terminus somewhere.
Daryl being literally on the verge of death, a second from dying before Carol blew shit up.
Carol going through hell, alone, to save them all, but ultimately believing that she failed. Imagine the devastation she had to have felt as she walked away from Terminus.
Feeling as though there was NO CHANCE they would ever see each other again.
Over a half a season of separation. -_-
Undoubtedly, there is more I am missing here. It was intense.
- The Emotions
The feelings running through the 2 of them at this time were strong.
For Carol, she just put her life on the line for a group of people that she believed no longer wanted her as a part of their "family" and she believed she failed in her mission to save them. She was insulted and abandoned in an unbelievably cruel fashion, and you can see her fear and hesitancy as she tentatively approaches the group. Her eyes dart from Rick, to Daryl. That is her biggest fear in this moment. She may feel fear that her other friends no longer want her, but it's Rick and Daryl that are her main concern.
Rick, because she was told he no longer wanted her around under ANY circumstances, and Daryl because she feared he now hated her. But in that moment, you can see that it is Daryl she finally fixates on. It is Daryl her eyes rest on. If he truly wants nothing to do with her, that will be the nail in the coffin. His reaction means everything to her in that moment and she is waiting on pins and needles to know how he now feels about her. And he doesn't fail to deliver that information. In fact, his reaction is completely surprising to her. She is expecting the worst.
For Daryl, his relief had to be at an all time high after escaping, and yet he seemed very stoic. To me he appeared pretty resigned to his death immediately before the explosion. The Daryl we had previously known would have fought to the death. He was hardly resisting. The reasoning for that is obviously up for speculation, but the shipper part of me believes it's because he had lost a huge part of his will to live in losing Carol.
Even though Rick is the one who banished her, the focus for the audience is clearly on how Daryl is going to react. What feelings Daryl is going to emote towards her return. They purposefully have Daryl say NOTHING about her for many many episodes. We are given no indication outright on his thoughts. It is all "read between the lines" and parallels and clues up until this moment, and yet it is his reaction and his feelings that are highlighted here. And again, he does not fail to deliver.
The emotion that explodes from him is the answer to her question, x100. He is not only NOT upset with her reappearance, he is on cloud nine. He shows an emotional reaction that we have never seen before from him, and have not seen since. Complete and utter joy and relief. Daryl MF Dixon sprinted to her in front of about a dozen or more people, many of whom were strangers, and collided into her with acceptance and unbridled love. This powerhouse and man of strength shed tears of happiness, and clutched onto her for dear life. That emotion was only to be matched by Carol's total relief that this man she loved so dearly was now holding her in his arms, and showing everyone present that his favorite person in the world was safe and back in his life. Tears are flowing from her eyes as she gets exactly what she needs in that moment. The love of Daryl.
- The Chemistry
Norman and Melissa play this part to perfection. You can feel the love ten fold. Now don't get me wrong. That chemistry is always present, but this scene explodes with it, and is a testimony to their real life friendship, their acting abilities, and the relationship they know their characters to have. It is absolutely beautiful to watch, and it never gets old for me. I'm sure that not filming together for such a long time played a part, but we have also seen that chemistry at play in basically all interactions between these two.
They had to have known what love this scene would receive by many of the fans. It stands out as one of the best in the series. Carol reuniting with the group and especially with Daryl was anticipated, and it was so much more than many of us ever dreamed or hoped for.
- The Little Details
The running into her arms, the tears, the sighs, the giggle from Carol, the "lift" and the intensity of the hug. Carol running her hands over Daryl and his nuzzle. The looks of pure love and relief. His anticipation of Rick's reaction. All of these little details were just lovely to watch and feel. Just when you thought that this episode couldn't get more intense and explosive, it does. It explodes with love.
In my opinion, all of these things need to be topped in order for any hug to be genuinely compared to the No Sanctuary hug. That is quite a big set of shoes to fill. For me, there is probably only one way this hug can truly be beat, and that is for an indication of romantic cannon to take place. The reason for that is because with all of these details combined, when it comes right down to it, this hug was a complete declaration of the love between these two amazing characters, and showed that no matter what decisions they may make that could be questionable morally, they will "never hate each other" and will always be there to welcome each other with open arms. To me, the only way to top that is to declare that not only is the love there, but it is a love that goes beyond friendship, beyond "family" and beyond joy at being reunited, but it is a love that moves into the territory of romantic love. That they are unquestionably IN LOVE. That they feel for one another something they truly feel for no one else.
But hell, I'm looking forward to it anyway. :)

Wow. Found this in my old drafts and decided to fix it up a tad.
I miss them for real
im sorry
Dear Black Jesus,
Please lay your strong hands on these two middle-aged caucasians and give them the strength and wisdom to overcome the asshatery which is Gimpleâs vision. For only in your loving arms will Caryl find peace in their hearts and fire in their loins.
Last Day On Earth - The Sequel
*warning for fluff, feelings, positivity and hope*Â
The concept of âseizing the momentâ in the ZA should be obvious and especially so when it comes to human relationships. In a world where one can die at anytime, itâs imperative to let the people you love know that they matter to you. You can lose them and they can lose you, which theoretically speaking should be enough to motivate a person to embrace happiness and love ASAP. Daryl has now âlostâ Carol several times and thereby should have at this point recognized how fleeting everything really is. Technically both of them should be clutching on to love after everything theyâve had to face and subsequently lose . Right? Whatâs the hold up?Â
Itâs easy to entertain the 'if they donât get it by now they never willâ argument, because itâs very true that theyâve had several emotional interludes where romance seemed like the logical conclusion of a given arc but ultimately failed to materialize itself all the way. Call it teasing, call it ambiguityâŚcall it blatant trolling. It doesnât really matter. The only thing that does matter is the fact that the spark exists and that the show knows itâs there. And you know what they say about sparks - given the right conditions and the right fuel, they can become an inferno and burn forever.Â
Maybe things never lined up for Carol and Daryl the way things had just started to line up for the others. Given their past and experience with what others told them LOVE was, i think itâs understandable why their requirements to really FEEL and contemplate SETTLING DOWN, would be different and maybe even more extensive than they are for the others who donât have the same hang ups they do. Fear. Rejection. Self-Worth. Grief. Ridicule. Hurt. LossâŚ. Those are all things everyone feels but Carol and Daryl have felt like that pretty much their whole life. Itâs simple - they need more time to love because they have more time filled with pain to overcome. Will Season 7 be finally be their time? I hope so. I also have reasons as to why it could be now and why it wasnât back then.
Carol and Daryl didnt get together in past seasons because the writers simply didnât want them to get together then. They had other stories about them that they wanted to tell first and romance wasnât one of them. Despite the fact that the uncertainty of ZA should spur people to not waste emotional times, that concept only becomes a factor if itâs actually embedded in the story. Every aspect canât be explored with every character and every arc, meaning that the expectation of Daryl professing his love for Carol after she returned not being there doesnât mean that he never will. It just means that the writers wanted to explore something else first.
TWD âLast Day On Earthâ 616 The title of the episode and the fact that it ends in a cliffhanger, echoes the theme of losing loved ones and the importance of them knowing everything you want them to know before that final goodbye. The writers are telling us exactly what the point of this story is and what the characters themselves are contemplating or will contemplate going forward.

CARYL: Its Not Us Its Them
If there is a positive thing to take from TPTB and their dismissive and thoughtless attitude towards their fans regarding both the finale and the drop in quality writing this season, it would be that we now have even more evidence that indicates that they REALLY are very-much opposed to fan-service and the popular opinion trap. It means that this is completely their story and they donât necessarily care about what we want to see, what we need to see and how we feel about the show itself. While I personally donât like seeing things that are blatantly there as fan service, I do think that ignoring the audience response and chalking it up to a minor upset can be a big mistake for any show. Disrespecting fans and dismissing their feelings about something they love and invest so emotion in, can have dire consequences for future viewership.
But I digressâŚ
Like I said, the good news is that we can now be even more certain that TPTB are not putting stuff on screen to placate fans. They arenât stringing people along through the CANON material and including scenes to fill the âfans want thisâ quota. They do that off screen through interviews, social media and promotional material. Thatâs where trolling can go rampant and unchecked because itâs not a part of the narrative and thereby isnât written in stone or captured on film. The canon stuff on screen is the only verifiably truthful account and even that can be somewhat skewed until the story arc in question wraps up.Â
This means that what we do see on screen is even more deliberate because its there specifically to serve the story and nothing else. If we see it, it matters to the story and the people in that story. Nothing more, nothing less.
With that in mind we can be even more confident that all of these things happened for a narrative reason and not as filler to regulate the fandom atmosphere off screen.Â
The CARYL reunion wasnât there to calm CARYL shippers after Season 4.
âConsumedâ wasnât fan-service for Carol and Daryl fans.
The âCherokee Roseâ wasnât included in the script because Gimple wanted to pay homage to Carol and Daryl fans.
Carol and Daryl werenât separated because the show wanted to âdiscourageâ people from shipping them.
The CARYL hug 2.0 wasnât written to remind fans of their relationship to get them to keep tuning in.
Does this look like Gimple and Co trying to make CAROL fans happy?!
All of these moments were about Carol and Darylâs story. Not about marketing and keeping CARYL popular.Â
They were included because they were always meant to be there.Â
Motivated by the story and uniquely bound only to the relationship model the sequestered writers want us to see and feel, and not by what we want or what we donât want to see.Â
The good news is the writers too feel that Daryl and Carol love each other. They are keeping CARYL alive for a reason and since they arenât trying to please anyone, it can only mean that there is already a plan in motion. ENDGAME!Â

The Classics - CARYL Angst Stew
As difficult as it is to have faith in the writers and their ability to tell this story and honour these characters, I wanted to remind everyone that while Season 6 has been brutal in terms of CARYL screen time, it still followed a recipe TPTBestablished for CARYL from the very beginning.
Angst, Angst, Angst⌠TO Relationship progress, Emotional payoff, Aww factorâŚ
Take a look!
Rick not so subtly tells Daryl that he is free to leave the group - âyou donât owe us anythingâ - but Daryl chooses to go look for Sophia on his own anyways. The remark leaves him bristly of course and he makes sure to scuff Rick with the bold - âIâm better on my ownâ - remark before he leaves. However all that manly angst leads up to the Cherokee Rose scene, whereDaryl initiates his very first emotional connection to the group and does it to make Carol feel better. She follows that up with the first forehead kiss to both thank and comfortDaryl after he is injured in the woods.
The fight by the barn causes Daryl to blow up at Carolâs concern for himbut he doesnât take long to make things right and cleverly uses an entireCherokee Rose bush to apologize.
The aftermath of Sophiaâs death Carol and Daryl deal with their grief through a series of angsty moments but ultimately their relationship is solidified because of those confrontations. In fact had the angst not have occurred it is doubtful that Daryl would have stayed with the group at all.
Carol not only made sure Daryl stuck around, she also made sure he thought about what his role in the group should or shouldnât be. There were some growing pains there but both of them TRIED hard to find a balance and keep their friendship very CLOSE.
When the farm was overrun, Daryl went back on his motorcycle to save Carol and she stayed with him for far longer than it was necessary. However the closeness was interrupted by a misunderstanding between the two of them regarding who Carolâs âman of honourâ truly was. The season ended on a âweirdâ note.
Season 3 started off with Carol and Daryl closer than ever. They fought together, joked with each other and even teased about 'screwing aroundâ. Things looked really good. Until of course the walkers attackedâŚ.againâŚ.

Carol: Love Will Bring Her Back
While Carolâs latest arc is poorly presented and completely non-sensical, itâs given purpose can be traced back to Carolâs confrontation with Paula, and Gimple spinning it as a cautionary tale of what Carol could ultimately become if her life trajectory stays the same. It would have been a compelling transformation if it had been explored and developed properly but regardless the material we have been given does give us a strong hint as to where this is all going.Â
Carol and Paula were compared and contrasted heavily on a very personal level in the âSame Boatâ and through their confrontation similarities emerged and connected the two women to the present.
Prior to this encounter Carol was shown agonizing over a âkill listâ that featured 18 people. The night we saw her pull the list out she couldnât sleep and decided to take a walk presumably to distract herself.Â
We saw that her avoidance led her to T*bin and it was made clear that his view of who Carol is was completely distorted. She was playing a role and seeking comfort with someone who didnât know the things she had done and the emotional damage those things have plagued her with. T*bin was a nice guy she could pretend with.
I stopped counting when I hit double digits. Thatâs right around the time I stopped feeling bad about it. I am not like you. Iâm still me, but better. I lost everything and it made me stronger.Â
During the clash between Carol and Paula we found out that Paula too had a list of people she killed but had discarded it and didnât care about it anymore. She stopped FEELING bad about it and had become methodical about the violence surrounding everybody. Paula had lost her humanity almost completely because she had become numb to everything but survival. She wasnât living anymore. She was existing. Nothing more, nothing less.
âI see exactly who you are, Carol. I know. Youâre pathetic. You wanna think weâre just the same? Go ahead. Youâre wrong.Heâs just a warm body for my bed. Thatâs it.â
Paula also had a âwarm bodyâ in her bed. A man she had a relationship with but didnât care or want to care about. She didnât even FEEL love or affection anymore. She was numb to both pain and pleasure. She was practically dead inside because of the things she had done to survive. Carol wasnât like Paula. She didnât want to be like Paula. Her list was still bothering her. Paula had stopped counting her kills when she reached double digits and stopped caring about what that made her. A monster. Paula had a 'warm bodyâ she was sleeping with and Carol had started a relationship with a man she wasnât emotionally connected to. Her relationship with T*bin had no substance or depth. We were never shown any indication that Carol was emotionally FEELING the connection she shared with him. As distasteful and pointless as it is Gimple didnât show whatever was going between the two of them because he wanted us to see T*bin as a 'warm bodyâ in Carolâs life. Gimple chose T*bin because he was someone we didnât know and someone not developed enough to have much of a personality or definition for Carol to be associated with. Not as callously as he did with Paula but still someone who Carol wasnât FEELING anything with.
Carolâs departure is the culmination of her breakdown and her attempt to escape becoming like Paula. The biggest reason Carol kills is because Carol loves and according to her letter, she leaves Alexandria because she knows that as long as she is around people she cares about she will keep killing. The trajectory of her evolution is supposedly able to lead her into becoming like Paula and she thinks that she can escape that fate by removing opportunities and circumstances from her life that would lead her to keep killing⌠Le sigh!
Spoilers indicate that Carol breakdown will continue and her emotional state will plummet even more in her desperation to avoid losing all of her humanity. Gimple will practically decimate her heart as she tries to avoid FEELING love in order to stop being compelled to kill for LOVE. As despicable and frustrating as this arc is the fact that Carol isnât going to be beaten down completely (she doesnât die) means that this is actually a road that ends with her transforming and moving into a new stage of her life.Â
Carolâs motivation to kill will likely end up being more balanced but the biggest thing that needs to come from this is Carol being able to allow herself to both FEEL and HEAL the things sheâs been holding back. The only way that Carol can assure herself that she wonât become like Paula is to allow herself to FEEL the things she does, the people she cares about and the things she has gone through.Â
Since emphasis was made on the WARM BODY factor then perhaps Gimple will give Carol the opposite of a WARM BODY and let her FEEL the love she desperately needs. Love with a man who loves and sees all of her. A man who has always made her FEEL things the most. A man whose eyes she avoided because she knew he would see the truth about her. A truth she wasnât ready to face yet.
Carol told Daryl that she canât let herself FEEL. And if everything comes back on TWD then maybe Carol can tell Daryl when she finally CAN.
