don't think about them overhearing ted telling karen that she needs him and so do the kids, that she wouldn't be able to take care of them or even herself if she didn't have him and his wealth to rely on. don't think about karen bursting into tears and collapsing in ted's arms because she knows that it's true, knows that there's no escaping this situation. don't think about karen sobbing uncontrollably, unaware that her kids are awake and that they can hear everything, and ted halfheartedly patting her on the back while not doing much to actually comfort her, but karen takes what she can get.

don't think about mike looking up at his sister, wide-eyed and confused, and asking her: "why is she crying? is it that time of the month again?", not even knowing what 'that time of the month' means but simply parroting his father because that's all he knows to do.

don't think about nancy thinking back to when she walked in on karen and joyce in the living room the other day, hugging each other tightly with tears in both of their eyes, and whispering: "i think it's the pregnancy hormones" because that was karen's response when nancy asked her why she was crying.
