The Abbot of Glastonbury had a large estate on this site in the 14th century, and this kitchen is one of the best preserved #medieval kitchens in all of Europe. After walking through the Great Church, which is now, more or less, an open field, one would arrive here. The entrance to King Arthur’s tomb, in front of the High Altar, where the supposed bodies of Arthur and Guinevere were placed, after they were exhumed. The room is said to have been incredibly ornate and heavily decorated with gold. Finally moving into the second half of Day 2 of my #europe trip! We left #wells to visit the breathtaking ruins of #glastonbury #abbey. The abbey was a monastery dating back to the 7th century and is steeped in history, legend, and lore. It is attached to the #legend of #kingarthur and the holy grail, due to the discovery of a tomb believed to contain the remains of King Arthur and Guinevere. There are also Christian legends that say the Abbey was founded by Joseph of Arimathea in the first century. The Abbey was conquered several times over, destroyed by fire, rebuilt, expanded upon, then ultimately fell prey to the Dissolution of the Monastaries in 1539. I’m interrupting the chronology of my trip to Europe to write about how saddened, devastated, gutted, and shocked I am. The second leg of my trip to Europe was Paris, where I fell in love with this city that cannot be described. Only experienced. This isn’t even my favorite photo of Notre Dame, but I’m choosing it to post on this occasion because of the pristine golden light, shining on it, that seems to last twice as long in France as it does anywhere else. I’d really like to move on from #wells. I don’t have anything against the city at all; quite the opposite. I have around 8,000 photos from this trip and so many wonderful sights to share and talk about. I just can’t seem to get over the #beauty of this #cathedral and the #charm of the city.
