THE HYSTERIA DESCENDS as the empty altar seems to grow wider, longer. there's a shadow cast where vows are left unstated, little unspoken words fluttering like petals down to the holy sanctum's alabaster-white floor. takeshi lingers in the back, watching as search parties break out, amused by the fanning imbeciles bedecked in heavy lace and roiling with conviction. they all scatter across the floor like pearls slung from a broken string, throwing open the doors and taking flight. monstrously determined in their search for the perpetrators of their afternoon's ruin.
he only stayed to taste champagne β or perhaps the three-tiered strawberry cake β but this has turned out to be more entertaining than he expected. he can't help the amusement bubbling up in him β the paranoia, the rumors, the stirring unrest that has shrouded the town in its embrace β the energy surrounding the doomed nuptials finally soured enough to spoil it!
manifestation is a tricky bastard.
when he hears the dry observations sound to his side, takeshi almost laughs. but there's only a flicker of humor in his dark eyes.
β a witch hunt seems the appropriate reaction considering the superstitions running rampant in this town. i swear i saw the priest grab a pitchfork. β no, not truly, but he did see a noble lady of a certain age fall to her knees to sob. β i believe the party's moved outside. β he leans forward to light a cigarette with the flame from a decorative candelabra before making towards the door.
he looks back, eyebrow raised. β you're welcome to join me in the hunt. unless you plan to, uh, stay here and pray for holy intervention. β takeshi couldn't think of the last time he'd witnessed something so asburd; it was almost fun.
βsuperstition is the favorite pastime around town,β katherina replied, watching the frenzy of people at the sanctum like it were a play. βthat, and the theatrics.β
she didnβt move to follow search party. let the others go storming through town like it was some kind of scavenger hunt. sheβd stay put, maybe read a bible if she happened to find one.
when he leaned back with the lit cigarette and a raised eyebrow, katherina tilted her head thoughtfully, βi was planning on staying back,β she said, βone or two lesser people won't make a difference.β
βbut if you have an extra cigaretteβ¦ i might reconsider.β
FEIYUE CHUCKLED AT THE QUESTION. there were always believers to be find - in an equal amount as the sceptics. but, what was divination but a well told lie, a self-fulfilling prophecy? nothing of true value, unless one had true gift of divination, of divinity that went along with it. "the usual. the number of children, the wealth & the fame. but, curiously enough, noting in particular about marriage. as if it was an unspoken secret - something forbidden to ask about." she had seen a grim fate in the cup, when the young lady of blackwood sipped & rolled it over. something eerie & unseen, but...
but, a disappearance would do - as would cold feet.
"indeed. it's such a futile chase. though, all will be revealed. they're either forgetful or on the run. what other option is there, in this lovely little town?" a more sinister thought pops into mind, but it remains unspoken - as such things always do. after all, who in their sane mind to come to think of the worst?
"so, how shall we pass the time? the time for their return is in a little under two hours. it's too long a wait to merely sit idly."
βmaybe god had other plans for this wedding after all.β katherina tried to keep the tone light, but it came out flat. too steady, too dry. she glanced toward the altar, then back to feiyue with a slight tilt of her head, βor perhaps someone else did.β
a shrug followed, graceful and unapologetic, βeither way, iβd say itβs bold to go missing on your own wedding day. it makes for a better story than a love match.β
βiβm open to suggestions, though. for passing the time,β she said after a second, βiβd offer a card game, but i suspect you prefer moreβ¦ mystical entertainment.β
PERHAPS. she didn't really know what claire thought - she was too much her mother's daughter to truly confide in nerissa. it may have stung once, but not anymore. still, her niece ( both of them ) had been cordial - if not even familial - with her. "perhaps you're right. though leaving notes is not the style around here, I believe. getting cold feet & vanishing might be the norm for nether." she snickered, though felt a tiny pang of guilt - as she had without consideration spoken against lasher's own elder sister - of whom no sign or sight or note had ever been found.
still, the lady grau wasn't the only runaway bride in their centuries old town - there were many other before her, as well.
"we might. though if that proves to be the case, I believe the whole town will be on the lookout for them. I do hope it won't come to that. perhaps a note really will come up during the search." nerissa shrugged, but the turned a smile towards her ward. "I heard the drinks for the feast are being kept behind the altar. do you think the good father will disagree if we open a bottle of something good? I'm sure a bottle or two won't be missed."
βvery impolite, making the guests wait around like this,β katherina remarked, her tone light but filled with irony, βbut at least itβs not the dead of summer,β she snickered. the mental image of traipsing through the town and the forrest in full formalwear, sweat sticking to the silk... no, thank you.
βtwo fewer people in the search party wonβt make a difference, then,β she added, giving nerissa a conspiratorial smile. her voice softened, amused and wry, βweβd better grab them fast before anyone notices. i could use some wine right about now.β
FEIYUE HAD NEVER REALLY MET THE BRIDE OR THE GROOM. she had met a few members of their families, when they'd come to her shop for some dried herbs or tea-leaves reading ( though not recently, no. ), but aside from those few occasions? no connection. she couldn't even say why they've invited her in the first place - after all, she'd only moved to netherbridge ten months ago.
it was not a long time to know someone - not someone as secretive as her.
still, her lips pulled into a grin at the other's words. "they were never late for my reading appointments, though I reckon they were too curious about it to miss it." still, you'd think the couple would be hyped to attend their own wedding. but, again... she did not know them - or cared to know them.
"whatever the occasion, I'm not moving from here. there will be enough people on the hunt as it is, I'll only get in the way. I'm staying right here."
βsorry to ask, but what exactly did those readings say?β katherinaβs voice was nothing short of curious, but her eyes were steady, measured. she didnβt believe in those things. not really. and most who made a living telling the future were, in her opinion, just really good liars, βdid they ever say anything about their union?β
βiβll be staying as well,β she added after a second, folding her arms again, eyes still on the sanctumβs entrance, βat least for now. maybe everyone will come back soon, after realizing thereβs no point in looking for people who clearly donβt want to be found.β

HER WARD WAS A THING MOST DELIGHTFUL. sitting in the front row - as the bride's family - nerissa had to mask a laugh with an aptly placed hand over her mouth & a cough. it is drafty in here, she whispered to the member of the groom's family to her right. turning to cast an amused glance katherina's way, rissa found herself interjecting before jessamine could bark whatever insult was cooking on her foul tongue.
"punctual, yes, but only to those things they wish to attend. perhaps my dear niece had decided to take a refreshing nap before the... eventful affair tonight will bring." still, her ward was right. why should they all traipse about in search for the unwed couple? for all she knew, they could've eloped.
she would've.
"think of it as a treasure hunt. if we find them in their separate estates & now writing about together, we lose for interrupting them." she snickered, but then added, "I think I shall stay here for the time being. maybe they return. will you keep me company?"
βor maybe she realized the wedding wasnβt meant to be,β katherina murmured, just loud enough for nerissa to hear. her gaze remained facing forward, tone as casual as if they were discussing weather and not the fact that the bride and groom were missing. βthough if that were the case, iβd have expected at least a note.β
she tilted her head slightly, the trace of a smile on her lips, βof course i will. i have no interest in stumbling through the woods looking for them, especially not in these shoes.β
katherina paused and her expression became more serious, as if the idea had only just occurred to her, βbut if they donβt returnβ¦ perhaps we should go after them. later, of course.β
she didnβt fidget like some. no tugging with her sleeves, no anxious glances toward the altar. katherina barbosa simply watched.
katherina stood off to the side, arms neatly folded, spine straight, her expression unreadable as her eyes swept across the room. the whispered theories sounded a bit too loud in her opinion. and most of them, she found laughable. she waited a moment longer, for some brave soul to offer logic, an explanation or even a decent lie. but when no one came, so she spoke, her voice soft and curious.
βand here i thought this family had a reputation for punctuality.β
she let it hang there. not an accusation. just an observation. βforgive me,β katherina added after a second, βi was under the impression today was a celebration, not a witch hunt. unless, of course, iβve misunderstood the performance.β
