hc question: what does it mean for (and to) kiara that her mom and jj's dad are, as you aptly put it, "the same song but a different chorus"? how does she deal with that, if she deals with it at all?
the reason why kiara's parents and jj's parents are the same song but different chorus, is due to the fact that there are some semblance of abuse that is happening, though jj's situation is worse substantially (especially since jj's abuse is in the physical, emotional, and mental state, whereas kiara's is just the emotional and mental state).
we have seen kiara's parents show examples of behaviors that can illustrate overprotectiveness, which is also seen as abusive especially through kiara's eyes. they harbor control over her social life, by isolating her away from the pogues frequently, since they view the pogues to continuously be bad influences while grossly ignoring the way that kiara feels comfortable in her own skin and who she is when she is with them. kiara's parents are the type who believes that they are doing in their power what is best for kiara by constantly trying to take her away from her pogue friends (who she has said on numerous occasions that they have saved her life literally from when she was suicidal). the pogues represent a part of kiara's true self, especially when it comes to what it is that she truly enjoys, so by constantly trying to take her away from that, and isolate her away from her pogues, especially when the kooks have shown no interest in accepting kiara (ex: kiara's kook year), makes kiara struggle with her mental health.
they also have invasive behavior, such as invading into her personal life and monitoring her whereabouts and activities (though most parents do, but this also shows that they lack trust in her and refuses to listen to her and therefore makes her feel as though she is not listened to, unlike when she is with the pogues, who take her ideas into consideration, listen to her and her feelings on topics that people have otherwise made her feel foolish for (ex: kooks don't care about baby turtles like she does, and she would go down to bat to protect them and ensure that they reach the ocean). this shows dismissal of her interest which makes her feel invalidated and misunderstood.
which falls under the same vein of emotional manipulation and identity conflict. the reason why kiara took on kook year was due to the fact that she thought that maybe, finally, she should listen to her parents and do what they say because they're the adults right? they should know what is in her best interest, that maybe she's not recognizing? but instead of being accepted, she was even further isolated and made to feel like there is something wrong with her (from all angles of her life), which can lead to depression and PTSD and thus, why kiara was ready to take her life to get away from the warring with herself on what she truly is to her core (what her parents do not like, and do not see) and what she is expected to be (high social expectations and norms that clashes with her values and the pressure to conform which leads to stress and anxiety and identify conflict).
the similarities that come into play between kiara and jj's parents are due to the fact that both parents struggle with the need for control (kiara's parents try to control her out of desire to protect kiara to their standards which causes emotional trauma, but jj's establishes control through abuse and intimidation). the lack of understanding and the emotional consequences due to such (kiara suffers from feelings of isolation, and jj does in a sense at times as well with his own father in a different vein). both jj and kiara find that they need to "escape" home because home doesn't offer much of a comfort for them, and therefore, they find solace at the chateau (john b's home, the pogue homebase).
with her parents continuously crossing her boundaries, and taking her away from her friends (either themselves, or through kitty hawk's security team literally kidnapping her shortly after she tells her own mother how she was kiddnapped herself several days prior), it can instill a sense of anxiety within herself and cause a fear of rejection from both family and friends, making it harder and harder for her to be able to form new relationships due to it.
i could go on and most of this is an unorganized mess of me word vomiting about kiara and her parents (with some mentions of jj and his dad's parenting style) and how it impacted kiara in a separate way! i don't want to discredit the abuse that jj has endured and how shitty of a father that luke maybank can be, but it is interesting if you think about the way that kiara and jj lead their lives in the aftermath of how their parents treated her.
