A lot of people here in Germany say we have a 5th season, called “Fasching” or “Karneval”. You probably have already heard the word carnival, a huge celebration in Brasilia. The thing is “Karneval” or “Fasching” in Germany is very different from the carnival in Brasilia. Till now I always wrote two different words for the German carnival, because it depends on the exact place in Germany what it is called and how big the celebration is.  In my city, we celebrate a lot and we call it Fasching (I´m going to call it “Fasching” from now on).

But how do we celebrate Fasching?  

1. Faschingsumzüge

I am going to go to the “Faschingsumzug” with my friends. A Faschingsumzug is a big meeting where groups are wearing costumes and walk in a specific sequence through the city. The most groups have loud music and they are throwing candies for the children, who are watching with their family. I´m also going to watch and as a visitor, you wear also a costume. But to be honest with you, I and my friends don’t really have a costume…

2. School parties

My old school used to have a party. Everybody wore a costume and it was a lot of fun there, but my new school doesn´t have this tradition.

3. Prunksitzungen

The older people often go to “Prunksitzungen”. There are special events where also everybody wears a costume and there is a lot of music and comedy. There are also dance groups who perform on events like this. The groups are often dancing 2 different dances, the march, and the Show dance. When I was younger I also danced in a group like this and we also went to competitions.

4. Kinderfasching

There is also a special event for children. At the “Kinderfasching” the children can have their own party, with games, dance, music and more. I always liked it when I was younger
