As soon as his comment spilled out into the open her body stiffened. What heâd said taken her off guard, causing her mind to slip of itâs activity and go limp momentarily. How could he say that? How could they be certain that it was SAFE? Sheâd never wanted children, this was something she had known for many years. There was no way she could bring a child into such a BROKEN world unless she was positive that she could get them through it. They were still HAUNTED by the nightmares of their past, neither of them what they used to be. Katniss believed that it would be impossible for them to do a child justice.
â Why would you say that? We canât, Peeta. We canât be sure everything is okay now and it always will be. â
Her eyebrows furrowed as she turned to face him, an irritation rising as she did so. FEAR was a powerful thing that consumed her very being.
â I would be a TERRIBLE mother. I let my own sister d i e because I wasnât able to protect her and you think Iâd be a good MOTHER? â
He knew that the question caught her off guard, he knew her thoughts on children. They had indirectly talked about it many times before, he knew that the woman still believed that the world would do something to hurt them. They had been trained to believe these things. It had been years since the war, they had been safe and left alone to finally live their lives and Peeta knew that they would be okay.
Convincing Katniss and making sure that she wanted the children as well, would be the hardest part. He never wanted to pressure her into doing anything, he wanted to make sure that she would love their children just as much as he would. Growing up in a home where his mother hated him and would frequently bully him and make him feel worthless. He didn't want that to happen to his children. He wanted to believe that Katniss wouldn't do anything like his mother would but he knew that Katniss had been through a lot and she was still struggling with adapting to the new world.
He reached out his hand and gently took hers and gently pulled her towards the couch. He had wanted to have this conversation for a while now. He didn't say anything until he sat down and pulled her beside him. Once they were both sitting he took both of her hands in his and then began to talk softly.
"Katniss, it's been years since the war. The world is different, I see it every day our district is growing again. A young couple came in the bakery a couple months ago. They were new to 12 and they were celebrating because she was pregnant.
Last month they came in with their new born child and it got me thinking about what our children would maybe look like. Now that is all I can think about Katniss, I want to start a family with you because the world is a better place, a safe place now."
He bit his lip softly and moved his hand up to push a loose strand of hair out of her face and behind her ear. He knew that the woman sitting in front of him was broken, he was too. The nightmares still came to the pair of them, Katniss more so than Peeta but they were always there for each other. Her nightmares were worse than his, but he still had the occasional hijacked fit. They both were covered in the scars from the years of abuse. His soulmate never asked for these things to happen, she was just trying to save her sister. She ended up turning the world into a place were families could finally begin to strive again.
"The games are never coming back, I can promise you that they won't. The world is a different place now Katniss. Our children would never fear growing up. They would be surrounded in complete happiness and love. They wouldn't know anything about the reaping or the games until we decided to tell them."
He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it gently hoping that his words were getting through to her.
