the son of a marine corps sergeant and a nurse student. 

the youngest in the family, the only child between him and his biological parents, but he has two older paternal half-siblings, selena shin and james shin. with his adoptive family, he has two older siblings who are adopted as well, jeremy kahananui and priscilla kahananui, and a new sibling on the way.

chanhee grew up out of wedlock between a marine corps sergeant and a nurse student who was on vacation in jeju at the same time. their relationship was rocky for a bit, since their morals often clashed regarding their respective career choices, but nonetheless they got together! they lived in jeju for a bit until carter’s mother was feeling better enough to travel. during her pregnancy, she got a call from a woman claiming to be her boyfriend’s wife and that he had an entire family back in australia for him. she kept calling and making death threats towards carter’s mother, so right after chanhee’s father filed for divorce, the soon-to-be family moved to hawai’i. 

chanhee was born in honolulu where he spent a short amount of time in. his father’s ex-wife returned and wanted to try and start over with the family, on a better foot. the family fell for it until they returned home to find his ex-wife attempting to kill chanhee. chanhee’s father immediately ordered a restraining order against the entire family, including his kids, and the divorce process was pushed faster and soon finalized. the entire situation messed up his mother for the rest of her life after. she soon found out she was diagnosed with a terminal illness and lived with a timer above her head. this and the situation with her now husband’s ex-wife ultimately drove her to her suicide, with her son stumbling upon her body.

his father really couldn’t function without his wife, so he decided to pursue his career head-on to forget this all ever happened, and gave up his son to adoption without a second though, where he was eventually adopted by a family in kailua. chanhee was renamed carter, his mother was a korean-american woman who had difficulties conceiving her own children and a native hawaiian man. aside from his parents, carter gained two older siblings, also adopted, and for a while was the youngest. his parents played heavy parental roles in carter’s life and he grew up in a happy life. his parents pushed him to do multiple things so he was involved in sports as a child. carter read a lot growing up, especially his mother’s old medical books. he gets far as a child, already above his peers and normal grade level expectations. he took ballet and gymnastics as a child, which allowed him to flourish in dancing once he decided he wanted to learn some of that. soon he fell in love with plays, hip-hop and poetry. 

he’s discovered at a local talent show by a vacationing bc entertainment recruiter and carter declines at first, not thinking too much of it and unable to see himself as a celebrity. the recruiter gave him his card and carter called back a year later. his time at bc is difficult, but memorable. he was quite unprepared and the fact he spoke broken korean made things worse, reaching out to fellow trainees and teachers became a chore. he decided to keep to himself and soon started excelling, becoming a well-known trainee during his period. he spent every waking moment training, whether it be things he was good at or not, he was always doing something, sacrificing sleep as he practiced until the early mornings. most of the time he was practicing singing, dancing, rapping, his fluency in korean, or composing his own lyrics.  he really didn’t sleep as a trainee. the only time he got a decent amount of sleep was once bc announced he would be debuting with charm.

carter is the biological son of SHIN KISUNG, a sergeant in the marine corps stationed in hawai’i who has no relationship with his son. his mother is the late BAE CHAEYEON, a former nursing student. his adoptive father is nathan kahananui, a retired athletics doctor and his adoptive mother is allison kahananui, a retired brain surgeon. through his older sister, he is an uncle.
