If the can't deny it, they will make up bullshit to ensure what happened in the narrative is twisted from what we have been told. For example, Kate Mitchell, who wrote Vriska's Pesterquest route, claimed that Tavros was the CHASER and it was HIM who was the sexual harasser in the original webcomic, not Vriska. And because of her working under Andrew Hussie, even after she was kicked out from WhatPumpkin, people consider her writing and Pesterquest as CANON and Tavros being a "creep" is why Vriska is a lesbian. It's about as stupid as the gender arc for Eridan when people forget he's a racist, privileged rich asshole who takes the same kind of advantage of his comfy lifestyle like Vriska, Equius, and Feferi.

I think what ppl forget abt Homestuck is that they’re all literally children. 13-17 if I remember correctly. Yeah they allll fucked up but don’t pretend you were some preteen saint at 13. It’s just that their level of fucked up was super high cause of their very specific situation. To me at least every character from the original 16 are completely redeemable. Even Eridan and his racism, he’s a kid that’s all he’s been taught for his entire life. And I don’t think anyone’s made the comic where they all grow up and learn from their actions and become stable members of society cause that’s boring asf.

As for headcanons disrupting the conversations around actual characters, I think you’re right to a degree, but it’s only cause the ppl you’re talking about are kids. I’d say a majority of the fandom are currently under 18. I’m talking online talking abt homestuck like we are now with Homestuck pfp’s. Since the majority of us are kids as well, that means they can empathize with the characters as if they were their friends. It’s normal for kids and teens to get attached to characters and want to see more of themselves in them, and thus headcanons.

So kids can be selfish, kids become attached to characters, kids want to see more of themselves in said characters, and so they headcanon them into oblivion, so much so it distracts them from who the character really is. I can vouch for all of this i absolutely was one of those kids.

What I’m saying is that we should be kinder to people and let them enjoy things. I know some ppl wanna be in an “intellectual space” with ppl who are “real fans” and really “know the characters” and you can, we are doing just that right now, but let people enjoy things. There’s so much bullshit in the world rn and you’re just adding to the venom by being a stickler for fictional characters.

You can have “intellectual conversations” about fictional characters all you want but don’t be a dick about it.

I just wish said younger fans would also be kinder not only to older fans, but to others as well if they disagree with certain opinions. I'm saying this as fandom culture in general since people would backstab another quickly without remorse. And yeah, kids can be selfish and be attached and project onto the characters. But there is a point to also the acknowledgement that the characters' lives are different from their own. Fiction is separate from reality. Not everything from the real world has to apply to writing, music, art, etc. I also don't think characters learning from their actions is boring. That's the whole point of character growth and arc. To learn and become better than what you were. Characters that struggle and learn the right things, gives people hope for the readers/audience to do better in the real world. It's encouraging. Especially if it is with characters who did not get a chance like others have to grow as individuals. Series like Homestuck didn't start as tragic or jaded. It started as funny and action packed. If the series was gothic in tone and genre, I would give it a pass about how bad things keep happening. But even then, that is too played for laughs that it is hard to take seriously. Too much nihilism and suffering as well can be repetitive and boring to go through that makes people even more bitter.

I agree, there is some degree of separation some of these kids need to work on but they’ll learn with time. I’ve found that kids like to use fictional characters to figure out who they are as they get older. Why do you think they’re so obsessed with the concept of “kining”.

That one off statement didn’t really mean much but I do understand what you’re saying, I did read the dang webcomic after all. It was a joke really but I just meant that, with this particular set of characters it’s not quite the vibe of the story for idk Gamzee to suddenly switch up, wanna go to therapy, and get his degree. Though that would make for a somewhat interesting story, it’s not the vibe Homestuck brings to the table.

Where most stories start and end coherently like a friendly get together, Homestuck comes in swinging with shocking dialogue, flashy visuals, and complex characters, like if a rave were a story.

If Hearts Boxcars could eat Eggs without struggle, than Gamzee going to therapy and getting a PHD would not be a stretch and could work if executed right. He'll probably get it much easier and faster than Rose. It's better than the bullshit that Epilogues had done with him as 'redemption'. I don't think it is right to compare Homestuck to a rave. In raves, people actually like the music that it gives people pumped up and excited as they dance with the flashy neon colored lights. It may have that in the early acts, but later on, people would bitch about the flashing lights giving seizures to others that they make them shut it off and request the DJ to only play lofi daycore music. Modern Homestuck fandom is basically that. Not even people that are working in the projects like Beyond Canon, can carry that same feeling despite all their claims of trying to revive that spirit back.

A rave that everyone got upset with and turned into something entirely different…I think that’s a fair enough assessment. Now that I think about it any of the characters having a therapy arc would be better than most of what I read of the epilogues(I didn’t finish it).

Truly I don’t think there’s any situation the Homestuck creatives couldn’t get at least a somewhat decent story out of. Just based on what they’ve done with what they had, they’re creative people. But I doubt that most people would want to see a Gamzee mental stability arc cause that’s not how he’s seen and it’d be a big change in the fundamentals of the character. They never set him up to be a guy that gets better and is liked for it.

It’s like if the Joker got better. Wtf is he now? Just some guy with a fucked up face and no name.

And the original spirit of Homestuck I don’t think can be replicated by anyone today. Partially because of how people speak today especially the kids. I can’t imagine a gen alpha homestuck cause the kids don’t say shit like “shut the fuck up you r*tarded f*ggot!” anymore, not that I’m complaining. Instead it’s like “shut up beta. You’re not skibidi enough to talk to me.” I have a gen alpha sibling trust me, i literally quoted her for that.

That along with the pop culture and technology references, shit like hawk tuah girl and Sabrina Carpenter showing up in your webcomic would just be more cringe than anything today. Basically can’t revive the spirit of Homestuck cause the world is much different than how it was back then. We are much more tasteful than we were at least on the internet.

Maybe I didn't write it correctly. It's more that the people who attended the rave for so long, start to hate that it WAS a rave and they force the change so it becomes something not like it and they are still content to say they are still going to a rave, when it isn't. That's the situation by the time we have modern Homestuck in this case. But I do agree because of the times changing and culture on the Internet, it would be hard to replicate on Homestuck and even trying to bring that to new audiences who did not live through it or understand how certain things were accepted at the time. Other mediums had a better execution because of other factors such as the limitations they were set in, the story and characters that lead to the conclusion, accessibility, and more that I probably couldn't think of. Homestuck does not have any of these and that is the reason why it never can be culturally impactful compare to series like Star Wars, Homestar Runner, Undertale, indie animations, and other future works that will come along the way that will have more history and memory for others to jump in. Any legacy that Homestuck will achieve will likely be overshadowed by other works such as Friday Night Funkin. With enough memory hole, it will get others to believe something else did it first before Homestuck.

I think while it can’t be replicated, it definitely holds cultural significance. Mostly because it’s a story that doesn’t hold its self to any limitations. Quite literally anything could happen. That and the fandom have solidified Homestuck into the general internets psyche. You could make a Homestuck reference to anything and someone around will understand it. (Sharpie bath, gray body paint, spit bucket, candy corn etc,) there’s a Homestuck reference to be made about just about everything, and someone will understand it.
