i suppose you could say that in shaping hickey's aspirations toward a tropical fantasy, the show effectively emasculates him in the way he's removed from victorian society? because he's evading the political economy that ostensibly defines the gentleman, and thus he is separated and excluded from victorian society. it therefore supports the idea of him as a working class, poor man, because they too are excluded from that new gentlemanly masculinity—in other ways, it supports the way his character relies on secrecy to create his image: his costume of a gentleman at carnivale is then equivalent to his secret trysts with billy in the hold of the terror, is then equivalent to his identity theft of the real hickey. he is pretending to be someone he's not but his low-class, emasculated truth surfaces over and over again to reveal more of the real EC underneath 🤔

Correct me if im wrong, but hicky needs crozier's approval in order to authenticate his masculinity. Regardless whether or not Crozier is an ideal version of Victorian masculinity (based on what you've told me, i don't believe he is but im not sure) he is still the dominating figure in the show. Crozier is what the man inspire to be. If crozier acknowledges hicky, it not only empowers his masculinity, he can also claim that he form of masculinity is the ideal. He can say that Victorian ideals of masculinity are inferior to his own. He can have his army of femboys and a tunnbaq.
