Obviously Cape Opera has been away for a while... The regular show updates were getting too long-winded, and the schedule was too much to handle as well as work, so I mothballed it for a bit... I’m bringing it back soon with a less time-driven approach and a new style. For now, just enjoy another example of the golden age - the best fight scene from the fantastic Daredevil Season 2!
#CapeOpera: Legends Of Tomorrow, Episodes 3 & 4
My friend and fellow Legends fan Pete had some negative points to make about episode 3, and they are not without merit. Kendra, aka Hawkgirl, injured at the climax of episode 2, spends most of this one unconscious, occasionally blurting out convenient plot details. But hey, on the upside, no more you-know-who, except (please no) in flashbacks.
Flashback time! Another cold open. We’re in Egypt, the Ancient one, that looks like a stage set for a Canadian production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat. Vandal Savage is creeping about in the darkness, and guess who’s here to kill him... it’s Rip Hunter. With no backup. And just a stupid knife. Bad plan.
#CapeOpera: Arrow, Season 4, Episode 12
This week’s Arrow had the most badass opening of the season so far, featuring the return of one of the show’s best characters, Nyssa Al-Ghul, Daughter of the (original) Demon. This lethal, ass-kicking, globe-trotting assassin has been locked up in her father’s dungeon for quite some time, after helping Laurel Lance, aka Black Canary, use the Lazarus Pit to resurrect Sara Lance, aka White Canary... WITH TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES! Yep, Ra’s Al-Barrowman was pretty pissed at Nyssa when we last saw them together...
As Episode 12 opens, Talibah, a League of Assassins adept originally rescued and recruited by Nyssa and Sara, brings the Daughter of the Demon her dinner - a delicious stuffed pepper. It’s stuffed with... GASP! A ninja shank!
#CapeOpera: The Flash, Season 2, Episodes 10, 11 and 12
This week it’s been announced that Grant Gustin’s CW version of The Flash will be appearing on CBS’s Supergirl. The second-launched, but most-watched and fastest-growing CWVerse show has played the game so well, it has changed the playing field. The showrunners have pulled off something incredible - they made the DC Multiverse concept work on screen, and by doing so, they may have secured the CWVerse’s future.
As I mentioned in my first Green Arrow recap, the machinations of the DC Cinematic Universe looked very likely to rob us of more than just the CW versions of the Suicide Squad and Amanda Waller; with some rumours suggesting that the debut of Ezra Miller’s Flash, potentially happening in the forthcoming Batman Vs. Superman, could spell the end for Gustin, and the CW’s best show (well, at least until Legends of Tomorrow got going).
Now, according to DC superfan Kevin Smith at least, DC insider and story architect Geoff Johns has hinted at the possibility that a DC Multiverse at least conceptually linking the CWVerse with the grimdark, cinematic reality of the DC films is at least possible, or has been discussed at DC. The crossover with rival network CBS’s critically-admired, but ratings-flailing Supergirl show is the first glimmer of that possibility becoming real. Whether The Flash appears in the CBS show, bringing Kara’s adventures into the notional CWVerse, or whether he visits an alternate timeline or parallel reality in which she exists is immaterial - the conceptual barrier has been broken.
The multiverse is real.
In theory, there is no reason that Miller and Gustin’s versions of the Scarlet Speedster can’t coexist - but it is significant that it is the CW show, not the multi-billion dollar Snyder movies, which offer proof of concept. The runaway success of The Flash on TV means, I hope at least, that its cancellation is unlikely now - and even opens up the possibility of a direct nod from the DCCU in future movies. With the multiverse, everything is not merely possible - it MUST exist. That’s just how it works.

#CapeOpera: Legends Of Tomorrow, Season 1, Episode 2
Once again, Legends of Tomorrow has delivered a triumphant episode. We’re only 2 eps in, and already the show is finding its feet with fast-paced, quick-witted dialogue and kick-ass fight scenes. You haven’t watched yet? GO WATCH IT!! You just want the recap? OK! Here’s how it went down in episode 2!
After running from Chronos at the end of episode 1, the team have tracked Vandal Savage to 1970s Norway, where some kind of big black market arms shindig is about to go down. First, Rip Hunter has to deal with some moaning from the Hawkfolk, who obviously are quite keen to go back in time and prevent their “son” (the old professor guy from episode 1 - yay, time travel!) from dying. Hunter quickly explains that you can’t cross your own timeline without screwing up history - unless you are, like him, a badass Time Master. It’s good they explained the whole “temporal vortex” concept, because that’s what’s going to happen in this episode - the timeline is about to get pretty majorly dicked with.
Props to White Canary for the show’s first “SPEAK ENGLISH, SCIENCE GUY” moment, with her classic opening line: “Forgetting about physics for a second...” Or, y’know, 45 minutes. Or even the whole series? TIMEY WIMEY STUFF, right? Good enough, carry on.
Captain Cold and Heatwave are, of course, the natural choices to take point on the whole arms dealing mission: “Arms dealers and terrorists aren’t exactly our kind of people,” quips Cold, “but they’re the next best thing.” The BEST thing, obviously, being every single line of dialogue Wentworth Miller utters.
#CapeOpera: Arrow, Season 4, Episodes 10 & 11
THIS WEEK: THE RETURN OF GOTHLICITY!
Two episodes in to the second half of Arrow’s fourth season, and the groundwork has already been laid - this season is about magic, it’s about identity, and it’s about the lure of power.
Terminally emo ninja rich kid Ollie is campaigning to be mayor, while behind the scenes, Team Arrow works to defeat the villainous Damian Dahrk (expertly played by Neil McDonagh), a man whose creepy occult powers and army of brainwashed, tooled-up followers known as H.I.V.E. (also called the ‘Ghosts’ for some reason, maybe I missed something) immediately make him a bigger threat than Malcolm Merlyn and Deathstroke combined.
H.I.V.E., by the way, stands for Hierarchy of International Vengeance and Extermination, which is nearly as cool as V.E.N.O.M. - the Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem, whom we will get to see in the proposed M.A.S.K. / G.I. Joe / Micronauts / My Little Pony shared cinematic universe. But enough about Hollywood... this is the CWVerse!
#CapeOpera: Doctor Hunter
A little visual preview of an upcoming #headcanon / #fantheory I have on the go about Rip Hunter / The Tenth Doctor...
#CapeOpera: Legends Of Tomorrow, Season 1, Episode 1
Lets kick off this little intro to Legends of Tomorrow (Season 1) with a little squuueeeee from yours truly about just how much I love The CWVerse.
Face it - everything the Nolan movies and Zack Snyder got wrong, The CW shows get right. From the colour palettes, which abound in bright hues and colourful explosions rather than grim and gritty, smoke and rain-filled neo-noir shots, to the snappy, post-Whedon dialogue, nearly everything is note perfect. This is COMICS, people! Definitely the closest we’ve ever managed to get on TV to the sheer thrill of what Warren Ellis called Underwear Pervert stories.
Welcome to Cape Opera
Hi! My name’s Bram.
I was a journalist when that was a viable thing, now I am a freelance editor and occasional writer/performer of weird niche little things (more info here).
I have always loved superheroes, as long as I can remember. Right now, we are living in the golden age of superhero TV. True, a lot of it is nonsensical, ridiculous, and outright silly - but it’s a dream come true for me, with a superhero-based show on most days of the week.
I love it. This is the dream of my 14 year-old self come true, and for a while now, I’ve been thinking about writing a blog on these shows. Cape Opera is a new idea I am trying out, to get me back into the swing of writing regularly. The plan is to recap all of the shows I watch (i.e., all the shows) involving superheroes, and maybe even a few SF / Fantasy shows into the bargain. I watch a *ton* of this stuff, and I feel like I should be using that downtime / relaxation / guilty pleasure for some kind of practical purpose. Hence, recaps.
The inspiration for this blog was most definitely the insanely funny io9.com recaps by the likes of Charlie Jane Anders, Germain Lussier and others - they seem to have been phased out since io9 and Gizmodo amalgamated. I miss ‘em, so I’m gonna write ‘em! I hope you enjoy following along. First up, I’m going to recap what’s happened so far on the new seasons of The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, which will serve as an intro to weekly recaps of all three shows. Then I have a post planned about Supergirl (leading into regular recaps), and eventually I’ll dive into Agent Carter, Agents of SHIELD, and some of last year’s Marvel / Netflix shows. And then there’s Gotham.... ah yes, Gotham (or as I like to call it sometimes, in honour of its craziness, ‘Batshit’). Once The Walking Dead comes back, I’ll cover that too. If I have enough time, I’ll get into stuff like The Shannara Chronicles, The Magicians, The Expanse, The X-Files, Penny Dreadful, The Strain, American Horror Story, Doctor Who and all the other stuff I watch. Thanks for following!
