I personally hate that he kissed Elaine, but you can’t equate a grieving, traumatized and drugged up 18-year-old boy’s actions to that of grown men with wandering eyes who consensually cheat while stone-cold sober. He was wrong to think he could still ask Ruby to completely be there for him, just because he needed her. And he got the necessary backlash from her for it. He went to therapy, he learned his lesson. In real life many guys would never turn over a new leaf, but James is clearly not like that. If Ruby had never forgiven him, I would understand that, but if she takes him back after he has done the work, she shouldn’t get heavily criticized for it. She is neither a doormat, nor a heartless monster.
