heyyy but have we talked about the fact that Sarek forced a mind meld on Saru without asking and how really not cool that was?
@narcissus-garden replied to your post:
I have the suspect that were the writers forgetting their mindmeld canon. :-/
Reaaally not cool to do that to the character with anxiety + from a species historically enslaved especially, but what can you do
@warsighted:
It was hard not to spend so much time down with the spore drive. Gabriel would never understand those captains who didn’t spend the time to really know his or her ship. They sat in The Chair and gave their orders but left all the flying and engineering to others. Lorca wasn’t about that. He wanted to know Discovery as well as his Chief Engineer. Be able to fly her as well as his Helmsmen. He wanted to understand this ship.
In the same manner he wanted his First Officer to be perfectly capable of captaining his ship when Gabriel was away from the Bridge. It was beneficial for him to give Saru plenty of chances to take control of the Bridge.
Down in Engineering, Lorca was in conversation with Stamets over some of the latest readings from the last few jumps. It seemed to be one of the few things both men could get excited enough about to forget that they didn’t get along too well normally. When the call came over the comm, Lorca held a hand up to Stamets before replying. “Alright. Be there in a jiffy.”
“Transport one from the Spore Drive to the Bridge, Quick as y’can.”
Gabriel straightened up as a shimmering light enveloped him and he appeared just a foot away from Saru on the Bridge. “What are we dealin’ with, Number One?”
Since he’d taken command in Lorca’s absence, Saru had become more comfortable having a ship under his control. Which was good, because he was a first officer now. He was likely to be one for some time yet, but it was a good sign that he might have his own ship someday. The same way Michael, if she hadn’t mutinied, would have had her own ship someday. And every moment he spent on the bridge better prepared him for that eventuality.
Saru was privately pleased with himself for not reacting with alarm to the Captain’s sudden appearance. Internally, his heart rate spiked and he felt his muscles tense at the movement, but he restrained himself long enough for his brain to catch up with his instincts. Instead, he turned towards Captain Lorca and inclined his head at the question. Number One. He had thought that Michael Burnham would eventually have her own ship and then he would hear it from Captain Georgiou. But Lorca was a good captain, if unorthodox, and Saru was proud to serve under him.
“We have received a distress signal from a nearby planet. It is Class M but non-Federation. We have thus far been unable to raise them on the comms, but Lieutenant Bryce is attempting to get more information.”
Discover AU where Saru stiffens up and falls over whenever he's startled (like a fainting goat)
i just read the disco writers talking about giving Saru a kitten in season 2 so please have this dumb sketch

heyyy but have we talked about the fact that Sarek forced a mind meld on Saru without asking and how really not cool that was?
The best way to define his movements after he transported onto the Discovery was briskly. He moved like a man with a purpose. Like he was meant for command. Most captains might consider his demeanour a bit of an affront, but Chris didn’t expect such a response from the Kelpien. He hadn’t held the position long and, frankly, the whole quadrant knew his name.
Chris simply moved like he knew that.
Head held high, he followed a petite ensign to the bridge and when he arrived, he gave a brief thanks before making his way over to the captain of the vessel. Smiling, he held out his hand to the Kelpien. “Commander Saru, pleasure to meet you. May we speak privately?”
@captainxsaru liked for Pike.
Saru was captain of the USS Discovery without holding the rank of captain. In the eyes of Starfleet, that had been the case for an unusual period of time; in the eyes of Saru and the crew of the ship, it had been even longer. He wasn't sure how well they would adapt to a new captain. He wasn't sure how well he would adapt to a new captain. But in the meantime, he was responsible for everyone else on board, and he had to act like it.
He remembered Captain Christopher Pike from when he served under Georgiou. He respected the man. He hoped he'd be extended the same courtesy.
When Pike entered, he rose. Shaking hands was a peculiarly human custom, and it always took Saru a split-second too long to react. He shook the Captain's hand. "Captain Pike," he responded. "Of course. Commander Burnham, the bridge is yours." He moved towards the door, glancing back to see if Pike was following. "The ready room is free."
❝ No, they can’t be… they can’t be gone❞ [So I have a HC whereby a young Scotty was propulsion officer on board the Shenzhou when she was taken out by the ship of the dead. This could be his reaction to the loss of Gheorgiu and Michael's betrayal?]
Saru had more experience fighting his own fears than your average second officer. It was what allowed him to keep his head when everything began to crumble, when Georgiou was dead and Michael Burnham had started a war with the Klingon empire. He bit back the grief rising up in his throat and kept his tone steady.
“They are. We are not, and we may yet stay that way, Lieutenant,” Saru said. “Can you continue to perform your duties?”

My thread tracker is finally updated again.
I owe a starter to @thelastweyoun.
I owe replies to @infiinitepossibilities, @warsighted, and @1stofficerspock.
I will do all of these this weekend!
If you think I owe you something that’s not on this list, shoot me a message--I’m a disaster and I probably forgot, please don’t take it personally!
Mirror!Verse Starter for first-officer-saru
@luck-over-logic:
“You are a fool. Loyalty can be bought and sold easily- there’s not a man on this ship who wouldn’t be swayed for the right price. You simply have to understand each man’s… currency.”
“And what is your currency then? Money? Power?”
“There is nothing you could offer me that would compel me to forsake my responsibility or betray my crew.”
First Contact - Georgiou & Saru
captainsofstarfleet:
In many ways, Saru was more formal in his behaviors than Michael, and Philippa often wondered why that was. It was a show of respect for her and her position that might be due to the prey nature of his species, in which she knew there was little she could do to influence him to relax around her. But it was also possible he was hurt, which she suspected was adding an extra layer of prim to his proper.
“No you’re not, or you wouldn’t be if you were a human, and as angry as I think you are. You’re thinking I had it coming,” she said with a smile. Had he been human, she’d have reached over and touched his arm, to show comradery and support, but she did not want to startle him. If they’d been onboard, it would be all right, but not out in the wild where anything could happen. The Kelpian was on high alert.
“But Saru, it is not a bad thing. It is not because I thought less of you,” she told him as the beach gave way to forest. Thick trees cast heavy shadows, and the ground was covered in dead leaves, needles, and winding vines with yellow egg-shaped bulbs. “Michael is ready to fly on her own. She will not be my first officer for long. It is time for her to get a command of her own. But Starfleet would prefer she be first officer before she gets a ship.”
Philippa stopped for a moment to bend down and untangle a vine from her ankle. Sharp thorns were caught in the fabric of her pants, and she bit her tongue when her thumb was punctured in the process. “Ouch.” She stood up carefully and frowned at the small cut.
Saru found it easiest to err on the side of overformality. This was always true, but particularly true when he was afraid, or upset, or angry. He was aware that his species caused people to prejudge him as highly-strung or overly cautious at best--or more often, as a coward. He had learned in academy that using the precision of rules of conduct and proper address encouraged people to take him seriously, to view his concerns as carefully calculated rather than the hysteria of a prey species far from home.
Prior to Burnham's promotion, he had begun to relax a little around Captain Georgiou, and around Michael as well. Although they frequently disagreed, he had once thought that she took him seriously as a fellow officer. Now he was less sure, and he found himself reevalutating his previous conversations with the captain in particular, wondering where he had misinterpreted her words, whether she had been patronizing where he had hoped for respect. "I am not human," Saru said, and it came out more sharp and clipped than he would have liked. He did hold back the other questions. Would you respect me more if I was? Would this be easier if I was?
"I see," Saru said, and considered her words carefully. His tension at the shadows of the trees and the soft crush of needles below his boots blurred with his previous irritation, and he carefully sorted the emotions to stop his anxiety from influencing their conversation. If that was her goal, then he could not be angry: he was not ready to be captain of a starship, he was ready to be the first officer of one and learn how. If she believed Michael was ready now, then it was the logical course of action. The last sticking point, of course, was that Saru would not have considered Michael to be any more prepared than he was. It hurt, then, that Georgiou judged her more capable.
Before he could decide how--or whether--to voice such concerns, he was distracted by Captain Georgiou's encounter with a vine. "Are you hurt?" The yellow bulbs had been more initially concerning than the vines, but the thorns were another matter. With some trepidation, he directed his tricorder at the plant, hoping it would indicate the thorns would cause nothing more disconcerting than a surface injury.

Love you and your tasty ganglia baby.
Please go back to dissolving in the mycelial network.
His ass may not compare to the previous captain but I still support Saru.
//I will grant you that he does not have much of an ass. Thank you for supporting my lanky alien child despite this defect.
I have a great ass. And I’d make a spectacular captain!
I did say I would consider recommending you for command track, but I have no comment on the former statement.

Well aren’t you just a tall glass of water!
(Tilly smiles and turns to leave, laughing over her shoulder:)
Sorry… Captain Tall Glass Of Water!
(Saru watches her go, unable to decide if he’s being made fun of.)
...computer. Please define the human idiom, “tall glass of water.”
