dear everyone who thinks izzy hates clary: Â you are wrong, Â thank you and goodbye.
listen, i think itâs important to remember that isabelle didnât grow up around females. Â she was raised with three brothers, Â and sheâs pretty well accustomed to having zero competition for their attention. Â even when alec wanted to leave his baby sister behind for super secret missions, Â jace insisted on bringing her along because she was necessary. Â important. Â skilled. Â sheâs literally always been an integral part of their lives.
enter clary, a tiny little mundie who had zero concept of the shadowhunter world.  it would be stupid to say izzy was nice to her in the beginning, because she really wasnât.  why would she be?  clary was a threat to everything izzy loved and held dear.  clary had captured every ounce of jaceâs attention,  which izzy had literally never seen.  claryâd almost immediately figured out alec was gay,  when izzy had spent her entire life trying to protect alecâs sexuality until he was ready to come out.  sheâd suddenly put all of them in terrible danger,  with jace throwing himself headfirst at whatever might threaten claryâs wellbeing  (and, therefore, putting her other big brother in physical danger,  because wherever jace went, alec went too).
not to mention the fact izzy just simply didnât know how to interact with girls her own age. Â sure, sheâd spent some time with aline, Â but even those moments were few and far between. Â the lightwoods were isolated, Â cast out from the shadowhunter world because of her mom and dadâs actions. Â izzy didnât know how to form friendships, Â or even attempt to bridge the massive gap that existed between herself and clary.
even worse, Â clary seemed totally and completely unaffected when she briefly thought jace was her brother. Â true, Â we all know how badly it impacted clary inside, Â but izzy didnât know that. Â all she saw was clary happily dating simon and pretending jace had never meant anything to her. Â without hearing a word from jace, Â izzy knew, instinctively, how much that hurt him. Â sheâd seen the way he looked at clary before, after all. Â she knew what he felt. Â she knew this would nearly be his undoing, Â and she was furious with clary for it. Â
â⌠and i guess you couldnât have helped that you just went right on ahead and dated simon afterward like you didnât even care. i thought once jace knew you were his sister, heâd give up and get over it, but he didnât, and he couldnât. i donât know what valentine did to him when he was a child. i donât know if thatâs why he is the way he is, or if itâs just the way heâs made, but he wonât get over you, clary. he canât. i started to hate seeing you. i hated for jace to see you. itâs like an injury you get from demon poisonâyou have to leave it alone and let it heal. every time you rip the bandages off, you just open the wound up again. every time he sees you, itâs like tearing off the bandages.â
âi know,â clary whispered. âhow do you think it is for me?â
âi donât know. i canât tell what youâre feeling. youâre not my sister. i donât hate you, clary. i even like you. if it were possible, there isnât anyone Iâd rather jace be with. but i hope you can understand when i say that if by some miracle we all get through this, i hope my family moves itself somewhere so far away that we never see you again.â
remember when i said izzy doesnât hate clary? Â she doesnât. with time, she finds out that clary and jace arenât siblings. Â what does she do? Â she finds jace in the middle of a battlefield and tells him the truth. Â she literally risks her own life to ensure jace knows he isnât wrong for loving clary. Â how! can! anyone! say! she! hates! clary!
look, Â becoming friends with clary is something that takes work on izzyâs part, iâm not going to lie. Â she has every reason to be jealous of her, Â from the fact clary is petite (izzy has always wished herself to be smaller) Â to the fact jace would risk his life for her without question. Â thereâs also the fact sheâs simonâs very best friend, and izzy spends the span of multiple books fearing that he loves clary in a way heâll never love her. Â AND ALSO the fact clary can love so easily, Â so wholeheartedly, Â while izzy herself is hardwired to hold back. Â to izzy, clary is the very antithesis of everything she is, and thatâs incredibly difficult for her to accept.
but she does. Â with time, Â izzy comes to view clary as a friend. Â as the sister she never had, Â both because sheâs jaceâs partner and simonâs parabatai. Â there are very few people in this world that izzy honestly trusts and befriends, but clary is on that short list. Â
ânothingâs ruined,â isabelle said in a more normal voice. âand no one needs to be killed. clary, iâm getting married! to simon! iâm happy!â she beamed. âi used to think there was something about giving your heart to someone. that they might break it. but I know better now. and itâs thanks to simon, but also thanks to you.â
âwhat do you mean, thanks to me?â
isabelle shrugged a little shyly. âitâs just that you love so much. so hard. you give so much. and itâs always made you stronger.â
clary realized she was tearing up. âyou know, you marrying simon means weâre going to be sisters, basically, right? isnât the person married to your parabatai like your sister?â
isabelle threw her arms around her. for a moment, they clung to each other in the shadowy hallway. clary couldnât help but remember the first friendly overtures she and isabelle had really made toward each other, so long ago now, here in the hallways of the institute. i wasnât just worried about alec, i was worried about you, too.
and if you donât see that, i feel sad for you, Â because their friendship is beautiful.
