Devotion✨
I’m sure you hear this a lot but every time you post photos of your furniture/apartment I’m like “damn, that’s my dream place!!”. Do you have any tips for finding such cool furniture without breaking the bank?
Mostly it's patience, Facebook marketplace, and local thrift stores. (Not antique stores--they're generally priced at what stuff is worth, and they're able to be patient until a buyer with the right budget comes about.)
And that means that you might be doing a lot of work driving somewhere, hauling furniture, and then driving a lot again. It also means passing on cool stuff that isn't in your budget. The great deals are always the ones that are the least convenient. Always. They're priced low because the seller wants them gone and doesn't want to deal with moving themselves. They're usually in smaller towns that aren't antique hotspots. This piece was two hours away from me and I roped some random motorcyclists into helping me load it into my van.
Personally I'm a fan of getting a budget, secondhand piece of furniture that's good enough for what you need for now, taking care of it, and then upgrading to something cooler when you find it. For example, the side by side is replacing a mediocre writing desk and this very heavy leaded glass hutch (which I moved out of the way yesterday by myself and let me tell you, not fun).
I'll be selling both the desk and hutch for essentially the same amount I paid for them. It's kind of like leasing furniture, really. I already recouped what I spent buying the side-by-side by selling a different china cabinet. All three of those furniture items are nice, and were individually less than $250 when I bought them. They're just less cool than the new thing!
So if you're wanting a good deal, you've got to be willing to go way out of your way, deal with the inconvenience, and be patient. Curating a weird home is a slow process that's never truly finished.
Should I be saving my money for a down payment on a house and getting rid of furniture so I have less to move? Yes. And also yes.
But consider:
She's $300 and I need her
She's here!!
This side-by-side was built by the Rockford Desk and Furniture Co., which only existed from 1891-1895. I've found one singular other example of this cabinet, which was auctioned over a decade ago, and was stained a dark cherry color. I personally like the color of the quartersawn oak as it is, so I'm not planning a full restoration.
Wait I just realized this puts her in line of sight with my favorite chifforobe and I love how they look together. Very different periods and styles but I feel like there's a dialogue there.
We are not judging the mess in my drawing room, that's a later problem. Work table all covered in nonsense...

Surrender to flesh and bones by Yan Lucas Migóne
maybe if i isolate myself enough my desire for intimacy will go away
how i see this post
When you meet Edward Elric he gives off the impression that he's the short-tempered hot-headed "violence is the answer to all life's questions" kind of protagonist, and it's in fact incredible character craft that he's actually the character who ends the series with a negative-3 kill count.
people killed: 0
direct orders of "you really really need to kill this guy" ignored: 1
ongoing murders being committed by Ed's own friends/colleagues that Ed got in the way of to specifically stop that murder from happening: 2
God's worst soldier Edward Elric. Showed up as the youngest member of the Amestrian army, took millions of dollars from them, never followed a single order, helped dismantle their fascist regime, left with a lower kill count than he arrived with, then fucked off to go be a house-husband. Character of all time.
You know, when you said "negative-3 kill count," I, who haven't seen the anime, thought, "He resurrected 3 people?????" But I'm seeing here on the wiki that apparently resurrection in this anime is a terrible idea.

when james baldwin said “you think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. it was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.” I felt that big, big time
sylvia told me good girls go to heaven
when i gave gerard my sketchbook to pick a drawing to take this was the runner up (after the pinup of himself riding a bomb)
explained to an 8 year old that once a fruit is ripe you only have so much time until it rots so you have to eat it soon and she said so i'll never be able to keep it perfect like this forever? no and there are about a million pieces of art for you unrelatedly
