not a lot is known about dante's life before he went to the US – at least, not that he has disclosed. if they did, they'd think they'd led a fairly mundane childhood: both moms being accomplished in their respective lines of work, not a lot of friends, played cello in high school band, was often taken to the park to look at the insects between the blades of grass, tuned in every afternoon at 6PM for jugate conmigo... one must therefore wonder how such a run-of-the-mill existence led to such an esoteric character.

It is such a personality that drew Andrei in so quickly, perhaps. From their very first meeting, there was just a certain allure to him that separated him from all the noise, that made him sparkle brighter than anyone else in the room. that made Andrei question certain life decisions he had never stopped and wondered before. Dante, naturally, plays into it for kicks at first, like he's done all his life – no real ties, no real emotions. in his own vision, he entertains Andrei because they find him amusing.

But that facade might change.

to be honest i'm not quite sure what to post about the au to present it better in the future, beyond like doodles and showing other designs/characters and whatnot ... it's a long continuous story tho so sharing it is so hard

i have all the info and really want to share my au, just don't know where to start honestly :')

bad news for all: there's a man :-(

if "tough love" students were all placed on a leaderboard, andrei would be first. by a landslide. born into a military household – and almost immediately thrown out onto the streets, then into TTI centre after TTI centre – taught him a lot about the harshness people expect from you. to show feelings was to admit defeat, to admit softness, to admit vulnerability, to barely be able to call yourself a man. and so, he declared war on everything he thought would make him look weak to others. the toughest kid in the playground.

however, one feeling was so strong it dissipated through the cracks: his unwavering, fiery love for one lotus atropos. lotus took care of him at every single turn in their lives, to an almost parental degree, even though he hates to admit it. they've been together since age 7... he never saw a reason, or a possibility, for them to break up.

even 5 years later, when he convinced lotus to run away with him, running through thoroughfares with dirt splattered across their intertwined hands.

even 10 years later, when they first kissed, and he'd bring them coffee during long study nights.

even 12 years later, when he betrayed her and went to war. and lost a leg. and half his hearing. and half his mind.

even nearly 20 years later,

when he finds someone else.

...looks like years of running away from your feelings will have drastic consequences for the whole lot.

this is a good moment to say that lotus' gender expression is very femme presenting up until he's admitted to a psych ward (which happens after he overdoses... which happens after the breakup with andrei) and so to literally get rid of the weight of the past somewhat he cuts his hair super short and starts dabbling more in presenting more masc

but bro has never cut his hair before (just his fuckass bangs) so he looks like a little boy at first

i had sm fun drawing this she's the most beautiful ever ever oh my sweet flower girl...

growing up in a nunnery in the french countryside, hidden away from society and the ongoing war, it's easy to see why renée can appear so childish sometimes. her cuteness and positivity is what carried her forward in life, albeit leading to some toxic positivity symptoms that isolated her from most of her family members and friends. she doesn't want to bother people with her own issues for thinking it's selfish to do so, happily being the "girl with 0 problems" for everyone else. she's meant to spread joy, after all... right?

inside of her family, she carries the title of the guardian of the human connection to nature. that offers an easy explanation for her residence in the woods of sleepy Las Flores, in a cottage filled to the brim with all varieties of plants, flowers, and produce... oh! and don't forget her 86 animals (from her last head count, at least), which she arduously takes care of every day. sometimes, she thinks her best friends are flora and fauna. they're way easier to understand than people, anyhow. but her childhood companion, ligeia atropos, is soon to call her about a certain special missing co-worker and sister... and renée will have to deal with real, real issues. ones that a warm smile and a hug perhaps can't fix.

i've been waiting for so long to properly introduce this fun guy!!!!

Lotus grew up initially in a doomsday cult in a british-scottish commune in Enterprise, Alabama, which obviously means she is used to general chaos plaguing her existence. she was adopted by the atropos at the age of 12 and moved in with them, along with her life-long best friend, andrei (who he would start dating at 16). a natural overachiever and academic, lotus always handles any duty with grace and discipline, even if doing such duties frequently entails denying their own well-being. some might thing she snaps too easily, is too rude, or too negative: but it doesn't take a lot to see lotus' many faults as indicative of a very, very deep and complex root inside them.

However, for now, since her boyfriend decided to go to war and came back half-deaf, with one leg missing, and with half his mind gone, lotus has been repressing and building up emotions for a long, long time. although he tries to keep it inside for the sake of peace – and perhaps the fear of being alone – this might not work forever...

especially as some new players come into frame to disturb their 19-year-old status quo.

I thought it would be useful to present the general info about my AU so you guys are caught up to date when I start introducing the goobers™

INTRODUCTION

Since the inception of life as we know it, there have been two major forces of life: Life and Death. 

Of course, Life became more and more elaborate, separating into factions, families, "Good", "Evil", etcetera, etcetera. Death remained simple, down a single lineage which only began very late in history. 

However, all those related to those mythical entities became known as "Adons", or "Higher Beings". Those establish the more powerful creatures in this universe. The faraway descendants of those blessed with the Adons' power were named “Demi-Humans”, and for a long time, their superhuman abilities remained largely in dormancy and they lived concealed from human society, until the Adon of Evil, Florença, launched a war on her sister, the Adon of Good, Maria Célia.

Those with abilities that had erupted had been disappeared over time, sent underground to establish their own communities. When they were released into the surface by the Adon of Evil, their fight for territory added even more conflict into the war.

Angered at being hidden, communities of Demi-Humans began battles with nearby human communities for territories and dominance, which ultimately ended with the Adon of Evil settling an agreement for the peace of both species, now mutually aware of each other, for reasons unknown. 

Many Demi-Humans do not yet know how to control their powers… if they're aware of them at all. 

…But this story is not about that. 

It concerns descendants of the higher beings and their drama, yes–but it's a story about people above all. 

We follow Lotus, a direct descendant of the Adon of Death Desdemona, in her struggle for love, understanding, and identity, passing from her childhood-love-turned-toxic Andrei, to her attempts to reconcile her relationship with love when it is reintroduced into her life as something that is not necessarily always bad. 

She represents a bigger struggle for identity present in a modern society where nonchalance runs rampant, and above all, I hope to be able to tell a story about overcoming it, and coming to terms with your own love, past, and future.

CONCEPTS

MORTIS, INC

Desdemona's company for all things surrounding mortal death, which they created after being bored for a couple billion years, and wanted to interact with humans more (in the only way she could think of without touching them. Not counting her plan B, which was being a Youtuber).

It's meant to be a satire on capitalistic loopholes in multinational companies, because everyone dies, right? With them, you can enter a contract (paid contract, of course, a "death insurance") where they make your death “painless and swift” when your eventual time comes, since they have a database with everyone's death date recorded on it, past, present and future. However, only the Atropos' (at first instance) and some higher ranking reapers are allowed in it, of course, as it’s highly classified information.

It's a loophole because even if you don't sign a contract with MORTIS, since they contain all the reapers under Mona's rule, they're gonna be the ones that reap you anyway, and a "painless and swift death" is subjective (for example, the Oceangate submersible tragedy was horrible, but the guy's deaths were so quick they couldn't even process what was going on), so it’s all legal loopholes being exploited. This loophole relies a lot on “human idiocy”, as Desdemona calls it, through things like religion, diferent ideas of what afterlife is, and the fact that only Higher Beings know what really happens anyway. Hooray, fearmongering!

All the Atropos' (Family of the Arkon of Death) work there except for Genesis, who is a "housewife", unable to work due to debilitating depression. 

The kids are the heads of specific departments, Lotus being unnatural social passings that are gory or brutal in nature (such as murders, suicides, etc), Ligeia being natural passings (things relating to old age, mostly), and Lenore being diseases and clinical deaths that didn't occur in a natural manner (such as dying of AIDS, or hypothermia (pestilence in general), but not things like cardiac/organ failure due to old age) (That is, before she quit the company...).

Since Lenore has no magic, she was stuck with paperwork in MORTIS, sometimes being outside her department, until she quits to pursue a medical career, fascinated by the diseases she saw. Desdemona feels betrayed by the fact Lenore chose a career that actively tries to stop death (and thus, her work), and she is therefore turned into the black sheep of the family, not speaking to Desdemona for a while and causing public scandal over her “disownment”. Annabel Lee Nerium, who was not yet in MORTIS up to Lenore quitting because she was too young, took on her post. 

Onto afterlife: they have this little thing that doesn't really interfere with their lives. That being the respective rulers of Hell, Heaven and Animal Afterlife. teehee!

Hell is the biggest capital and it's a surprisingly efficient self-managing regime, which makes Lo's presence not necessary for diplomacy but to instead come up with torture methods for Hell (which is why Dante is hired in the future) and to be a superficial authority figure to settle complicated matters in the rare occasions those rise up. 

Ligeia hates Heaven because it's boring (just old people and babies that died during birth)

and Lenore cannot work in another realm due to her disability, so she takes over MORTIS affairs with humans (basically HR) in addition to her post overseeing clinical deaths(until she quits, and human affairs start taking place according to the nature of the affair, which decides who they will talk to). 

Now, Lotus is a special case because they're a full fledged workaholic. So, Mona, in order to keep him closer and perhaps even bond with him, assigned him the role of a special agent that hunts and tortures the people who tricked Mona into living longer, literally having deals with the devil they thought they could cheat and win in. This is what Lo does mostly, with other occupations being the head of a department at MORTIS and being the ruler of Hell respectively. It's fun because their job requires them to go around and interact with the world around them, so even if, say, he's having brunch with Renee and Due or a couple of drinks with Dante or on the beach with Ray, they are always sort of working, as they can always be hunting a person down or analysing the people in said environment!

IMPORTANT (fictional) LOCATIONS

DUSTFORTH, FX

Located in the middle of San Francisco and Portland. One of the many areas demi-humans resurfaced from after the barrier was broken, and the biggest one. The weather is cold and snowy year-round, strangely (new snow doesn’t fall due to the lack of clouds, but it doesn’t go away, either), being popular for being the most heavily militarised area of the Foxboran Area (FX) after a series of civil wars and riots took place against the humans campaigning to make the city a tourist attraction for it being the most aesthetically pleasing out of the FX territories. 

Like most other Foxboran areas, it’s known to be dangerous, having a big criminal scene, an unfriendly community and harsh societal conditions that make it seem like you’re reading a creepypasta, or Marvel Comics’ “RUIN”.

LAS FLORES, TA

Located a bit upwards and to the west of Sacramento, it’s one of the Tallsbury Areas (TA), notably the only one brave enough to neighbour more dangerous cities. About a 5 hour drive from Dustforth. Surprisingly, the community manages to be warm, connected, and happy, really like something out of a Disney movie or a sleepy European village. The weather is very stereotypical with the “film Mexico/LA tint”, and the abundance of flowers and bees were big enough to literally name the town. Everyone in there knows each other, and they have surprisingly good systems to defend themselves from the adjacent territories with kindness and diplomacy as their main weapon.

CINDWICK, FX

Another FX territory (the waterfall that cascades and popularised the region is named Devil’s Falls). Located more south of San Francisco underneath the San Francisco Bay, providing wet, muggy summers and moist, quiet winters, it’s as peaceful as you can get in Foxboran areas, and often has its breathtaking views overlooked by its majoritarian elderly and quiet community. It’s for people who’ve had enough of the rest of the world and just want peace and quiet, and to not be interrupted: but then, of course, that results in a hidden hatred between neighbours and a nonexistent community.

Heyy, I'm back, kind of! This is my first actual rant, so I'm sorry if it's a bit boring or confusing. Feel free to ask me anything! This is just something that I've always had looming in the back of my mind, and I really want to talk about it. 

In October 2005, Pop Punk band Green Day released their seventh studio album, American Idiot. It follows the life of the central character, Jesus Of Suburbia, a middle-lower-class all-American teen who hates his town and pretty much everything. He's pretentious, a rebel, angsty; a faithless, working-class man who hates the system he's placed in, screaming for the rebels living in post-2000s America. It comes as no surprise, then, that @angeutblogo's Lasser would inspire her iconic character, Rurik Lidérc, off the song that describes this main character.

As the years went by, Rurik gained more and more traits, hobbies, a story, friends, and of course, multiple lovers. As it is today, you could call him a multifaceted character- I'm here to say that this perhaps might've been his downfall, too. As it stands, Rurik is a badly constructed character, where new information contradicts old information and traits that are not in line with the logic set upon him initially are imposed. It seems that the creators try and stuff him to the brim with different exciting ideas, but ultimately end up getting a messy clump of characteristics that results in many users having to redefine him with headcannons and rereadings, myself included, because he ends up being so confusing.

First, Rurik being a US Army veteran is one of the biggest pillars in his personality. Although not a lot of information is revealed about that part of his life specifically and the effects it had on him, we can deduce that it greatly affected him in more than one way, changing him fundamentally; PTSD. A prime example is that Lasser has stated that he has an aversion to loud noises, such as fireworks and thunder, but then proceeds to state that it only makes him have a minimal response of being "more alert". How can he be fundamentally changed as a person due to trauma and still only suffer minor damage? Are the creators afraid of making a character that's fully and realistically traumatized by war because it would compromise his appealing "sexy bad boy" nature? But then, that very nature is driven forward by the very fact that he's traumatized, that he's "angsty". It just confuses me how posts speaking of his trauma are immediately followed by posts describing his kinks and hypersexuality, and descriptions of his mental state are switched out for retellings of future events where "everything is all right finally", not bothering to make him go through the process of recovery, and research of trauma responses or toxic relationships is traded for discussions of what motorbike he has. It almost seems like the creators want him to be many different things that cancel each other out.

Thus, this contradiction leads us to the next point: Dante and Rurik have an open relationship, despite Rurik being shown to be possessive and emotionally immature. Rurik is, in simple terms, a manchild at times, stalking Dante when he feels like it, being insecure, and being sad by small things Dante says, in addition to threatening his exes. Those are toxic, insecure behaviours, of course, but it gets brushed off as "oh, but it ends in them sexually punishing each other" (going into how their relationship is sexualized, but that's a topic for another day), which in itself is contradicting because it's written to be a healthy relationship that's good for the both of them. And yet, we get bombarded with recounts of Dante being toxic to Rurik and vice-versa. He's also said to get extremely uncomfortable when Dante flirts with other women because he "can't compare", so how on earth could they have an open relationship without constant interventions and fights?

I believe that, if Rurik is insecure, it would naturally cause him to believe that Dante is replacing him if he flirted with another person. This is because he has a fragile ego, and people like him tend to fall into that insecurity (speaking out of experience and my interest in human psychology), and it would lead to constant fights, doubts, manipulation, and overall a bona fide toxic couple. Perhaps even worse than Lurik, as Dante is constantly described as psychopathic and manipulative, even to Rurik himself. They're shown to kind of fix everything with sex and "punishments", downplaying the other's insecurities and genuine feelings and promoting unhealthy dynamics. Rurik is not written to be someone who could have an open relationship that would be fair to himself and Dante, and yet, they push on, because of course they do; they are entirely centred around having sex, after all.

So, where am I going with all this? In all the glamourized media that we see, there's a strong tendency to try and make perfect characters. Rurik Lidérc is broken, angsty, insecure, and repressed, but that doesn't get in his way at all! All he wants is sex, drugs, and rock and roll. He reminds me of James Hurley from Twin Peaks: his conflict can be so well-explored, his trauma could be so fleshed out and the effects of trauma on the human mind could have given us a beautiful story of redemption, of growth, of understanding. But God, he just keeps making out with Donna all the damn time, and the camera always focuses on him like he's in a Playboy magazine. The realism, the beauty, the relatability- it's all sacrificed for middle schoolers to ogle at him and go "Wow, he's so misunderstood! I could fix him!". But that comes at the cost of a character that has the full potential to be truly amazing, as I've seen with my friends in the fandom.
