JAY HALSTEAD MASTERLIST
This was the part of this job that really sucked.
Having to go deep undercover was never easy, especially after he’d had more than just himself to think of. But it was feeling infinitely worse now as he sat on his couch wondering how on earth he was supposed to tell his daughter, who was eagerly looking forward to the holidays, that he wasn’t going to be around.
“Jay?”
Jay glanced up at your voice as you looked at him with concern.
You’d been with Jay long enough to know when something was bothering him so you just threw yourself down on the couch next to him. “Something wrong?”
Jay gave you a small smile and shook his head before he paused.
“What?” You asked again, prompting gently.
Jay turned towards you with a sigh, looking almost like a child who knew he was going to get in trouble.
“I gotta go under. There’s no way around it, we don’t have any other way to get these guys and… I don’t know how long it will be.”
The words floated between the both of you and you frowned. “That’s what’s been eating at you?”
Jay raised an eyebrow.
“Jay Halstead, you’ve been brooding almost the whole night over this? I thought something had happened to someone, I thought someone was in trouble.”
Jay gave you a guilty smile, before letting the smile drop.
“It’s already after Thanksgiving. I highly doubt I’ll be back for Christmas.” He said quietly.
You reached over, putting your hand into Jay’s. “We’ll be fine.”
“Sophia’s gonna be crushed.” He responded, his hand wrapping around yours like a habit.
You smiled. “Sophia is gonna be fine. Just manage her expectations about Christmas, I’ll take care of the rest. Go save the city.”
Jay pulled you gently into his embrace, and you leaned your head against him as he pressed a kiss on your head. “Thank you.” Jay whispered.
You smiled, without looking up at him. “Team effort.”
“All done!” Sophia yelled triumphantly, looking proudly at the ornaments she’d displayed out on the bottom part of the tree where she had been given free reign.
Sophia hadn’t been able to hide the disappointment in her eyes when her father had told her he’d be away for Christmas but she put on her big girl face anyway and smiled back at him. “I’ll take care of Mama!” She'd announced.
You’d smiled, as a look of absolute pride at his young daughter shone on Jay’s face.
Even though neither you nor Jay had an answer for her when Sophia had asked how long Jay would be away for, your daughter had taken it in her five year old stride, asking if the both of you could keep the decorations until Jay came home.
You’d agreed with a smile, telling her that the both of you could get the house ready for whenever Daddy came home.
So when the tree was finally finished on Christmas Eve, Sophia was very proud of herself.
You’d gotten a roast chicken just for the two of you, some mashed potatoes and ham, which was more than enough to last both you and Sophia a few days, inclusive of the fact that Will would either be coming around either today or tomorrow.
You didn’t think much of it when the bell rang, putting the row of sliced ham on the table before going to get the door, expecting Will to be on the other side of the door and preparing yourself to nag him for spoiling his only niece.
But when you opened the door, you froze.
“Surprise.” Jay’s voice was quiet, a big grin spread across his face.
You glanced backwards where Sophia was absolutely engrossed in what she was doing with the Christmas stockings before you turned back to your husband.
“What are you doing here? You said you weren’t going to make it.” You reached forward for a hug and Jay pressed his lips against yours, smiling before he put his arms around you.
“Lucked out.” Jay answered, still keeping his voice low.
You grinned, stepping backwards as you turned towards your daughter who still had her back to you.
“Sophia, guess who’s here?”
Sophia raised her head now. “Uncle Will?” She logically guessed, as she turned.
There was a quiet silence as her five year old brain registered that her favourite person was actually standing in the room.
“Daddy!” Sophia shrieked in delight, climbing to her feet and all but diving into her father’s arms. Jay laughed as he picked Sophia up, tossing her lightly into the air before giving her a hug, Sophia’s giggles echoing against the walls of the apartment.
Sophia’s excitement level was off the charts and you couldn’t help but smile as she insisted on showing Jay each and every ornament that she had personally hung on the tree, closely followed by any corner that had a hint of Christmas in it.
You let her give Jay the tour before the three of you finally sat down for a nice Christmas meal, even through the ruckus of Sophia spilling her drink before dinner even started, or her absolutely loud protests for her father’s attention.
But nothing could spoil the evening as you finally cuddled into Jay’s side after you’d cleared whatever was left of dinner, Sophia sprawled comfortably in her father’s lap, her tiny legs reaching across towards you. The cheesy holiday movies playing on the television merely reminded you how delighted you were to be where you were, Jay’s fingers moving absentmindedly along your shoulder.
It was about halfway through the movie when Jay glanced at you. Sophia had long fallen asleep in her father’s arms and you smiled, nodding as Jay extricated himself from the couch as gently as he could without waking Sophia and taking her to her own bed.
He was back out in a minute, climbing back into the couch by your side, quietly opening his arms so you could fit yourself more securely in them. You leaned against Jay, feeling him lean his face against your head gently and you smiled.
“Thanks for making it back.”
You felt him smile. “Lucky break.”
You turned your head to look up at him as the digital numbers turned to 00:00.
“Merry Christmas.” Jay whispered, with a smile.
You leaned further back so Jay could lean down comfortably, your return of Merry Christmas lost to his lips as he kissed you.

“Hi!” Kim greets her heavily pregnant partner with excitement. “You look like you’re going to pop.”
“I feel like I’m about to, even though she’s got three more weeks in here,” she breathes, a faint smile on her face. As excited as she is for this baby and wanting nothing more than to be able hold her daughter in her arms, she is ready for this pregnancy and all of its aches and pains to be over. "And, before I forget, I want to thank you for the baby and mommy baskets.“

You had an iron grip on your POLICE vest, vacant eyes glazed over as the past few hours replayed in your head; flashes of sound, snapshots of your own visceral panic as Jay caught two in his vest in the middle of a firefight.
[Flashback]
He was sprawled out in the middle of the street, caught short on a run for cover behind a vehicle. You looked on, bullets still flying as he stayed flat on his back, stunned and severely winded from the impact. You knew he’d be unable to move out of harm’s way as the firefight continued - playing dead was his best option in the moment, avoiding attention from the perps at all costs. You wanted to scream his name, desperate for any sign he was okay. You were assessing each angle and potential window to advance and drag Jay behind something, anything that you could use to shield him from any more bullets.
The others in the unit were sprawled out taking and returning fire just as you and Jay had been, you knew they wouldn’t be able to do much for Jay either. You just had to take a breath, focus, and bide your time.
The small mercy of luck was on your side, as only a maximum of two minutes had passed before patrol units advanced on the area and managed to overpower the assailants; disrupting the stand-off between them and your unit. It was your time to sprint over to Jay, skidding to a halt in the grey asphalt, plumes of dust around you as you checked him for any signs of bleeding or additional injury. His breaths were coming in harsh wheezes, blinking rapidly as though it would bring him to some clarity, he wanted to speak but only pained moans were manageable as he looked at you.
Your careful hands hover over him, quickly assessing his vest and the rest of his body.
A patrolman approaches, looking to assist you.
“Is he okay, detective? Do you need help?” You nod at them in thanks,
“He got hit hard, but the vest did its job. He just needs the ambo to take him to Med, can you check an ETA?”
“Of course, I’ll go see where they’re at.”
“Appreciate it.”
You turn back to Jay who’s mumbling profanities, his ears are ringing from the gunfire that flew over his position on the ground, hot streaks of pain surrounding his ribs.
“Hey, hey… it’s okay, the vest caught it. I can’t see any other wounds. Just take it slow, in and out, focus on me, okay?”
Your voice is gentle, like a far away dreamlike murmur, but a warm sensation on his cheeks brings him back to focus on your worried expression… that warmth is your hands, you’re cradling his face so softly, stroking a thumb across his stubbled cheek.
“The ambo is on its way, partner. And no protests, I think you’ve fractured a rib, if not broken. Internal bleeding is a risk. So just keep still, alright?”
Jay would protest under normal circumstances, but your concern and the agony combined only serve for him to let out a hoarse, “M’kay…y’ sound like… Will, ugh…”
You shake your head with a small laugh, even now he was finding a way to make a quip. You can’t help but tease…
“Somebody has to babysit your chaotic ass when Will can’t.”
Slowly, with a wince, he raises the arm that hurts the least to hold onto your free wrist, stroking softly at the pulse point there, sensing you need to know that he really is okay, all things considered. You look at his hand and then back at him, a tearful but relieved smile forming on your face.
You were about to say something when Ambulance 61 pulled up, dispersing the emotional energy between you and Jay as Sylvie and Stella jogged over with a backboard and the jump bag.
“Hey, Jay… getting into trouble again, huh?” Sylvie asks, checking him over as Stella holds his head still.
“You good, Halstead?” Stella smiles, brow bunched with concern. Jay attempts to wave them both off but hisses as a sharp twinge follows moving his arm upwards so fast.
You instantly lay a hand on his leg, squeezing softly to silently reassure him but not interrupt your friends working on him.
Stella and Sylvie don’t miss that gentle touch, but they don’t say anything, wondering if you had both finally admitted to each other how you really feel.
“You’re okay Jay, just keep still. You’re not bleeding but the impact was significant, let’s keep you nice and steady until Med can get an X-Ray, maybe even a CT scan…”
Jay nods, facial expression written in annoyance that he physically couldn’t just pretend he was all good to go and get on with the rest of his day.
“You got it… fuck!”
Jay can’t help his grumbles as they slowly move him onto the backboard, both paramedics apologising as they secure him.
“S’ not your fault… all good. Holy shit.” The pain loses its edge ever so slightly once he’s back on a flat surface, focusing on even breaths as best he can.
“Y/N, Halstead!” It’s Voight and the rest of your team, having secured the scene, jogging over to where they’re currently loading Jay into the back of the ambulance.
Hank comes to a stop by your side, a reassuring hand on your back.
“You alright? Is he okay?” Hank queries, Hailey’s coming to squeeze your shoulder. The rest of the team calls out reassurances and well wishes to Jay who feebly shows a weak thumbs up. Your body was thrumming with adrenaline, itching to climb into the ambulance with Jay and see him safely to Med. You turn back to Voight.
“I’m fine, he’s… he took two to his vest, no bleeders but the impact was intense. Suspected fracture or break on his ribs, they’re gonna check for internal bleeding too. He’s got oxygen to make breathing easier.”
Hank nods, “Okay, you get in that Ambo, we’ll come by once we’ve sorted this mess out.”
“Thank you, Sarge, I’ll keep you in the loop.” You smile thankfully and say your quick goodbyes to the rest of the unit. Hoisting yourself in the back of the Ambo you join Sylvie, and Jay who is watching you with half open eyes.
You reach forward, now your turn to stroke your thumb across the back of his hand, soothing a scratch he’d obtained from the fall. He flips his palm so it’s touching your palm, folding his own fingers into yours, squeezing gently. Your heart is skittering in your chest, the adrenaline is in full flow and you don’t know where to put it, your fondness for Jay had been put into stark clarity by watching his life be put in serious danger for yet another time.
“I’m… ‘kay… don’t worry.” Jay tries to reassure you through the oxygen mask, voice strained from the pain, vest now thankfully loosened to avoid adding additional pressure to his injuries.
[End of Flashback]
That was earlier, and now you’re in the break room where Will had let you be in peace whilst he went to chase up the progress on examining Jay.
The door opening makes you jump a good foot off the couch, you breathe out sharply as you finally let go of your vest. You look exhausted, the day finally catching up with you. Will holds his hands up, smiling sheepishly,
“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you… He’s fine, as good as you can be from an impact so close range. Definitely a rib fracture, lots of heavy bruising, he’ll need to rest and be on light duty for at least a month if not more. He was at risk for internal bleeding but they think that with sufficient caution he can avoid further complications.”
“If we can keep him still.” You muse, Will chuckles and nods.
“Yeah, if we can do that… You wanna see him and yell at him for being a dumbass? I’ve already had my turn.”
You try to hide your eagerness but you get up immediately, squeezing Will’s arm in thanks as you follow him to the bed they’ve put Jay in.
Jay’s propped up in bed, ribs and chest fully supported in a bandage as he is hooked up to the monitors and what you suspect are some decent painkillers, judging by his sleepy and spaced out expression. They’ve swapped the full mask for the nasal cannula. He smiles dopily when he sees you, eyes twinkling. Will smiles fondly at the scene, leaving to check on some other things whilst you have your moment.
“Hey, partner.” Jay hums, gesturing with his head to encourage you closer.
You step further into the room, coming to sit in the chair by his side.
“Hey… feeling better?” You watch him carefully, looking for any signs of discomfort or something the doctors could have missed, despite your confidence in them.
“Much, they’ve got me on the good stuff. And Will has already been mother-henning the shit out of me, so don’t worry, alright?”
Jay knows exactly what he’s doing when he disarms you with that smile of his, and your worried brow softens.
“Okay… I’ll try to worry less, but you scared the fuck out of me, Jay. So don’t do that again…” Your head drops, your emotions come surging back to the front of your mind and you can feel salty hot tears welling, cheeks pink from mild embarrassment.
“Y/N… Look at me.” You glance up and he’s smiling sympathetically, there’s a beat of just looking at each other and then…“Come here, baby.”
You look at the space that’s free next to him, and you think for a second you’ve fallen asleep in the break room and made this whole thing up. Jay Halstead, love of your life, had just called you “Baby”, and was now wanting you to sit in his hospital bed with him.
You’re frozen for a brief moment until you find yourself doing something very forward, you’re shimmying as best you can onto his bed, absolutely terrified of jostling him, but you manage it. And he sighs happily, letting his hand slip back into yours.
You’re caressing along his forearm, feeling the realness of him beneath your fingertips. He’s watching you with curious and adoring eyes… with a bite of your lip, you find the words you’ve needed to say for a while now.
“Jay… I’m just gonna say things, okay? And you can just listen… I know our job, I love our job, wouldn’t trade it for anything. And I know we get hurt, we put ourselves out there for good reason, but I can’t go through a day like today again… not without telling you that I’m so into you. It’s stupid and painful and it drives me crazy, but fuck, I love you. Totally cool if you don’t feel that way, or need time or-” You’re in full flow, rambling away letting your heart say its piece when Jay’s voice pulls you back into the room, his hand still firmly clasped in yours.
“Y/N…”
You swallow hard, scared to look into his eyes but you brave it all the same. “Yeah, Jay?”
“Can we kiss now?” His eyebrows are quizzical, that smile still on his face. You feel safe, secure. It’s a solid bet, you think, that he just might happen to feel the same.
“Yeah, yeah… I think we can….Does that mean you-”
You don’t get to finish your insecure question, he’s tugging at the badge around your neck, using the chain to pull you in, with as much energy as he can muster. You place your hand on his thigh as you lean in; both of you in dire need of a drink and some chapstick, the smell of gunpowder ever so faint, but it’s everything you’ve needed. Everything you’ve been craving.
Holding each other as best you can, leaning deeper into the kiss with a faint moan. Your gentle fingertips massaging the nape of his neck, heartbeat thundering under your chest.
“I knew it! I goddamn knew it! Kev, pay up.” The sound of Adam’s voice breaks you apart, both of you with rosy blushes as Jay flips Adam off half heartedly. You carefully shimmy back off the bed and stand by Jay’s side instead, not sure who to look at.
You clear your throat, “Hi guys, Sarge…”
Adam has a supremely smug look as Kevin slips him twenty dollars. Hailey is shaking her head but can’t help the smile at the two of you, Kim may or may not have been snapping a few photos before Adam interrupted. Even Hank is smiling slightly, arms folded as he leans against the doorway.
Hank nods at Jay, “How you feelin’ kid?”
“Sore, but uh, I’m good, Sarge. I’ll be alright soon enough.”
“I’m sure. But you do as they say, take the time you need.”
“I will. Thanks…”
One by one they each get a proper conversation with Jay, giving him small offerings of his favourite snacks and drinks.
“Here you are, Chuckles. Helps with the overnight stay.” Trudy hands him a sleep mask and earbuds, looking around the room with disdain like she could be forced to stay in her own hospital room at any moment.
“Thanks, Sarge. Appreciate it.”
They all say their farewells until it’s just Hank left.
“I know you’ve had this speech before Halstead, and Y/N I’m sure you know how I feel about relationships in my unit…”
“Sergeant, I… we-'' Hank holds up a shushing hand.
“It’s fine. Just keep doing your jobs the way you do them, keep it civil and professional, and we’ll be alright. I know I don’t have to tell you what will happen if I see signs of trouble. Whatever it is, make sure you handle it right, and we’re good.”
“You’ve got it, Sergeant.”
“That’ll be no problem, Sarge.”
“Good. I’ll come by at lunch tomorrow. Call me if you need anything.”
“See you tomorrow, Sergeant.”
“Thanks again, Sarge,”
Hank makes his usual acknowledging grunt before giving you both a farewell wave, meandering back out towards the exit.
There was silence, just the sounds of the hospital hubbub and Jay’s machines around you…
Jay clears his throat.
“So, uh…” Jay’s eyebrows are raised, teasing.
“Yeah… are we… something?” Your face is half smile and half pensive worry that he might change his mind.
“I really would like us to be something. And judging by your declaration of love earlier…” He grins, teasingly poking your side…
“You are such a dick.” You playfully swat his arm.
“Mhm, but apparently I’m your dick.” Fingertips dance across your skin, a gentle grip on your elbow brings you down to his face once more, you glance at his lips, now softer from some water and Kim’s offering of chapstick.
“Hm, yes. Yes, you are.” Closing the gap as you brush your lips against his, holding his face softly as you relax into his kiss, his hand is beautifully warm on your waist, a quiet grunt escapes Jay as moving his arm causes tension in his ribs…
A cough to get your attention yet again breaks you apart,
“This is not the rest that was prescribed to you.” A figure with folded arms, scrubs and a sly grin stands in the doorway.
Request: I just have to say… Im obsessed with everything you write!! could you do a jay halstead imagine where they are secretly dating and no one knows and the reader just shows up with a whole ass engagement ring and wedding band (she secretly got married with jay) and the unit is confused as they always thought the reader was single. Uo to you if they decides to tell them then and there or wait a few more weeks. Maybe they decide to do a bigger wedding for friends and family. Also maybe do a scene about the secret wedding (much like matt and gabby tried to do minus all of 51 showing up). Maybe just like sylvie and will as a witness since they’re the readers and jay’s best friend/brother?

You’d been sleeping when you heard a crash.
Your eyes snapped open at the same time that Jay sat up. You glanced at the baby monitor and looked back at Jay. He leaned over, pulling open the concealed compartment of his drawer which popped open and he grabbed his gun.
“Go get Sophia, and stay in there.” Jay whispered.
“Jay?”
Jay turned to look at you. “Don’t come out until I come and get you, alright? I’ll come to get you.”

You always had a thing for a man in a uniform. A cop uniform, a fireman uniform, a suit. So when you started dating Jay, you thought you would see him in his blues all the time but he told you he has a detective and he wore plain clothes and usually never wears the uniform. He only wore his blues on special occasions like a funeral of a fallen cop, or an award ceremony or even the unit is invite to an event with their mayor. You never told Jay about your uniform kink but you would think he would get it because you would jump at the chance to be with him after seeing him wear it.
You were walking into the bedroom that you shared with Jay and stopped in your tracts when you saw your boyfriend. He was wearing his blues but he had his pants undone and his shirt was unbuttoned, leaving his chest exposed. This sight made your breath hitched. Jay looked up at the mirror and saw you. He smiled and turned around to look at you. "Hey baby,"
You forced yourself to straighten up and walked into your bedroom and threw your stuff on the top of your dresser. "You wore your blues today?"
Jay walked to you and placed his hands on your hips. "Yeah, had to go to a ceremony thing today,"
He kissed your lips and your arms immediately grow around his neck and your hands go instinctively go into his hair and pull it which earns you a small groan from Jay. He pushed you against the dresser which earns him a small moan. It doesn't take much more for things things heat up.

Over the next few weeks, you see Jay more and more in his blues which is werid cause you don't ever see him leave the house wearing it, only when you come home. You walked into the house and saw he wasn't wearing his blues which makes you sad but it's whatever. "Hey handsome,"
He turned around and smiled. "Hi beautiful,"
"I have a question,"
"Yeah?"
"Why have you been wearing your blues a lot lately?"
He gives you his famous cocky grin. "Oh there's this certain woman that caught my eye that seems to love when I wear my blues,"
You felt anger raise up. "Oh, so you're doing it for another woman's attention? Makes sense since I never see you leave the house with it on but always when I come home. Who is she?"
Jay just laughs. "You're an idiot,"
"How am I the idiot? You're the one trying to impress another woman,"
This just makes Jay laugh even more. "I'm taking about you, dumbass,"
You felt your cheeks go red. "Oh,"
He walked over to you and lifted your chin with his thumb. "I've known about your feelings towards me in my blues since the beginning,"
"Why did you tell me."
"Because I thought you were cute getting frustrated when I wore them especially when I purposely left the shirt unbuttoned,"
You playfully pushed him back and punched him in the arm. "Dick,"
He rubbed his arm laughing.
"Did you wear your blues all these time just to get me flustered?"
"I mean that was a plus but no. There's been some stuff going on with the unit thats makes us required to wear the blues,"
"You could've warned me,"
"Or I could never wear my blues around you again,"
