I think I just realized why Maomao hits the spot for me, and it's bc she's an awkwards weirdo, and nobody cares. She is neither infantilized nor vilified for her social incompetence, and while some characters find it endearing, it's never so over the top that it feels insulting. She's living her best little weirdo life and all the people around her love and accept her for who she us. Her awkwardness is not used for drama or needless angst, and the comedic moments around it are never at her expense. Jinshi doesn't like her despite her strangeness, but because of it. Some people find her scary, mostly because she wanrs them to, but nobody thinks of her as cold or emotionless or robotic. All her friends know how kind she is and how much she cares, and it doesn't bother them that she expresses it differently. Everyone around her is just so loving and supportive, and that's just so fucking refreshing to see in a medium full of asshole geniouses. I just really love Maomao. She's the best.
