everyone's all about queer subtext until it's aromantic or asexual
wild how long it took me to notice the close connection between my love of fiction and my social ineptitude; and I don't mean in the "nerds are so weird" kinda way obvsly
cause it seems so obvious that when passively consuming media my brain is not overwhelmed by having to constantly monitor and adjust my own (re)actions and therefore free to engage with the fictitious personalities presented by the narrative, allowing me to feel closer and more connected to them, the author's intent, and humanity as a whole
crucially most narratives also feature failure and messy minds as important facets of the human experience, which in a way makes fictional characters more relatable than real life people who are taught to hide vulnerability
and last but not least fictional media tends to really spell out for you what a person is like, how they think and feel, and why, so rather than superficial small talk you see (or read) a series of telling, often intimate moments that allow you much clearer insight into a person's mind than routine day-to-day interactions do
in consequence, growing up with a mind that habitually seeks solace and comprehension in books and tv series also means that metaphors and subtle, artful indications are much easier for me to interpret than real people's behavior, the latter of which I have to observe while simultaneously anxiously managing my own; and my own communication has become riddled with metaphors, similes, or outright references to fictional narratives, each of which I consciously have to suppress to sound more normal
Reblog if you are Bad Queer Representation.

These gentle, 400-pound giants are splashing back from the brink of extinction.
Green sea turtles have been an iconic endangered species since the 1980s, mostly due to bycatch in fishing nets and taking adults and eggs for food. I have core childhood memories of watching Steve Irwin talk about sea turtle conservation in front of a beach full of nesting green sea turtles.
After 45 years of conservation efforts, their population now meets the IUCN criteria for Least Concern rather than Endangered.
For a species with such a slow life history (it takes green sea turtles decades to reach sexual maturity) and a nearly global population, this is a Really Big Deal. This is the kind of long term conservation victory that many of the amazing humans who started working on green sea turtle conservation back in the 80s didn't live to see.
Just because something isn't fixed right away doesn't mean it won't ever be fixed. Just because the work is slow doesn't mean it isn't worth doing.
There is a quality of books (or movies or shows) that I can best describe as âstickiness,â which is separate from being good or even enjoyable: a sticky book is one I just keep thinking about. Sometimes itâs because a book is very good (e.g. The Locked Tomb), and sometimes itâs because a book is very bad (e.g. ACOTAR), but there are also very good and very bad books that are slippery, such that when Iâm done reading them they slip from my thoughts like water from a hydrophobic surface.
Tag yourself Iâm the âOverdressed and Underappreciatedâ. Artist : http://www.mattadrian.com/Â
If you thought âhm those styles of art AND speech seem very familiar,â you are right because it is the same person that did these
there's this study about how people like works of art better when they have "pretentious", "deep" or unexpected titles
and this study kinda has the vibe of seemingly unmasking the pretentiousness of the art world, but do people not understand that when an artist chooses a title that title becomes part of the piece of art? it also carries meaning and adds perspective and conveys emotion, so isn't it obvious and natural that that added layer
almost kinda funny atp

what if instead of having a fake name for internet personal-life purposes we could have a fake name for professional work-life purposes
fantasy culture where you have a different name for every role in your life and a true name that is extremely secret
you don't get to know all of me
it's tuesday you only get to know sara
you understand me to my soul
Honestly all the notes on this have been so good, here's a few of my favorites
MAGA boomers SHOCKED by 20y/o commie speaking fluent hog
Hog 201 for anyone interested in trying this:
Bodily autonomy (like abortion, anti draft, etc) -> âThe government shouldnât be able to force anything on my body I donât want.â
Anti surveillance -> âI donât trust big government/big tech (big brother if youâre feeling frisky) with the ability to spy on me and my family.â
Immigration -> âNext to all of us immigrated at some point, I donât see why the elites get to decide whoâs allowed to be where. Whatâs to stop them coming for me?â
Climate Change -> âBig oil shouldnât get to determine whether or not I get to go places. I donât want to be dependent on some big business to survive.â
State Violence -> âI donât want the goddamn secret police breathing down my neck! I trust my community a whole hell of a lot more to help me than I do the state!â
The vast majority of conservatives think of themselves as underdogs being repressed by the government/the elite, and they value personal freedom (specifically their personal freedom, they donât care about other people). The will almost always agree with leftist points if you can find a way to blame the problem on their vague enemies (useful, since rich people are the root of most problems), and tie it back to their ability to say fuck everyone else. NEVER appeal to science, theory, logic, or human goodness. Make it seem as if you are a paranoid lunatic who trusts no one. They love it.
#you need to tailor your arguments to people's existing values and priorities if you want to convince them#the flip side is that it's every bit as easy to tailor conservative arguments to convince a leftist audience#so don't get smug#you're not immune to this either Excellent tags by @glorious-spoon
I was trying to describe something that was pissing me off but xkcd already articulated it better than I could
I'm just like. I'm very tired of the hyper individualist cynicism that's so common on here, where so many tumblrinas feel very confident saying that nobody can read, everyone is dumb, most people are unwashed dullards etc. except for me, the very special tumblr user who's smart enough to notice that everyone else is very stupid. come on now.
I think if your worldview relies on the unquestioned assumption that most people suck you're like. how do I put this kindly. philosophically you've maybe never moved past the mindset of a socially uncomfortable seventh grader.
(no beers in) So how do you perceive me in the privacy of your thoughts
one of my least favourite things about this website. "op have you considered that [the thing op was saying]"
giggling at this because this is ALSO awful and is ALSO the exact opposite example of what i was saying in my post i love this

listened to an old delete this episode to remind myself of the hank green I like and to get out of the doom and gloom mindset and like the first thing he says is that part of why he likes twitter is that he gets to find out things he would otherwise never have encountered and that there he can connect with real experts on a plethora of topics...
rb to tell prev they're being so brave right now and pat their head a little please
