marc has of course been mentoring helicopter parenting him since day dot (this press conference particularly interesting. and this test footage). going through seven circles of hell watching him race (1) (2) cheering him up. checking on him (twice lol) caught here in 4k backseat riding. see also here in 2020 when álex was away at races and they kept in touch a very normal amount. can always count on him to celebrate álex’s championships more than his own (2) and to be vocally obnoxiously proud of him (2).

post-2015, there definitely is an us against the world vibe that contributes to this (and not wrongly 🔪). no tiene amigos apart from his baby brother. making crazy eyes at pecco as he stumbles through an apology for saying álex crashed him deliberately. jumping down the media’s throat (in his restrained and measured way) when there were rumblings that álex wasn’t racing him hard enough. and again. as their father said: 'hurt one of them, the other will bite you'.

and yes they live together in the hostile concrete cube, apparently chosen by álex who holds the impulse control in his half of the separated brain. (all in really is the best source for a lot of this circa 2022 stuff.) when marc moved to madrid in 2022 to help with his recovery, he asked álex to come with him, or more specifically ‘i’ll go if you come with me. if not, i won’t.’ their mother said ‘i’m okay because i know they have each other. they protect and take care of each other.’ enter álex taking utensils off marc when his arm is strapped up and helping with his physio exercises. as álex said, 'only we know what we've been through'. he was the one to tell him not to race in indonesia after his huge highside; crucially, marc listened.

after their 2020 teammateism was kiboshed by. well. The Arm and its associated horrors, they got their year together in gresini, which álex was, by his own admission, a big factor in encouraging and facilitating. the whole tnt interview from silverstone this year really is a goldmine, especially since you are far more likely to get an honest earnest answer out of álex, but also marc saying being in competition has made them closer.

finally, when marc was injured in mandalika (again 😶), álex was not only furious with the track safety but was on a mission to get done with his interviews and check on him.
