In the Forests of the Night

The house isn't just still on fire. There are people still pouring gasoline on it. There are people denying that the house is even on fire. There are people who see the firefighters as terrorists. There are people who believe that firefighters deserve to die for trying to put out the fire.

I actually didn’t build these friendships until my 30s, and my BPD still absolutely affects me.

But one thing I had to learn is that healthy relationships became more possible when I stopped treating relationships like constant tests to prove I’m loved.

I used to spiral, accuse people of not caring, hint instead of communicate, and expect reassurance in ways that overwhelmed people. Even people who genuinely loved me.

And honestly, I had to learn that people are usually more able to show up for me when I invite them in instead of pushing them into a defensive mode with accusations.

That means telling people what I’m struggling with directly. Letting people know what helps. Accepting support without turning it into a test of whether they care “enough.” Learning emotional regulation and accountability. Learning that reassurance doesn’t work if I immediately reject it.
