iâve been saying this to myself this morning and iâm going to say it to you in case you need to hear it: you are not here to be physically attractive. that is not your purpose. you are here to learn new things and be kind to people and listen to your favorite music and pet cute dogs and read big books and drink good coffee. you are here to see beauty in the world and create it when you canât find any. you are not here to impress people with how you look.
âIâm not the person you left behind anymore. Thereâs no one here to miss.â

How To Write a University-Level Essay in 9 Steps
I use this every time I write an essay! It helps me a lot, and since I started using it I havenât gotten lower than an A on any of my papers! (minus one lol)
First things first, every prof and every teacher expects a different thing. The essay Iâm using as an example is from my first year class and was around 1600 words â so not very long. Itâs also not a research essay. The prof called it an exegetical essay, but donât get it mixed up with Bible Exegesis. We studied the Odyssey and the Iliad for the semester and had to write on them and explain them. Despite this! The form of an outline will help literally every kind of essay.Â
SO this isnât exactly a how-to-write-an-essay post, but instead its more like how to make sure your essay is bomb as fuck. My first year prof forced us to do an outline for all of our essays (yes forced, we automatically failed if we didnât hand it in along with our essays). At first it was annoying, Iâm not going to lie, but once you get used to it, this sort of outline literally saves your life. What I like to do is make sure itâs detailed enough that all I need to do is erase all the spaces between the points, and explain my ideas a little bit more. To give an idea of how much I actually write after this, this outline is 900 words, and my final essay was 1600. It makes writing your essay go by a LOT faster, and makes sure you can easily see all your points laid out in front of you.
1. Find out what your topic is and what you want your thesis to generally be. I never write my thesis out right away, because when I write outlines I tend to change my mind on things a lot as I discover new topics. So I start out general and get more detailed later on.Â
2. Write out your main points. In this essay I was explaining how Odysseusâ encounter with the Cyclops was the first step in a many step process to make him a stronger and more intelligent man so that he would be able to fight off the suiters when he arrived in Ithaca. Each of my main points is the part in the book that has to do with this idea. My main points are: Odysseus tells Alcinous the story of him and a cyclops, after the Trojan war. // After escaping, they set sail again and reach the land of the Cyclops // Odysseus comes to the realization that the Cyclops is not human, and therefore he cannot reason with the Cyclops as a human. At first glance none of these points have Anything to do with my thesis, but I chose parts in the book that show Odysseusâ growth. I go on to explain my ideas within each of the points. Another thing to help you is to make sure each of these can read like a sentence. So you should be able to read Point 1 2 and 3 consecutively and have it flow well. It will help you when you write your good copy.
3. Once you have your main points, create what I call âsub-pointsâ in each of the main points. The number varies, as you can see in my example, but use as many as you need to make your point clear. When I was writing essays about Homer I usually stuck to explaining Odysseusâ actions, or the actions of other characters in this section. This year when I was writing philosophy papers I used this part to fully explain each of the ideas in my own words. Also you may be noticing a (P) beside some of the points, this is what Iâve sectioned off to be a paragraph. As you may notice the âmain pointâ doesnât have a P beside it; it is its own paragraph, but I use those as transition paragraphs to help my paper flow and to show the reader what Iâm going to be talking about. Itâs a grounding point. I usually opted for shorter paragraphs when writing about Homer because I broke things up by event; when writing philosophy papers my paragraphs are usually much longer. These points should tie back into your main idea for you paper. Each point should tie back into the one above it to create a nice flow, this will help orientate your reader but also make it a lot easier for you to write.Â
4.Now is the time to explain each sub point. Explain why the point was important enough to be in your paper; I often chose to explain how it changed Odysseusâ actions or actions that he chose to do. I usually use this section as an opportunity to clarify my points and to look back at the section Iâve put the sub-point in to make sure it fits. It around this time that I switch things around
5. Give any further explanation you may need. Sometimes I find that I need to explain things just a little bit more. Or if Iâm not 100% sure on my point yet, I use this section to write down my explanation rather than waiting to write it when I write my good copy.
6.After this I write my thesis out. I know this may seem like a late point in the essay to write a thesis, but like I said I find waiting helps me really settle down with what I want to get across. I tend to have a hard time finding my thesis before Iâve written out all my points
7.Then I write my Introduction and Conclusion. I donât write these in the broken down way that I do for the rest of my essay. I write them in full to help ground myself
8. Finally, I delete all of the points and spaces to create a solid paragraph. I do it point by point to make sure each sentence is a complete sentence, and then make sure I add on any explanation or detail that may be missing. Once thats done I usually have a solid essay with just some missing âgapsâ. I.e. I need to further explain my point. So I go in and fill in the gaps, add my explanations to tie it back into the thesis completely, and then I move onto the next paragraph. The third picture shows my sentences in my actual essay that I directly pulled from my outline (highlighted to match the outline), while the sentences that arenât highlighted were the sentences written to fill in the gaps.
9. Once thatâs all done I send my essay to a friend and we face time while she edits mine. She reads it out loud to me and we stop when something sounds funny (and then we switch and I do the same for her). IÂ high recommend peer-editing and making sure you read it out loud! Its how I catch 90% of my mistakes.Â
And thatâs it! Keep in mind that you should be gathering quotes, sources, or whatever BEFORE you write your outline, and it helps A LOT if you write in the sources in your outline so that you know where to put it in your essay!
everyday.

Being burnt out means youâre probably feeling exhausted, unmotivated, unfocused and just generally âbleghâ - an absolute nightmare when youâre trying to stay on track with school and studying. Iâve suffered from academic burn out a lot but itâs now something I know how to cope with, Iâve compiled my best tips and tricks for dealing with a burn out and how to ease yourself back into your studying!
Okay, so youâve been called smart all your life. As a kid, you were one of the smartest in your class. Maybe you could read at a much higher level than your peers, or you could fly through multiplication drills like they were nothing. Then, you get to high school and suddenly youâre surrounded by lots of people who were âgifted kidsâ. None of what made you âspecialâ seems all that important now. Your work is actually challenging, and itâs actually requiring effort.
If youâre experiencing this, just know that so many students have gone through the same thing. Maybe it happens in high school, maybe college. But a lot of us who were considered gifted as kids suddenly run into this and it challenges our entire identity. It can be paralyzing, but itâs 100% possible to overcome it and succeed! Iâve compiled a few tips for ex-gifted kids dealing with impostor syndrome and self-doubt. Iâm not a therapist, psychologist, or any sort of education expert. Iâm just speaking to my own experiences, and I welcome any input from others who have insight into this as well!
1. Understand that working hard does not mean you arenât intelligent. If something doesnât come naturally to you, thatâs not a reason to give up. Believing that people can do things âjust because they were born with a talent for itâ is only going to hurt you. Itâs not true! People may have natural aptitudes for things, but hard work is involved even for the smartest or most talented people. You are capable of learning anything, and you donât have to be âgood at itâ right away to do so.
2. Comparison will kill you. You are your only competition. Focusing on how you rank with other students, and comparing yourself to your classmates is going to exhaust you. By focusing on others, you canât put your full energy into focusing on your work and yourself. You belong. Even if you struggle with your work, you belong. Focus on your own self-improvement and doing your best.
3. Donât focus on the goal, focus on your current actions. If youâre always thinking about the future, and about whether youâll get into that school or that program or win that award or get that scholarship, youâre not using that time to get work done. Donât worry about college applications, just do your homework. Focus on what you are doing now to reach your goals so you can apply to schools with confidence later.
4. Your grades may not reflect intelligence, but they do reflect work ethic. Donât let others convince you that grades mean nothing. They sure as hell mean a lot to colleges, and thinking that you should âreject the current education systemâ is not going to harm anyone but yourself. If you donât feel like youâre learning anything in your high school classes, thatâs all the more reason to want to get into a university that will challenge you. If you put effort into your work, it will not let you down. Your hard work will be reflected on your transcript. Donât lose focus.
5. Talk to someone. Let people know if youâre struggling. It can be hard to feel like you arenât allowed to identify as âsmartâ or to feel pressure to constantly compete and improve. I went to a highly competitive high school that pushed kids to cope in dangerous ways. This is not healthy and not okay. If youâre feeling overwhelmed you need to find healthy coping mechanisms. Speak with someone you trust and donât let yourself spiral. Donât try to self medicate. Your well being is always more important than your grades. Period.
6. Enjoy yourself. School may seem like hell, and you may feel like it will never end and youâll always be stressed and worried. But high school is only four years, and you can do things during that time that you probably wonât ever again. Take advantage of things that seem fun, even if people think theyâre nerdy or weird. Try and remind yourself that youâre lucky to have your education and you have the power to do great things with it. Donât lose sight of your own ability and your bright future!
HOW TO STUDY IN THE MORNING
Waking up to study in the morning can be a chore, and if youâre not a morning person, you feel the struggle a lot more. While I personally recommend adapting to your bodyâs schedule, some feel working in the morning helps them feel more productive!
THE NIGHT BEFORE
Take out your study materials - textbooks, pencil case, laptop etc and put them on your desk. Donât leave anything distracting on your desk!
Prepare a glass of cold water - or a mug of tea or coffee and set it on your desk so you donât have to get it the next morning.
Write a to-do list to make sure you donât miss anything you may need to do.
Get an early night! If youâre waking up early, you still need to sleep and get all the rest you need!
WAKING UP
Set your alarm and leave it on the other side of your room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off!
Bonus if you set your alarm to something really loud and annoying
If need be set multiple alarms or ask somebody to wake you up
GETTING THINGS DONE
Wait before having breakfast! Remember those study materials on your desk? Work for 15-20 minutes then eat breakfast. If you eat breakfast first, youâre more likely to procrastinate and forget about your work
Drink those liquids! The water or coffee you left out? Drink it now to wake yourself up!
Get a blanket / some fluffy socks / a warm jumper. This will stop you from going back to your warm bed.
Stay away from the internet. Use apps like forest or turn off your phone and hide it so you canât see it.
Stick to your to-do list and tick off completed tasks.
Discipline yourself! Sometimes you have to stare at your desk and argue with yourself about how you need to study. Itâs okay if you do this!!
It can be that you try all this and you still canât bring yourself to study in the morning - thatâs okay! Maybe your body is more suited to studying in afternoons or evenings! Learn your bodyâs schedule!
