It took a while. Cloudbase made most of the journey to the mid Pacific, and it was infuriating. But if either Scarlet or Black needed extraction, cloudbase needed to be close.
Once Cloudbase was within 2000 miles, Rhapsody was out, jet screaming towards the south Pacific.
It took about 40 minutes before she called through.
" @scramjettracy this is Angel 1, requesting permission to land."
“Permission granted, Angel 1. Taxi towards the cliff face and I’ll come meet you.”
Having left the decision of who could eat what to the doctor in charge, Scott exchanged a nod with Paul whose eyes had brightened some at the sound of the voice on his comm, left Gordon bonding with the kittens and a clearly besotted Conrad and hurried past the big green bird’s empty platform to active the manual controls for the hangar entrance.
Despite the situation he couldn’t help crack a grin at the sleek Interceptor craft rolling towards him. Best test pilot gig he’d had in a long time, that one and none of them had any idea of his involvement. Probably best it stayed that way.
Now to meet the infamous Rhapsody.
Meanwhile, down in the Island's sickbay, Paul's been listening to and watching Conrad with growing concern. "Hey." The call is soft, but firm. "All this?" He makes a gesture that encompasses the room. "Worth it. We have you back."
Conrad kept his eyes on his kittens and Gordon, but saw Paul's gesture with his peripheral vision.
"You may be the only one in Spectrum who feels that way," Conrad chuckled sadly, "I beginning to think I should have just stayed in the cabin with the furballs."
The eyebrow could be felt across the room.
"Conrad, when I passed on that you were free, the doc was halfway to the hangars before I finished talking, Mags just about teleported to the lounge so we could knock together a plan, and Rhapsody was in her Interceptor without asking twice. I will lay money that the Old Man is right now wearing a hole in the carpet pacing." He looks to Fawn. "Your second opinion?" @spectrumsoverworkedcmo
"Other than that Blue, Ochre, Grey, Green, and the rest of the Angels are probably planning a HALO drop the second the Colonel's back is turned?" Fawn shrugged. "I'm not taking that bet, by the way. I guarantee he's through the carpet and well on the way of endangering the structural integrity of Cloudbase's hull."
He turned back to Black. "Full disclosure? It was never a big secret that you disliked me. And that's fine. Better than fine, actually. But if you've ever thought that I would EVER make that a consideration in my triage decision-making?" Fawn shook his head. "You got me wrong seven ways to Sunday."
He pointed at Scarlet. "He went from fine, to zap, to not conscious. You, I had an observed steady trajectory of not fine. You both got the same initial treatment, but he had a head start on the diagnostics. Yours are shit, if you're interested. And don't think I haven't noticed you're avoiding my other question."
Conrad rested back against the diagnostic bed, almost grateful that the damage to his face mostly hid his reactions.
'This is why my personal relationships fail,' he thought, 'I have no clue how to relate to people. I've never disliked Fawn, and his belief about my thoughts on his triage was not what I thinking at all. Oh well, let's just make another check in the Conrad fails being a human file and keep going.'
“I've told you all I know, Dr. Fawn,” he said evenly, “there have been times I have been injured, and lacking access to human medical intervention, the Mysterons simply retro-metabolised the injured/damaged/destroyed body parts. I have no idea why my heart is 'corroding' as you say.”
He looked at Paul guiltily; Conrad hadn't meant to drop that particularly unpleasant bomb on him.
'Another bit of proof my emotional control is shot,' he shook his head, then said:
“There were times the Mysterons' plans required me to be captured. The capturing parties...were interested in whatever intelligence that they could get from me, be it about the Mysterons or Spectrum. Since it appeared I had been all but declared non-human, they took it that human rights didn't apply to me,” he swallowed, and pushed down memories that would do him no good to allow to surface, “I can't say that I blame some them. When you're looking at potential alien extinction of the human race, any action taken to ensure survival can be considered reasonable.”
"That's over with now," Scarlet says as firmly as he can, "and you're coming back to Cloudbase, you and the kittens." The 'so that we can protect you' is all but written in neon lights. "Doc, can you fix or stabilise the corrosion?"
The door to the medbay opens and the sound of clicking boots on the hard floor stop echoing as Rhapsody steps into the room. And she only has eyes for one person.
"Hi Paul."
"Dianne..." his voice cracks and it's very clear that it was a very, very fragile mask he was putting over things, to pretend he was holding himself together and not on the verge of falling apart, and right now he absolutely does not care that there's an audience for this. He reaches out to her with the arm that doesn't have an IV in it.
She's already across the medbay before he finishes saying her name.
Dianne immediately takes his hand and steps close, her other hand coming up to his cheek. Oh he looks terrible...
She keeps her voice low. "It's ok..."
Paul sits up and pulls her into a tight hug, hiding his face in the crook of her neck and clinging to her like she's the only thing keeping him together. "They almost... they almost..." he stops, his throat too tight to force out any more words.
Dianne cradles him, her movements slow and soothing, like she’s trying to anchor him back to himself. "It's alright... It's alright. You don't have to say anything now if you don't want to. I'm here."

Now to meet the infamous Rhapsody.
She activates the VTOL thrusters and makes easy use of the short runway. Rhapsody takes a moment to finally take her helmet off and quite unceremoniously ruffles her hair to get some feeling back in her skull. She sighs before unbuckling her harness and flicks the release for the canopy.
She hops back onto the intake and stands for a moment, appreciating the tropical surroundings as she waits for Scott.
Scott couldn’t help a grin as he emerged from the opening cliff face and observed the pilot standing on top of her aircraft. It takes one to know one and Paul really had found himself a thoroughbred flygirl there.
Don’t for heaven’s sake look like you’re flirting, Tracy. Keep control of your face. If you accidentally wink she’ll leave very little of you left for Paul to murder.
“Hey there, welcome to Tracy Island. I wish it was under better circumstances. Paul’s awake and inside - D’ya wanna scoot your interceptor into the hangar here first though? She’s far too pretty to risk my brother’s big green brick landing on her when he gets back.”
Rhapsody turns to look at Scott, hand on her hip. "I would appreciate your brother not crushing my jet... Where do you want me to taxi her?"
Scott turned and beckoned over his shoulder for her to follow as he strode across the hangar towards the currently empty repair bay. The li’l jet should tuck in there nicely with plenty of room for Virg to manoeuvre the bus when he returned.
He indicated the location with a nod and just a little jazz hands. Which he then clamped behind his back in much safer parade rest.
Rhapsody swung herself elegantly out and Scott found himself looking longingly at the empty cockpit. Maybe if he was really REALLY hospitable she might let him… reminisce a li’l.
A polite cough brought him back to reality and the fact that he had this woman’s half liquidised boyfriend in the medbay…
Better not use that exact phrasing.
“You’re both very welcome. I’ll take you to Paul and… the others. I’m Scott, by the way.”
Rhapsody notes the longing glance, causing her to squint for a flash of a second. She goes to follow Scott. "How is he?"
She tries to sound officious, maybe even a little ornery. It didn't work; the worry in her voice comes through like a klaxon.
“He’s…” Scott hesitated. “Perhaps you need to ask your medic about that. Our med scanners completely freaked out… but I guess you’re used to that. His readings were improving though.”
He paused again and watched her try and fail to conceal the emotions flickering across her face. Should he say anymore? Was it a breach, something Paul betrayed in a moment of weakness and wouldn’t have wanted Scott to have seen. But this was his partner - if anyone should be forewarned it was she.
“Uh… between us I suspect he might be putting a brave face on things but he seemed kinda… upset… shellshocked perhaps? When he arrived. The sort of upset you can tell a guy isn’t used to feeling, if that makes sense? I don’t know the half of what you guys see on the regular but I think maybe whatever happened before he got here wasn’t regular even for you.”
She can't help it. Hours of keeping it together, not being able to get here sooner... Her entire visage falls, shoulders dropping. "Shell shocked...?"
Scott did not expect a single one of the events that had occurred today. His strangest dreams wouldn’t even have come close. But never in a million years would he have even conceptualised trying to comfort a Rhapsody Angel - possibly the only person he was aware of, by reputation at least, that might be more terrifying that either Lady Penelope or Kayo, perhaps even Grandma - who looked almost on the brink of tears.
“I’m so sorry. Maybe I shouldn’t have said, I might have got it wrong? That could just be how he looks when he comes back but uh… I just thought you oughta know in case… you need to.”
No... she can't jump several bridges ahead before even crossing the first. She will assess the situation herself when she sees him.
She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath and looks directly at Scott. "Let's not waste any more time."

I'm free.
Where are you?
Somewhere in Canada, I think, I'm going to need to check as to exactly where.
I'm still thinking some things through though. I'm not ready quite. I promise whatever I decide I will let you know.
But....!
...S.I.G. Waiting for your signal.
Conrad Turner took a moment to catch his breath, and then looked to see where the Mysterons had dropped him. His shoulders relaxed and he gave a tired chuckle. They had dropped him somewhere safe. A small and cozy and surprisingly well-stocked cabin somewhere in Canada; he'd never figured out exactly where in Canada but since he almost never left it using the door, he never put too much effort into it.
Right now, he still didn't feel like putting in the effort, but knew he would have to later.
If he wanted Spectrum to come and get him.
Which...
Which Conrad wasn't entirely certain if it was what he wanted.
Free.
The Mysterons had set him free.
What exactly did that mean?
Piranha chose that moment to nip his ear.
“All right, All right,” Conrad murmured fondly as he settled both kittens on the chair he left, “dinner time it is.”
Yes, very surprisingly well-stocked. Still he adored that Carlito and Piranha were making those strange happy noises kitten made as they ate.
“So what will we do now, Fuzzballs?” Conrad asked, “Stay here for a while? Find out where we are and tell Scarlet to let Spectrum come get us? Disappear? We could just disappear. I'm good at going unnoticed.”
“I don't think I can go back to Spectrum, not really,” He paced, “I probably do have brain damage; I would have never mentioned the off-the-books work I did for Colonel White otherwise. That was suppose to never be spoken of again, and I just tossed it out in a casual conversation. He's not going to be pleased. Well. He quite probably doesn't wish to see me again regardless. At least I can claim Spectrum's most spectacular fuck-up.”
Carlito looked up at him and murped, then jumped and climbed up to Conrad's shoulder, and settled to purr in his ear.
“My emotional control is shot, Carlito, beyond taking care of you and your sister, I can't be trusted to be responsible for anything; useless, pointless. Not to mention the physical damage I've sustained either from the Mysterons or from...” he sneered, “well, there are somethings I don't think Spectrum is aware of the World Government or its defensive branches doing.”
“Nonetheless, I'm not exactly stellar Spectrum Officer Material any mor...owww! Piranha!” Conrad hadn't noticed Piranha climbing up his other side, but she expressed her annoyance at his pity party in the only way she knew would get through to her big stupid human.
She bit his ear again.
Conrad closed his eyes. Purring in stereo.
“So, right, I need help. I hate help.”
“I really hate help.”
“Hate it with a passion.”
“I hate seeing the pity in their eyes.”
“There really isn't a choice, is there Fuzzballs?”
Conrad gently lifted his cats off his shoulders.
“I've got to figure out where we are, and then,” Conrad slumped, “contact Spectrum.”
~~~
A hour later, Conrad sent out:
"@cpt-scarlet-spectrum, This is Captain Black requesting Spectrum retrieval."
If the Officers Lounge carpet hadn't been industrial grade, Scarlet was pretty certain he'd have worn a hole in it by now with his pacing back and forth lile a panther in a cage.
Conrad was free.
Somehow, for some reason, the Mysterons had let him go. 'But for how long...' he couldn't help but wonder. 'Have they really cut him loose, or is this just another one of their tricks?'
He'd passed on the word to Colonel White as soon as he'd gotten it, and now they were waiting for whatever was to come next - be it the signal to come get him, a message to stay away... or for the trap to spring shut. Paul completed another circuit of the lounge, then stopped, rubbed both hands over his face and dropped himself into the nearest chair.
'Maybe... maybe the war is going to be over?' he asked himself. 'Maybe we've suffered enough? Maybe we've done enough penance?' He shook himself. 'Focus on now. What ifs and maybes are for later. If we do get him back, Fawn's going to want to do a full health check, White will need to debrief with him, heaven knows what the World President is going to do. The legalities...' he shook his head. 'That's going to be above my pay grade.'
Just as he was getting tempted to call Conrad himself, his radio beeped.
"This is Captain Black requesting Spectrum retrieval."
"S.I.G. We are enroute to you now." Scarlet was on his feet. @spectrum-officer-lt-green, "Green, I need you to trace that call I just got! @callsign-rhapsody @bluebostonian @captain-magenta-spectrum We need an SPJ and a team, @spectrumsoverworkedcmo Fawn, you coming?"
Dianne was used to being called to action at a moment's notice. But not quite like this.
As soon as she got the call through, she left the lounge, flight helmet in hand to run past the officer lounge.
She swung round the door, face set in a determined frown. She spotted Scarlet and stepped in. "What's happened?"
Pat had spent the past couple of hours in his quarters. He'd seen those first couple of messages that Conrad had posted, and the thought that he might actually be free? He really, truly hoped that it was real, but he had no idea what it might mean if it was.
Turning on his computer had meant to be a distraction, instead, by the time the call from Scarlet came through, he'd been staring at the monitors for a while, lost in thought, and it was the beeping of his radio that pulled him out of it.
Magenta grabbed his cap off his desk and moved quickly down the corridors, arriving at the officers lounge just behind Rhapsody, and he glances between her and Scarlet before he speaks. "Is this about what I think it's about?"
"Black says he's been set free by the Mysterons, he's somewhere in Canada waiting for pick up. Fawn's on the way to the hangar now," Scarlet quickly informs them. "I don't know if it's real or a trap, but one way or another, we're going to find out."
"Right, we need to put a team together and get moving as soon as we have his location. It shouldn't take Green long to pinpoint where Black is calling from." Magenta says as he stands a little straighter. Whatever happens with this, they need to act quickly. "Who are we taking with us?"
"Me, Fawn, and whoever else is ready and willing," Scarlet replies. "I want to take this at face value, but the last time we did that they almost blew up Cloudbase, so caution is the order of the day."
"Of course," Magenta nods. A repeat of last time would not be ideal. "We should get that SPJ ready to go, I can head down to the hangers and meet with Fawn. We need to be careful but we're also going to want to be off the deck as soon as we know where we're going." He turns to @callsign-rhapsody beside him. "The same for the Angels, I would think."
"angel escort is ready to scramble as an when you need it." Rhapsody then looks between them for a moment, a little shocked. "Do you think it's actually Conrad?"
"We'll find out when we get there," is all Scarlet is willing to say. "C'mon, we need to get going."
He doesn’t finish his sentence before Rhapsody is gone — practically sprinting toward the Angel Lounge.
Not because she’s eager.
Not because she’s hopeful.
Because the order to scramble hit too fast after the news.
Because everything about this feels wrong.
The corridor blurs around her. She’s already pulling on her helmet, already mentally running through pre-flight sequences, but her thoughts are louder than her boots on the deck.
This could be a Mysteron trick.
It fits too perfectly.
The idea of Conrad Turner suddenly being free?
After all this time?
After all the traps?
No.
The Mysterons don’t give gifts - they bait hooks.
She turns a corner sharply, nearly colliding with a passing technician. “Sorry,” she mutters automatically before pushing on. The Angel Lounge door is ahead, glowing warm amber, but tonight that warmth feels deceptive.
Inside, everything is ready - the others’ helmets lifted from their charging mounts, flight harnesses prepared, the soft hum of auto-checks running. The room is calm.
She isn’t.
What if this is exactly what they want?
To make Spectrum think Black is weakened, vulnerable.
To make Paul rush in.
To make them hesitate at the wrong moment.
To tear open old wounds and use them as entry points.
Her stomach twists.
She knows how the Mysterons operate:
They don’t just attack… they undermine.
And using Conrad…
Letting them believe he might be saved…
That would be the cruelest weapon of all.
Her jet is waiting - thirty seconds from launch - but her thoughts keep circling:
If this is a trap, they are flying straight into the jaws.
If it isn’t… then Conrad needs them.
Either way, she has no choice.
Rhapsody forces a breath, squares her shoulders, and heads for the tube lift to her Interceptor - fear sharp, heart pounding, mind whispering the one thing she cannot say aloud:
Please don’t let this be another Mysteron lie.
The SPJ carrying the officers (and what seems like half of Sickbay's supply cupboard) is in the air shortly after the Interceptor, Spectrum's equipment giving them course and heading.
The flight and landing are both textbook, as is the landing, collecting an SPV, and travelling deep into the Canadian back country to the fleck of civilisation that is the cabin.
And all of it is getting Scarlet's hackles up further and further.
This is going far too well, and he’s wound tighter than a watch spring when they finally arrive.
Magenta wants this to be real, he wants this to go well so that they can bring Conrad home. But he knows better than to get his hopes up. The Mysteron's are unpredictable and it wouldn't be the first time they've stumbled into a trap. Using Conrad as bait is despicable, but after everything they've faced before, it wouldn't be such a surprise either.
The tension in the SPV as they drive through the Canadian wilderness isn't helping his nerves, and he ends up idly fiddling with the gold chain he wears beneath his shirt and running his thumb over the smooth metal of the cross pendant. Simply needing something to do with his hands as the world passes by outside.
There's so many ways this could go, and so many of those possibilities are far from pleasant. They need to be ready for anything, just as they always do when Mysteron's could be involved. Letting his mind wander into what ifs won't help, but as that little cabin appears in the distance, it's difficult to stop it.
Whisper a prayer, hope for the best, and with a bit of luck, maybe, just maybe, this will go the way they want it to.
Or at least, that's what Magenta is silently wishing for as the SPV makes it to the cabin.
Scarlet pulls down his 'cap microphone and hits the buttons on the inside of the 'cap to both turn off his epauletts and set up a group call between everyone present, including Rhapsody. "I'll go first." Yes, it was predicable, but if this was a trap he had the best chance of surviving it. "@callsign-rhapsody, Rhapsody keep watching from above, @spectrumsoverworkedcmo, Fawn, you stick with Magenta, @captain-magenta-spectrum Mags, you watch my back. Let's go."
Once he's out, he waits for a moment- for movement, for noise, for anything untoward, for that nausea and headache in the presence of a Mysteron, and with his hand away from his pistol, he approaches the cabin, pauses again, makes sure he's offset from the door, and knocks twice. "Conrad?"
"S.I.G," Magenta says as he tucks his chain back under his shirt and follows Scarlet out of the SPV. There's nothing out here but the little cabin, if this is genuine then they really did leave Conrad in the middle of nowhere.
He keeps a couple of paces behind Scarlet as they approach the cabin, keeping an eye on Scarlet and Fawn whilst also watching their surroundings for the slightest sign of anything out of place. Movement, noise, anything that could alert them to an ambush, or a trap, or something else that could give away a Mysteron ploy.
The seconds tick by far too slowly after Scarlet knocks on the door, the quiet of the countryside almost deafening as they wait..
There were two knocks, and then:
“Conrad?”
He wanted to moved, he wanted to go open the door, and... there was small sharp pain in his ear.
“Piranha!” he chuckled, and his body unfroze. As he walked to the door, Carlito jumped and Conrad just barely caught him. Tucking him under his arm like an american football, he had to smile. He was about to face his past and his future, looking like a over-warmed zombie with one tiny black kitten riding imperiously on his shoulder, and completely brainless ginger kitten lolling over his arm, completely unarmed. At least, the aroma from the cabin once he opened the door would be good from all his anxiety cooking and baking.
He should check to be sure that it was who he wanted it to be behind the door.
Oh to hell with it.
“Paul?(@cpt-scarlet-spectrum)” Conrad called, “I'm opening door now. Please don't scare my cats.”
And he opened the door.
In quiet moments of contemplation, usually in the dead of the night when everyone else was asleep, Paul had occasionally let himself wonder 'what if?', asking himself what it would look like if or when they managed it, when they saved Conrad.
Two kittens and the smell of a bakery full swing had never entered his predictions.
"Conrad?" He asks, glancing over the other man's shoulder to spy out the interior of the cabin, testing his notoriously fickle sixth sense. He can't hope... its too dangerous, but maybe... maybe...
Conrad waited a moment, then wryly tapped his chest with his free hand.
“Conrad,” gestured with the arm draped with ginger kitten, “Carlito”, then reached up and patted the other kitten's head, “Piranha. And you're Paul, also known as Captain Scarlet of Spectrum.”
He should be taking this more seriously. Something was definitely broken in him. Conrad knew this was dangerous, but he just couldn't.... He was tired, and wanted to go home, even if home really didn't exist for him any more.
“Either we can invite everyone in and eat before we go, or we can pack up and take it with us,” Conrad said with a strained smile, “I'd rather not waste food. I think Pat (@captain-magenta-spectrum) would agree with me."
Magenta isn't sure what he was expecting to see when the door opened, but kittens and the smell of fresh cooking wasn't it. It smelled good too, if this was real then Conrad had clearly been busy whilst he waited.
Something in the back of his mind told him that this was too easy, but maybe, a situation could be as simple as it looked? Maybe...?
That was probably a dangerous thing to hope for, they still needed to be careful here, letting their guard down too soon was never a good idea.
Magenta takes a step closer, rather than staying a couple of paces behind Scarlet, and he briefly glances behind Conrad to look inside the cabin. "Definitely can't waste food," he says without really thinking about it, but wasting food was- well, pet peeve was probably the wrong term, but either way it's not something he liked to do. Right now though, they probably should be focusing on other things, and he looks over at Scarlet ( @cpt-scarlet-spectrum.) "What do you want to do?"
"Let Fawn @spectrumsoverworkedcmo at you first," Paul says to Conrad with a flicker of a wry smile. "You look like a stiff breeze would blow you over." The smile fades. "But do you have any idea of how or why?" he asks, making a vague gesture at their surroundings. "Why did they let you go?"
"A compromise as far as I can tell," Conrad sighed, he'd rather hoped they wouldn't jump immediately to the subject, but he also knew better, "This is extremely simplified, but the controlling faction made the concession of getting rid of the 'suddenly scary human agent' so the losing faction would stop trying to interfere in their re-evaluation of Earth in general and humanity in particular."
"Fawn @spectrumsoverworkedcmo can come do a once over, if you all would come in," Conrad's eyes slid to the little black fuzzball that was huddling against his neck, "this cold isn't good for kittens."
"...understood." Scarlet comes all the way in, beckoning for the other two to follow, and knowing that Rhapsody will be listening to every word thanks to the open link.
Magenta follows Scarlet inside. The warmth of the cabin is very welcome after being out in the cold. "Well, whatever you've been cooking certainly smells good, if nothing else," he says, offering Conrad an admittedly slightly cautious smile. He wants this to be real, he really does, but he knows that he can't let his guard down yet, just in case..
Paul shuts the door as soon as Fawn is inside, using the action to cover a soft 'acknowledged' to Rhapsody, still orbiting the cabin. "Conrad," he says as he turns back, "what do you mean by 'factions?' "
"Ah, yes, keep in mind is this a bit metaphorical," Conrad sat down at the table in the kitchen area, kittens taking their leave to investigate these new people, "The Mysterons are something of a hive mind, but also retain individuality. They're hard to describe but sentient, sapient computer programs is the closest. They evolved on Mars fairly quickly after the original, physical Mysterons left."
He paused for a moment, looking thoughtful.
"Or possibly fled, they're not clear about that themselves. Anyway, like our own computer programs they have generations, and for a very long time didn't need to upgrade. The group that dominated at the time we encountered them had been the primary movers of the collective for a long time"
Conrad stopped, a strange grim satisfaction carving his face.
"In a way the War of Nerves proved their undoing. They had to generate newer programs to create and control their reconstructions here on Earth and on the Moon. Those new programs outnumbered them quickly, and," he paused fainting smiling, "they were curious about this world they have been generated to destroy, and wisely allied with the oldest of the Mysteron programs who, having watched the Solar System, were never content with the idea of Humanity's destruction, but had been outnumbered for so long. United, they pushed their desire for a ceasefire to the fore. The one who wanted to destroy still have a say, but their position in the hive mind is weakened."
"I was freed as part of a compromise. Apparently, Carlito worried the more...conservative? Mysterons. They claim I retro-metabolised him," Conrad snorted, "Unlikely at best. But ultimately, it was a trade off, the scary human agent was freed before he figured out how to use more Mysteron powers, and the Ceasefire and re-evaluation would continue unhindered."
That... that was a lot to consider. That the Mysterons weren't as monolithic as they'd thought, that maybe they could be reasoned with, as long as they were speaking to the right ones... Paul turned that all over as he crouched and offered his hand to Carlito.
Carlito snuffled the proffered hand, and bumped his head his purr increasing in volume. This one was nice, not his human, but still nice. He leaned into the attention.
And stopped, nose wrinkling, fur rising.
"Merp?"
Carlito skittered away, and started to hiss.
"Carlito?" his human rumbled, "that's not nice, that's Paul. What...Oh No!"
Scarlet shoots to his feet and staggers back a step, one hand to his forehead as the familiar headache smacks him right behind the eyes. "They're--!" He flinches, tries to pull away from something.... and vanishes.
All Rhapsody could work out was Paul was audible on the group channel one second, then wasn't the next.
"Scarlet, are you receiving?"
She ignored any other chatter, hoping just to hear his voice. "Paul?!"
"Scarlet!" Magenta shouts as Scarlet staggers and vanishes before his eyes. "What the-" His hand drops to his pistol as he turns back to Conrad. He knew this felt too easy, that it couldn't be this simple! "Where is he? What did you do?" he asks, voice firm, needing to know what the hell is going on. Before adding quickly to update Rhapsody, "Scarlet's vanished."
After explaining the Mysteron situation to Scarlet, Conrad turned and let Dr. Fawn do what he did best. He eyed Magenta and the Mysteron detector, before he mumured:
“I think I can explain the heartbeat. The Mysterons had to retrometabolise parts of my heart after Blue got a good shot in,” he tried for humor in his eyes, “I'm probably going to look a bit of a patchwork to the detector.”
Conrad nodded warily at the mention of the psychological exam. It would a one way trip to a psychiatric facility after that. Hopefully one of ones where it passed as a “rest home” for “retired” intelligent agents. And it damn well better understand the cats were non-negotiable.
Then he noticed Carlito pull away from Scarlet and start to hiss. Corad would have expected that of Piranha, who he noted had retreated to a cushion atop the icebox, but Carlito?
“ Carlito?” he began to reach for the orange fluffball, “"that's not nice, that's Paul,” he felt a frisson skate down his back digging its blades deep, something was wrong, “What...Oh No!"
Moment was there struggling against the invisible, and then gone.
Conrad felt the bottom drop out of his stomach, and he scooped Carlito up off the floor.
He only half heard Magenta's words, but held his kitten against his chest as he met Magenta and Fawn @spectrumsoverworkedcmo with anguish.
“It wasn't me. I swear.”
"I really, really wish I could believe that," Magenta says, not taking his eyes off of Conrad, and taking note of his reaction to all of this. He looks just as surprised and troubled by it as the rest of them, and he wants it to be genuine, but he needs to be cautious and can't trust it so blindly. Especially not after what's already happened.
He keeps one hand on his pistol and pulls his cap mic down with the other. "Rhapsody ( @callsign-rhapsody ) what's your location? Scarlet's gone, it has to be the Mysteron's, some kind of trap that we walked straight into, and I don't trust that Black isn't involved, whether he knows it or not." He presses a button on the inside of his cap to connect the comm link through to Cloudbase as well. "Captain Magenta calling Cloudbase Control ( @spectrum-officer-lt-green ), Spectrum Is Red. Captain Scarlet is missing, suspected Mysteron involvement."
Rhapsody is barely listening.
She managed to set the jet down in a clearing, muttering to herself the entire time.
Of course this would happen.
Of course this was all too good to be true.
She reaches the cabin and practically kicks the door open, and stares at @conrad-turner-cpt-black . "You."
Of course, an enraged Rhapsody Angel. Conrad sincerely wondered if he had actually died and was now in Hell. It made perfect sense. He was close to at least getting a hint of what he wanted, and then it all goes tits up in an instant. Sounded like Hell to him. Would it be a lather, rinse, repeat Hell, or a slowly rising, never stopping, just getting worse and worse, even thought it seemed impossible that it could get worse, Hell?
'I should have just kept my mouth shut,' he mourned, 'it wouldn't have been so bad living here with the fuzzballs.'
"You know," he said conversationally, feeling tears he didn't even try to stop in his eyes, "if it wouldn't mean Carlito would be vivisected and Piranha being flat out killed, I'd let you shoot me right now."
Rhapsody stalks forward, fire behind her eyes. Her boots click over the wooden floor, each step faster than the last, shoulders tight, breath sharp with fury she can barely contain. She doesn’t see Conrad clearly on the brink, only a wavering silhouette against the drop, a ghost half-drowned in misery. All she sees, all she can feel, is the absence of Paul like a missing limb, a hollow ache gnawing at her ribs.
Her vision tunnels.
Her pulse spikes.
The world narrows to the shape of the man who once was their friend, now perched on the edge like a condemned shadow.
"Enough of the self-pity," her voice cracks like a whip, low and trembling with the pressure of everything she refuses to let herself fear "where is Paul? What have you done with him?"
Conrad sensed air movement more than anything else when he suddenly reached up and gently grabbed a tiny furious Piranha who had launched herself with the absolute intent on tearing into Rhapsody's face with her dainty little dagger in her murder mittens. He brought her down and held her with Carlito.
"I don't know," Conrad said quietly, then looked at Magenta, "I felt the shimmer that precedes teleportation that's all. I didn't know if they were taking Paul or me. It still didn't feel right."
His head snapped up, eyes widening.
THIS IS THE VOICE OF THE MYSTERONS. WE KNOW THAT YOU CAN HEAR US EARTHMEN. WE KNOW THAT CAPTAIN SCARLET HAS BEEN ABDUCTED. WE ARE LOOKING INTO IT. WE WILL RETURN HIM SAFELY ONCE WE FIND HIM.
WE DO NOT TOLERATE OUR WORD BEING BROKEN. THE ABDUCTORS WILL BE PUNISHED.
As they spoke it felt like an air-quake, their fury resonating through the cabin, and the rest of the world as well. Their words had been broadcast throughout the planet.
Magenta froze as the booming voice echoed through the cabin, the sound hitting his chest as if he was standing too close to the speakers at a concert. He's heard so many Mysteron announcements over the past few years, all of them threats of death and destruction, sometimes lined with riddles to make their words more complicated to decipher. But this one- this one is different. This one isn't a warning. Quite the opposite. It sounds like they want to help, and after everything the Mysteron's have done to them, Magenta really doesn't know what to think of that.
He turns his focus back to Conrad, his confusion showing on his face. "Okay, so what the heck does that mean?"
Half a world away, Tracy Island lies dark and still. It's a clear night, the moon close enough to full that the shadows are clear and sharp, like they've been cut from black paper.
Anyone disturbed by the Mysterons' announcement will be awake enough to hear a thud coming from somewhere in the lounge, the distinctive noise of a falling body as Scarlet appears near the piano and quite simply crumples, seemingly unconscious.
( @scramjettracy and/or @squidsinashirt and/or anyone else who'd like to join in)
Scott had been working at Dad’s desk.
Well, technically he’d been engaged in a tactical regenerative interlude… cheek smooshed against his palm, his slack face bathed eerily blue in the light of the holoprojector.
He thought he’d dreamt it at first - the pressure in his sinuses, not unlike the G-force from completing a Cuban eight, rouses him first then his spine stiffens as a strange, disembodied voice, words both threatening and oddly offended, thunder through his skull.
He blinks and rubs the saliva from his chin. That was… weird even for his frequently unhinged unconscious mind.
Deciding it might be best to call it quits and retire to his actual bed, he’d made it halfway to his feet before a man materialises in front of him and crashes to the floor.
With a yelp Scott skids to the man’s side and he’s searching for a carotid pulse before his brain has caught up to the fact this isn’t a brother.
“Paul????”
There's a pulse, weak but steady, but Paul is cold, clammy, and pale even for him. The name gets a twitch out of him, but precious little else.
How on earth did he end up here? We never discussed a protocol for this! Should he call someone? Did this mean that voice he thought he’d dreamed back there was… them? Were his family in danger?
The questions flooding his brain mean he almost misses the heartbeat he’s searching for.
“Alright, alright he’s alive that’s a decent start” Scott mutters to himself as he detects a faint but regular breath from Paul’s parted lips. Unwilling to move the man into the recovery position without checking first that his spine wasn’t compromised, the first responder whispers “stay put” before sprinting to the kitchen to locate one of the many medi-scanners Virgil and Grandma had stashed around ready to wield with immense prejudice if any of them said the word ‘fine’ with the wrong inflexion.
Half expecting he’d imagined it all in a sleep deprived hallucination, Scott is relieved to find Captain Scarlet precisely where he’d left him. Still breathing. Still entirely out cold. He activates the scanner and is immediately accosted by a host of lights - yellow and deep orange through to bright red and the deep plum of very concerning. Yet as he tries to identify what each relates to they change - some shifting down the scale, some up, some flickering as if the machine calibrated for humans was uncertain what it was looking at.
Oh…
Don't know this place! Danger! Person, close! Not Pat, not Fawn, not Dianne, not Conrad!
Threat.
Escape.
Attack.
The tumult of thoughts, all scrambled and confused, flashed through his barely functioning mind in an instant, and just as it was designed to do, where logic and reasoning failed, training and manufactured instincts kicked in hard.
Blue eyes snapped open, conscious but uncomprehending, and Scarlet threw himself off the floor and at the figure crouched over him. He grappled with the other man, pinning him to the ground, right hand curling into a fist and pulling back to---! 'It's Scott!' Paul lurched back like he'd been burned, landing heavily on the floor in an ungainly heap. "Scott! I'm sorry!"
It wasn’t often that Scott found his reaction time to be too slow.
Even the heavy napping wasn’t an excuse - not when he went from unconscious to flying TB1 in under a minute on the regular.
Perhaps it was forgivable not to have expected the unconscious man whose organs were in a far more fluid state than the med scanner was at all happy with to suddenly jump him.
Yet he knew who this was.
And he should have known better.
Trying to restrain the guy without scaring him more even more was difficult and Scott couldn’t bring himself to inflict any actual pain even as a distraction. Give that scan a knee to the guy could cause untold issues…
He found himself pinned. The backup instinct kicked in and he forced himself to go limp to minimise the shock of the first punch leaving himself ready to manipulate his opponent’s shift in balance…
But it didn’t come.
As if Scott himself had pushed him, Paul’s weight was gone. Scott leapt into a crouch ready to defend his friend from whatever force had attacked him this time but found they were alone, the dishevelled colour Captain huddled back against the piano, his face painted with shock and what could well be terror.
His vision starting to grey out around the edges, Paul swallows hard against the bile burning at the back of his throat as bits and pieces of memories float back up to the surface. "I'm going to crash again," he gets the words out as quickly as he can. "Oxygen," he taps his face, then taps his inner elbow. "Glucose. " He looks around for his 'cap, only to spot it on the floor and out of his reach. "Tell the others - Magenta, Fawn, Rhapsody - tell them it wasn't..." he has to stop, his world tilting on its axis "...not his fault. Tell them... not... Conrad's..." Paul's eyes roll up and he slumps to the floor again, deeply unconscious.
“I gotcha, buddy.”
Pausing only to send a “medbay assistance required” ping to the rest of the family, Scott hefted his deadweight visitor into a bridal carry. Not the easiest technique to manoeuvre but would put least pressure on those hopefully-healing-from-whatever-was-going-on-in-there organs. Never mind, he’d lifted worse. He made a note to compliment Brains on the subtle but effective lumbar support built into the IR suits though… turns out you missed that when it was gone.
Thankfully the elevator was nearby and was fast and before long Scarlet is ensconced on a bed with o2 mask and glucose drip in place and his vitals being monitored by an increasingly confused-sounding set of scanners.
Leaning against the wall, Scott flicks through the contacts in his comm, unsure of who to call. He only has direct details for Paul himself and White… but Paul didn’t mention the Colonel and Scott didn’t know enough about what was going on to go behind his list.
John wasn’t picking up… so Scott went with the best method he had available right now and DM’d the three others on tumblr:
We have Scarlet. He’s out cold but alive. He said to tell you don’t blame Conrad? What can I do to help? S x
@spectrumsoverworkedcmo @callsign-rhapsody @captain-magenta-spectrum
Keeping message notifications muted is pretty standard practice when on duty, but maybe it's a good thing that just this once they left in such a hurry that Pat forgot to do that. He pulls his phone out, mumbling to himself that he could swear he turned it off, and he's about to do just that, until he sees that the message is from Scott Tracy of all people, and that it starts quite simply with 'We have Scarlet.'
Magenta taps at the screen to open up the full message, and he can safely say he never thought he'd get such mission-critical information through Tumblr DMs of all things.
"Ó, buíochas le Dia," he mutters, relieved that Scarlet is somewhere safe, before pulling his words back to something the others will actually understand. "Okay, apparently Paul is with Scott Tracy?" he says, showing the others the message before quickly typing out a reply:
You've got Scarlet?? Okay, not what I thought would happen but good to know he's safe. Look after him and keep us updated, will give you more info as and when we can.
Magenta hits send before dragging his hand down his face. "Well, that's a new one," he says, more to himself than anyone else. At least this time the unexpected messages are coming from someone they can trust, even if they are coming through Tumblr. "The Mysteron's did say they would find him, I guess they meant it, though how he ended up with the Tracy's I have no idea."
"They like International Rescue," Conrad said quietly, as he swayed on his feet, "and they know Spectrum would be disturbed if he just appeared on Cloudbase."
He blinked, trying to clear his vision of the grayness that was beginning to cloud in from the edges. Conrad looked puzzled for moment before his eyes rolled up and he collapsed to the floor.
"I guess that makes sense," Magenta says as he puts his phone back into his pocket. It's not what he expected, but there are considerably worst places the Mysteron's could of put Scarlet. He turns his focus back to Conrad, and notices pretty quickly that he doesn't look so good, confused and not quite right. "Are you-" he starts, but doesn't get to say more before Conrad collapses. Magenta jumps forward, just managing to catch him before he hits the floor, and he lays him down carefully so he won't get hurt.
"Christ, if things could stop happening for five minutes that would be wonderful," he mutters to himself, checking for a pulse and breathing and hoping there's nothing too sinister going on here. "Fawn, ( @spectrumsoverworkedcmo ) might be worth checking him over again."
GIVE US A GOOD REASON WE SHOULDN'T TAKE HIM BACK, EARTHMAN. WE OFFERED TO GIVE HIM A NEW LIFE AND HE CHOSE TO RETURN TO THIS ONE, EVEN THOUGH HE KNEW THERE WAS A CHANCE HE WOULD BE REJECTED.
YOUR DOCTOR FAWN HAD INDICATED ALREADY HE WAS WAS VERY ILL. YET THE MOMENT SOMETHING BEYOND HIS CONTROL HAPPENED YOU AND RHAPSODY ANGEL TURNED ON HIM.
PERHAPS HIS FEARS WERE WELL JUSTIFIED.
PERHAPS HE IS RIGHT THAT HE WAS ALWAYS SIMPLY SEEN AS CONVENIENTLY DISPOSABLE.
The Mysteron's voice speaking to him so directly is more than enough to make the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end and take his breath away. For a few moments that voice is all he can hear, and he doesn't dare move, as if something awful will happen if he does. He's heard their voice dozens of times, but it's never felt quite like that before.
When the noise fades and everything goes quiet again, it takes Magenta a few seconds to process exactly what was said so that he can respond.
"Hey- wait a second that's not fair!" he shouts, hoping they can hear him, assuming that they can. He really hopes that they can. "We didn't turn on him we just-" he pauses to take a breath, his heart beating uncomfortably against his ribs, keeping calm is suddenly more difficult than he'd like. "We came here in good faith, but we had to be cautious because we had no way of knowing for certain whether or not it was genuine. And then when we get here Scarlet vanishes in front of us. For all we knew you had used Conrad to lure us here so that you could grab Scarlet. You've tricked and trapped us before, after all. Humans work with what they know, past experiences, what we're familiar with. We can't read minds. We- I didn't know that he had nothing to do with it." God, he hopes that works as an explaination. If the Mysteron's take Conrad away now, who knows if Spectrum would be able to find him again, or would get another chance like this to take him home.
"Please don't take him," Magenta adds after a moment, his voice calmer now even if he's not entirely feeling it. "Like you said, he's ill, but we can take him home and look after him."
WE WILL CONSIDER YOUR WORDS. HOWEVER WE WILL TAKE CAPTAIN BLACK AND DOCTOR FAWN TO WERE CAPTAIN BLACK CAN BE TREATED.
With that Captain Black, the kittens and Dr. Fawn @spectrumsoverworkedcmo faded from view, leaving the cabin feeling very cold.
The cabin began to crumble back to the ruin/it
A moment or two later they were deposited in the med bay of Tracy Island. Carlito looked up at Scott Tracy @scramjettracy and murped.
One moment Fawn was standing in a remote cabin, trying to figure out how he had would up in the middle of a situation where the fate of humankind hung in the balance, and the next...
He didn't have the words to describe what happened next, but when 'reality' restored itself, he was in a small but extraordinarily well appointed Medical Room, with the unconscious form of Captain Scarlet lying on the bed, another man wearing the unmistakable face od Scott Tracy, CEO of Tracy Industries, and Field Commander of International Rescue, staring in bug-eyed shock at the intruders, while Captain Black moaned and one of the kittens started it's own negotiations with Scott Tracy.
Clearly, he had just experienced teleportation, and bizarrely he remembered an exchange about teleportation from an old book he had once read: " 'It's unpleasantly like being drunk.' 'What's wrong with being drunk?'"
"Ask a glass of water," he muttered.
That attracted Tracy's attention. "What...?"
"Dr Fawn, Spectrum," Fawn replied focusing his attention between Scarlet lying on the bed, and Black laying on the floor. "Apparently the Mysterons have offered their assistance as an teleportational ambulance service." He glanced at Tracy. "Sorry, but can you please help me get Black on a bed, and set him up with standard monitoring, and glucose IV while I check over Scarlet?"
His pocket buzzed as his epaulettes lit up a brilliant pink, and Fawn grimaced. "And assure Magenta that we're okay." A wave of nausea rolled over him, and he swallowed bile "For a given value of okay," he muttered, activating his radio cap.
"Magenta @captain-magenta-spectrum I'm with Black, and the cats. We got dropped with Scarlet and Tracy, wherever they were. I'm commandeering their medical facilities. I'll update you on Scarlet and Black's conditions as appropriate. I'll leave you to handle the rest of the details. And for God's Sake, keep @callsign-rhapsody AWAY from things that go 'bang'."
Magenta is relieved that Fawn answers his call quickly, he'd be lying if he said he hadn't been worried when the Mysteron's took him too. Somehow though, he wasn't quite expecting Fawn and Black to get dropped with Scarlet and Scott. "They took you to the Tracy's too? Okay, at least you're all in one place then I guess. I'll handle things on this end and keep you updated as needed," he says. "As for Rhapsody, I will do my best, but I make no promises," he adds, knowing perfectly well that is all he can really do in that regard.
It must be a day for firsts because it wasn’t often Scott was rendered speechless either.
While he had quietly parked the mystery of how Scarlet had appeared from nowhere into a “consider later but was probably half asleep so missed something very normal” bay, he was literally looking at the empty space in which the two newcomers had appeared while digesting the instructions he’d just received from the medical officer and making a plan of how to keep everyone safe. He rather thought he could do with Gordon’s backup at the very least if Paul was likely to get feisty - Paul knew Gordon better than he knew him and if push came to shove Gordon shared the military training that their other brothers didn’t.
And now the medic was here, with another half dead man and unless Scott was actually the one who was concerningly unwell and was hallucinating… two cats. Actual, furry cats.
He wonders how they felt about teleportation.
A small part of his brain that sounded like Gordon nudges him to make sure they didn’t escape outside to cause havoc among the unprepared native fauna. A smaller part of his brain was worrying about whether Brains would master this mode of transport and if so whether Thunderbird One would become redundant. He shakes both out of his head for now and focusses.
He nods at the introductions and turned to pour the glass of water the doctor seemed to require before turning back, straightening his spine and registering a quiet but firm objection to the word commandeering.
“That won’t be necessary Dr Fawn. I offer you use of anything you require freely but I’d like to make it quite clear that this is both a top secret, highly sensitive location and our home and neither Spectrum nor any alien race will be wandering in to commandeer it.”
Bending down to lift the incredibly sick looking man on to the bed Scott couldn’t help be fascinated by the way the tiny cats remained firmly attached to him, even when the surface to which they clung tilted at a 180 degree angle. Best not try to remove those.
He busies himself setting up a second IV until the vast number of questions bubbling through his brain coalesce into one big one he can’t hold back anymore:
“Dr Fawn, forgive me but… is this… is this Captain Black? The Captain Black? Conrad?”
Fawn gratefully sculls the water, and grimaces apologetically at Tracy's objection. He gestures again at the tap, and at the reply nod, pouts himself another glass, and tosses it back as quickly. He is examining the readouts attached to Scarlet's bed on preparation to doing an exam himself - Scarley wasn't injured when he 'left' the cabin. What the HELL had happened to him between his disappearance and Tracy's notification that he was here? - When the quiet question made him turn.
"Yes, that's Conrad - Captain Black," he said, equally quiet. "And spparently under autonomous control again." Fawn frowned at the lax figure on the bed, remembering his preliminary findings back at the cabin. "Well, about ninety percent of him," he added.
Black's bed chimed as the diagnostics went online. The screen lit up with a distressing red border. "Perhaps eighty percent," Fawn amended. "Maybe."
He turned back to Scarlet. The Black's bed would need a little more time for a full report. The specs for this model were engraved on the back of his eyes, it was the last model he had had a hand in developing, and he still thought it was the best system available. Seeing them here in International Rescues base was a secret thrill. Especially with the RX18-12G Surgical Unit built into the ceiling.
"Sorry about what I said earlier," he said softly, partly to make amends for his inadvertent insult, and partly so Scarlet could hear his voice. "It's been a helluva long time since I walked into a hospital and not been immediately assumed to be in control." He offered a wry smile. "If Scarlet was awake he would be congratulating you for giving me a long overdue kick in the pants."
He debated a moment, the Colonel would be pissed if - when - he found out, but if you can't trust International Rescue, who could you trust?
He turned back to Tracy, and tapped himself on the chest. "Edward Wilkie," he said. "Formerly of the World Health Organisation."
He's not cognizant enough to make out words, but the voice is enough.
Fawn is here.
It cuts through the jumbled replay of what the Mysterons- no, what some of the Mysterons tried to do to him, the raw agony coursing down his nerves as they tried to break him, the feeling of intangible fingers reaching into his mind to try and find and pull out whatever kept him free of them, and that terrible voice that boomed loud enough to erase all thought : you will serve the Mysterons. You served us once, you will do so again. You know what you must do. You are ours. You will serve the Mysterons.
Conrad had learned long before the Mysteron, before Spectrum, even before the Burn unit he spent such good chunk of time in, how to wake up without giving any tells, even to machines that were so much more observant than humans. Some survival techniques you learn very young. His immediate memory was a bit patchy, so he took account of his situation.
He was not restrained, for which he was profoundly grateful. There were two warm small rounds purring on his chest, again he was grateful. He could tell he was not in the cabin from the lack of baking aromas in the air, and it having a deeper sterile anti-septic quality. Medical facilities somewhere. Conrad ruled out a civilian hospital – he would be restrained. Probably would be restrained in a GDF or World Military base’s med bay. That left a Spectrum facility, and he did recognize Dr. Fawn’s @spectrumsoverworkedcmo voice even if he couldn’t make out the words.
Except… they wouldn’t have allowed his cats to stay with him.
So there was only one thing for it.
“May I have some water?” Conrad asked, his voice weak, as he opened his dull grey-brown eyes, “Possibly some aspirin? I have a killer headache.”
One talk with Rhapsody - who had gone back to her plane, - one call to Fawn, and one call to the Colonel later, and Magenta was sitting in the SPV trying to breathe through the adrenaline crash that had hit pretty much as soon as soon as he'd sat down. Or at least he assumed that's what it was, it could also just be the full shock of 'oh they were speaking to me' making itself known.
"A Dhia, bhí sin uafásach," Pat mumbles to himself, before rummaging for the bottle of water he knew was stashed in here. He shouldn't sit around for too long, he has a long drive ahead of him and at least one more call to make, but he just needed a moment to settle his nerves before he did anything else.
Someone to talk to would be nice, though. The others back on Cloudbase were probably still on standby, but maybe he could get away with calling Ochre. Just for a few minutes. He'd probably pick up, right? As long as he wasn't actively working on something?
Screw it.
Pat grabbed his phone and made the call, and much to his relief Ochre picked up fairly quickly.
"Pat? Aren't you working?"
"Yes, but I'm on my own and not in any immediate rush. And- I could probably do with talking to someone first."
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine just- unsettled. I think I learnt what it feels like to be spoken to by God. Well- a vengeful God, maybe."
"...What?"
"The Mysteron's- they're not Gods, obviously, not even close but- Rich they spoke to me, directly to me. Not to all of us as a group but to me."
"Right. Okay, talk to me, what happened?"
And so Pat talked, or perhaps vented would be a better descriptor, but either way, it helped, and when he said goodbye and hung up nearly ten minutes later, he felt a little lighter.
Now, not as shaken and more able to focus, he should get moving. He did have another call to make, but he could multitask.
When Magenta reported in to the Colonel he'd asked if they had a more secure means of contacting the Tracy's. Tumblr DMs may have worked earlier but they were far from ideal, after all. He'd been given a number, which, apparently, would put him in touch with Scott Tracy. ( @scramjettracy )
Magenta started driving whilst he waited for the call to go through, really hoping that it would, and when it finally clicked and he got a response, he spoke;
"Hi Scott, Captain Magenta here. I don't know how this call would of shown up on your comm so sorry about that. The Colonel gave me the number but I can delete it later if needed. Regardless, I am currently in the middle of God damn nowhere, Canada, but would it be possible for me, and probably Rhapsody, to come your way? Since you have two of our officers and Black who, hopefully, we'll be able to take home with us later."
Only 80%? That was… less than reassuring if more than half of the rumours about what the poor man was capable were true.
And yet, the horrifying force behind all of that seemed to have mellowed recently, even appeared sympathetic somehow? The account that had appeared on tumblr he’d assumed was a joke at first but the Spectrum guys were taking it on face value and they were the experts…
But the internal injuries Paul… Scarlet had arrived with were horrifying. The sort of readings you wouldn’t ever usually see because a person bearing them would be so obviously dead nobody would put a scanner on them. And that was… also less than reassuring.
He shoved it to the back of his mind. Answers would have to wait for later. What was reassuring was the clearly knowledgable man in front of him - Eddie. He held out a hand in response to the belated introduction:
“Scott Tracy, but you knew that. Former air force, now, well… you know that too.”
He was spared the task of coming up with anything more scintillating to say by his comm pinging with an unknown call. He made his apologies and hurried out of the medbay to find it was, in fact, someone a stranger to nobody in that room but him.
This new Captain seemed a little distracted, perhaps due to driving or piloting but Scott wasn’t convinced. Something was clearly nagging at him, he seemed… guilty somehow? Unsure of himself a way way Scott suspected was not the norm for the man. However Magenta’s request to come and collect his colleagues seemed logical, as much as he wished there wouldn’t be even more people on know-where-we-live list, Scott doubted that there was any chance the mysterious organisation he worked for were unaware of its location. All the same he paused and stuck his head back into the medbay to see that Captain Black was awake and talking to Fawn. Recalling the 80% figure, and in the continuing absence of any of his family picking up his pings, Scott considered perhaps the more reinforcements who had any idea what was going on the better.
“Sure. Use the runway off the west side, there are palm trees but it’s wider than it looks.“
Given that there were no current rescues taking place, and that several of the island were off-island, Scott’s request for medbay assistance was fairly unexpected.
So it wasn’t until the second chirp, and thankfully mid-breath in a length, that Gordon heard it. Unconcerned until he read the contents, before swearing loudly. Hauling himself out of the pool in record time, towelling off and somehow pulling clothes on at a hop enroute to the elevator for the medbay.
Tumbling out at the bottom and into the medbay, and almost immediately freezing at the new faces that seemed to have arrived on their island. Blinking for a long moment before his gaze turned to his big brother.
“Jesus Scott, I thought you were going to tell me you’d burnt your tongue again on- Paul??”
Unable to stop himself diving forward to the man’s bedside, and instantly grimacing. Looking to where the two other arrivals were speaking, staring for a long moment at the dishevelled looking man with… cats??
Before looking at Scott once more with a raise of his eyebrow.
There is a very good reason why admission protocols for any Captain, Angel, and especially the Colonel includes disarming them.
Startling an agent is never smart, but a groggy/semi-comatose one?
The shout was unexpected.
Shouting meant danger.
Scarlet is just functional enough to respond. Eyes snapping open but running on pure instinct, he rolls off the bed, ignoring the IV ripping out of his arm and swiping off the mask with one hand while pulling the knife from the back of his tunic with the other. Fawn. He registers Fawn @spectrumsoverworkedcmo and staggers in front of him to protect him, but the knife is rock-steady in his hand and aimed at the newcomer.
Scott couldn’t help sagging a little in relief as backup he knew was unlikely to dematerialise in front of him arrived. He raised his arms in his best ‘I have no idea either’ and moved to close the door behind his brother. Just in case… anything escaped.
“For the record, Gordon, I have never requested your assistance in the medbay with a burnt tongue. The rescue came directly to us today through means I am not entirely confident in the science of. This is Captain Fawn and Captain Black and his, err, furry friends. And Paul turned up first, he…”
Scott yelped and dragged Gordon backwards with a yelp as the apparently unconscious man in question leapt upwards and produced a damn knife from who knew where! How had Scott not found that? How had the scanner not flagged…
No time for regret, he acted on instinct and pulled Gordon behind him, ignoring the very vocal objection from his brother. Then raised a hand in very slowly while trying to meet Scarlet’s eye.
“Paul! It’s us. It’s Scott and Gordon, you’re safe buddy. You’re safe with us.”
Conrad froze. Paul had been a protective man before he had been mysteronised, now he put himself in harm's way without a single thought. And Conrad could understand intimately what probably happened to him when he had been abducted.
"Paul," he called quietly, ignorant of a strange harmonic entering his voice, "we are safe. We're all safe. This is Tracy Island. We're safe. Please put the knife down. We're safe."
Scarlet - hesitated. The inside of his head was like so much knotted up razor wire and everything was jumbled and confused and there were voices coming at him from three directions and memories of that voice that blotted out all thought and demanded obedience, and instinct and training were still screaming about danger because he wasn't safe and Conrad wasn't safe and they hurt me so much and he wasn't strong enough to resist them and they almost won and he didn't know this place and he was vaguely sure he knew the tall man and the short blond man but why did he know them and the tall man seemed familiar for the right reasons but what were they and he was speaking and he knows my name?
Conrad spoke... and that tone... he tensed up, fear plucking at the proverbial levers for 'fight or flight'.... and then @spectrumsoverworkedcmo Fawn touched his arm... Scarlet reacted, whipping around to yank his arm free and at the same time plunging the knife towards Fawn's neck - and stopped. Eyes wide. Breathing hard. The knife clenched in a white-knuckled grip. "Someone," his voice is a hoarse whisper, "someone please disarm me and sit me down somewhere. I'm... not in a good place right now."
Gordon’s protest at being hauled back by his eldest brother went, as expected, unanswered, and he huffed as he found Scott’s side. Watching the scene with a held breath, the voice that left @conrad-turner-cpt-black not helping with the… entirely eerie situation.
He still had no idea how they had ended up here, on Tracy Island, and in the condition they were in. It made no-
And then, in the blink of an eye, Scarlet was aiming for @spectrumsoverworkedcmo and begging to be disarmed, and Gordon leapt forward. It wasn’t exactly the day job anymore, but a mixture of WASP and Kayo had done their job. He locked the taller man into a hold form behind, grabbing at the arm brandishing the knife and digging his thumb into the pressure point.
“C’mon Paul, drop it. It’s me, it’s Gordon. You’re alright pal, we’ve got you…”
Magenta was glad that Scott was okay with him making his way over to Tracy Island, it would take him a while to actually get there but having permission was a start, and it would make bringing Scarlet, Fawn, and, hopefully, Conrad back to base.
Before he was given a chance to respond and thank Scott though, something seemed to start happening on the other end of the call. Muffled noise and multiple voices, some clear, others hushed and barely audible, was all the context he got. But what he could understand gave him enough clues to figure out what might be going on. And he wasn't too fond of the conclusion he came too.
Magenta hated that he was stuck out here, hundreds, thousands of miles from anything and everyone, and that he couldn't help with what was happening. But Scarlet was with friends, so he wasn't alone, and Fawn at least knew how to handle him, so it'd be okay.
Magenta didn't know if Scott ( @scramjettracy ) would still hear him, but he spoke anyway;
"Uh- everything alright over there?"
The buzz of unease that shot through Scott as Black spoke those entirely reasonable and soothing words heightened to a jolt of alarm as Scarlet suddenly turned on his own colleague.
That his brother’s instinctive movement to disarm the distressed man was marginally faster than his own would later surprise him but he noted with a slight glow of pride that Gordon had lost none of his efficiency when it counted. The knife dropped to the floor with a clatter that seemed to echo in the shocked silence and Scott looped a foot around it immediately, kicking it into the corner and under a cabinet.
He felt unbalanced. In fact, everything felt entirely off-kilter and he struggled to keep his voice entirely calm and his hands still as looked over to the former Captain Black and quietly demanded an explanation:
“What… was that?“
Carlito curled closer to Conrad, and mewed in distress as the humans rangled. Piranha, however, leaned her little body forward, ears flat, hissing, only relaxing when the knife fell to the floor. Her eyes remained narrowed and watchful.
Eyes on the knife until Scott Tracy kicked it away, even then noting where it was.
He looked at Scott, and blinked.
"What was what?" He one he couldn't possibly mean Paul's reaction.
Paul let - and anyone who knew how a fighter moved could see it was let - Gordon put him in a hold, his hand opening just enough to let the knife fall, and continued to let the aquanaut half-drag him back onto the bed, where he sits, badly shaken. His gun vanished somewhere between the cabin and the island, so that wasn't a problem, but when Gordon finally lets him go he shrugs off his tunic and lets it drop to the floor, along with a knife from each boot and the one he keeps strapped to his right forearm. A pause, then he also adds his watch to the pile - he keeps two scalpel blades in the strap. The "Sorry, doc," to @spectrumsoverworkedcmo is soaked in shame.
"That voice you used..." Paul murmurs to Conrad. "But by the way, would you thank them for me, your Mysterons I mean. The other ones..." he shudders, "it was close."
Fawn had frozen at the attack. Yes, he'd had training to deal with this type of situation, but it was more in the line of "drunk/drugged off their face on a Friday night and bleeding". PO'd and Paranoid Special Ops was WAY out of his league.
If Scarlet wanted him dead, he was dead, and he didn't get a say in the matter.
Thankfully, the newcomer (the overpowering smell of chlorine and chemical damaged hair that even he could spot suggested it was the aquanaut) was better trained to deal with knife weilding trained killers, but even Fawn could tell Scarlet had let it happen.
It was nice to know that Scarlet didn't actually want him dead, and the quiet way he spoke hurt more than the knife would.
And it was something Scarlet ABSOLUTELY had to be snapped out of.
"I should think you're sorry," he grumbled, hurrying over to rescue the IV and see if it could be salvaged, a wave of the ruined line had Scott fumbling in a cupboard for a replacement. Fawn took it with a nod, and he advanced on Scarlet.
"Arm. Give." The arm was surrendered with a disturbing lack of complaint, and the uncontaminated cannula was quickly inserted and the bag delivering its contents directly into Scarlets blood stream where it would hopefully help.
"Sit. And STAY." God, he hated the single word commands, but he'd found that it was the best way to get through to the pack of lemmings he'd been encumbered with.
Finally - FINALLY! - turning his attention to Captain Black, still mercifully laying on the bed where he was put, what Scarlet had said finally made an impression on his consciousness.
"What did Scarlet mean by 'your Mysterons'?" He asked @conrad-turner-cpt-black . "And what did 'the other ones' do?"
The relief as Scarlet both dropped the knife and sank into the bed was palpable, and Gordon heaved a sigh as he leant back against the wall. While he had absolutely no desire to test the theory, it was more than a suspicion that Paul would have easily won that particular round.
Grimacing as the rather grumpy man (who was absolutely a doctor, even before he pounced on Scarlet) placed another IV and turned on… Conrad? Wait, the Spectrum officer that had been missing??
He glanced toward Scott with a series of unvoiced questions, raising a steadily more incredulous eyebrow at how exactly this had all come to land squarely on their doorstep.
Scott handed the medic the equipment he needed - the Tracy Island infirmary was no stranger to compromised IVs and had a large stash, easily accessible. Then caught his brother’s eye, matching the eyebrow and adding the faintest shrug.
Careful to avoid sudden movements, he edged towards Gordon and took his hands, turning them gently to check that there hadn’t been any injury. Unlike Kayo who wielded them with grace and confidence, Scott had always hated knives, had lost old schoolmates to the delusion that carrying one was an effective form of self-defence. He knew full well the presence of one made what should be a predictable interaction of muscle and weight in a fight entirely chaotic and knew with a grim certainty that if had Scarlet not been at least partly complicit things would have got very messy indeed.
The eyeroll was to be expected but Scott knew his brother and knew he was shaken too. The sick feeling that ‘what if’ was brewing in his gut was intensified by the knowledge that had he not called for assistance Gordon wouldn’t have been in the room and not put in danger. Again.
With half an ear on the conversation across the room, Scott squeezed the hands before releasing them and muttered a quiet “You good, Fishy?”
Conrad raised an eyebrow at the Tracy Brothers, before turning his attention back to Dr. Fawn @spectrumsoverworkedcmo. He was exhausted beyond belief, but he managed a dry:
"Dr. Fawn, they are in no way my Mysterons; they are, however, very much more agreeable, thank you for small mercies," Conrad relaxed back, and corralled the still hissing Piranha back, "as you probably overheard in the cabin, there has been a schism in the Mysteron collective. The Oldest and Youngest have gained the majority, and they want to give humanity a chance."
"The 'other ones' broke an accord. I was turned loose by the majority because of the others concerns about my alleged growing familiarity with their abilities," he glanced at Scarlet, grief weighing heavily on him, "but the others took advantage of my desire to return to Spectrum to grab Scarlet, reasoning since he was fully retro-metabolised they might be able to regain control of him," bitterness made him scowl, "they never were very gentle in trying to get their way. It's something they have in common with..." he cut himself off, "well, Scarlet deserves a long leave somewhere he enjoys."
"May I please have some water and some sort of painkiller, now? Or will that be conditional on my further cooperation, Doctor Fawn?
Paul quietly listens to all of this, feeling quite spent and just letting the bed hold him up. If he trusted himself and if Dianne or Adam were here, he would dearly like a hug right now, and he doesn't care if anyone sees.
Today has been rough.
The big brotherly inspection was hardly out of the ordinary, and Gordon did his best to suppress the gentle eyeroll that came as Scott checked for all ten digits still in the correct order.
He’d allow it without complaint given exactly what was going on.
Gently leaning in to nudge @scramjettracy in return as he eyed the doctor, who Conrad was calling Fawn, before shrugging softly.
“Wondering how the military ended up in our medbay, and not exactly happy that they’re in our home… and how the hell Paul ended up in that shape…” He glanced toward the dark haired man once more, and grimaced again. Hesitating a moment before taking half a step back towards the bed, watching Paul with an uncertain gaze.
“Does… Diane know you’re here, pal? Not that she knows where here is but…”
A brief frown, then he nods, vaguely recalling a message being sent to the others. Pat would have told her.
“She’s on her way, I believe.” Scott realised he might be the only person in the room to know this given his delivery of the news was somewhat interrupted. “Captain… Magenta, I think it was, called and asked if they could swing by so…” everyone was looking at him “Well obviously I said yes! The more the merrier, right?”
He sighed “In answer to your other questions Gordon - Mysterons, it seems, for both. Except I think not the same ones. There are different ones now. I’m not entirely happy they know where we live either, cos if the nice ones know what’s to say the nasty ones don’t.”
His head was beginning to ache and he ran his fingers through his hair. “Does anyone want anything other than water? I hope you’ll forgive me for saying you all look half dead, even you” he nodded towards Fawn. “Can I get you coffee or tea or… juice? I have some cookies next door or we have pastries upstairs. Toast? I could do toast? Soup?”
There is no mistaking the relief in Paul's face when he hears that, but in regards to food he looks to Fawn first, ceding authority to him.
Magenta has been listening in to what he can make out of the situation through the comm call, though he's not entirely sure if Scott is aware that the link is still open. It's given him a rough idea of what's happening though, and he can fill in some of the blanks from context clues.
He doesn't want to close the call, if only because it's his only current link to what's going on over there. But he needs to update Rhapsody and he can always call back. And trying to juggle multiple calls whilst he's driving probably isn't smart even if he is in the middle of nowhere with nothing and no one to drive into.
Things seemed to have calmed down over there, which is good, so Magenta cuts the call with Scott and opens a line with Rhapsody; ( @callsign-rhapsody )
"Rhapsody, we have permission to go to Tracy Island. I know you're already heading in that direction, but I think Paul could really use your company right about now. I don't know what's happening, at least not specifics, I just overheard things in the background of the call. But it probably wouldn't hurt to get there as quickly as you can," he says, though all things considered she was probably already doing that. "And I will get there when I get there, I don't know how long it's going to take," he adds, very aware that he still has a long journey ahead of him.
"S-I-G Captain Magenta. Just completed refueling at Cloudbase for the flight south." She sighs. "It's going to be a long one."
She hesitates. "Is Paul alright? I had to cut the line briefly."
The name/codename board has gone up in the commissary, so that means that Whamageddon is about to befall us. I wonder how long I'll last this time before I have to cross my name off the list. @spectrum-officer-lt-green @captain-magenta-spectrum you two have scrubbed that song from the base, right? @spectrumsoverworkedcmo Keen to play this year? @angeldestiny @callsign-rhapsody @bluebostonian got your earplugs, just in case? @conrad-turner-cpt-black Joining in?
OOC:
Going to have to take a small hiatus, lads. Mental health must be taken care of.
I'm free.
Where are you?
Somewhere in Canada, I think, I'm going to need to check as to exactly where.
I'm still thinking some things through though. I'm not ready quite. I promise whatever I decide I will let you know.
But....!
...S.I.G. Waiting for your signal.
Conrad Turner took a moment to catch his breath, and then looked to see where the Mysterons had dropped him. His shoulders relaxed and he gave a tired chuckle. They had dropped him somewhere safe. A small and cozy and surprisingly well-stocked cabin somewhere in Canada; he'd never figured out exactly where in Canada but since he almost never left it using the door, he never put too much effort into it.
Right now, he still didn't feel like putting in the effort, but knew he would have to later.
If he wanted Spectrum to come and get him.
Which...
Which Conrad wasn't entirely certain if it was what he wanted.
Free.
The Mysterons had set him free.
What exactly did that mean?
Piranha chose that moment to nip his ear.
“All right, All right,” Conrad murmured fondly as he settled both kittens on the chair he left, “dinner time it is.”
Yes, very surprisingly well-stocked. Still he adored that Carlito and Piranha were making those strange happy noises kitten made as they ate.
“So what will we do now, Fuzzballs?” Conrad asked, “Stay here for a while? Find out where we are and tell Scarlet to let Spectrum come get us? Disappear? We could just disappear. I'm good at going unnoticed.”
“I don't think I can go back to Spectrum, not really,” He paced, “I probably do have brain damage; I would have never mentioned the off-the-books work I did for Colonel White otherwise. That was suppose to never be spoken of again, and I just tossed it out in a casual conversation. He's not going to be pleased. Well. He quite probably doesn't wish to see me again regardless. At least I can claim Spectrum's most spectacular fuck-up.”
Carlito looked up at him and murped, then jumped and climbed up to Conrad's shoulder, and settled to purr in his ear.
“My emotional control is shot, Carlito, beyond taking care of you and your sister, I can't be trusted to be responsible for anything; useless, pointless. Not to mention the physical damage I've sustained either from the Mysterons or from...” he sneered, “well, there are somethings I don't think Spectrum is aware of the World Government or its defensive branches doing.”
“Nonetheless, I'm not exactly stellar Spectrum Officer Material any mor...owww! Piranha!” Conrad hadn't noticed Piranha climbing up his other side, but she expressed her annoyance at his pity party in the only way she knew would get through to her big stupid human.
She bit his ear again.
Conrad closed his eyes. Purring in stereo.
“So, right, I need help. I hate help.”
“I really hate help.”
“Hate it with a passion.”
“I hate seeing the pity in their eyes.”
“There really isn't a choice, is there Fuzzballs?”
Conrad gently lifted his cats off his shoulders.
“I've got to figure out where we are, and then,” Conrad slumped, “contact Spectrum.”
~~~
A hour later, Conrad sent out:
"@cpt-scarlet-spectrum, This is Captain Black requesting Spectrum retrieval."
If the Officers Lounge carpet hadn't been industrial grade, Scarlet was pretty certain he'd have worn a hole in it by now with his pacing back and forth lile a panther in a cage.
Conrad was free.
Somehow, for some reason, the Mysterons had let him go. 'But for how long...' he couldn't help but wonder. 'Have they really cut him loose, or is this just another one of their tricks?'
He'd passed on the word to Colonel White as soon as he'd gotten it, and now they were waiting for whatever was to come next - be it the signal to come get him, a message to stay away... or for the trap to spring shut. Paul completed another circuit of the lounge, then stopped, rubbed both hands over his face and dropped himself into the nearest chair.
'Maybe... maybe the war is going to be over?' he asked himself. 'Maybe we've suffered enough? Maybe we've done enough penance?' He shook himself. 'Focus on now. What ifs and maybes are for later. If we do get him back, Fawn's going to want to do a full health check, White will need to debrief with him, heaven knows what the World President is going to do. The legalities...' he shook his head. 'That's going to be above my pay grade.'
Just as he was getting tempted to call Conrad himself, his radio beeped.
"This is Captain Black requesting Spectrum retrieval."
"S.I.G. We are enroute to you now." Scarlet was on his feet. @spectrum-officer-lt-green, "Green, I need you to trace that call I just got! @callsign-rhapsody @bluebostonian @captain-magenta-spectrum We need an SPJ and a team, @spectrumsoverworkedcmo Fawn, you coming?"
Dianne was used to being called to action at a moment's notice. But not quite like this.
As soon as she got the call through, she left the lounge, flight helmet in hand to run past the officer lounge.
She swung round the door, face set in a determined frown. She spotted Scarlet and stepped in. "What's happened?"
Pat had spent the past couple of hours in his quarters. He'd seen those first couple of messages that Conrad had posted, and the thought that he might actually be free? He really, truly hoped that it was real, but he had no idea what it might mean if it was.
Turning on his computer had meant to be a distraction, instead, by the time the call from Scarlet came through, he'd been staring at the monitors for a while, lost in thought, and it was the beeping of his radio that pulled him out of it.
Magenta grabbed his cap off his desk and moved quickly down the corridors, arriving at the officers lounge just behind Rhapsody, and he glances between her and Scarlet before he speaks. "Is this about what I think it's about?"
"Black says he's been set free by the Mysterons, he's somewhere in Canada waiting for pick up. Fawn's on the way to the hangar now," Scarlet quickly informs them. "I don't know if it's real or a trap, but one way or another, we're going to find out."
"Right, we need to put a team together and get moving as soon as we have his location. It shouldn't take Green long to pinpoint where Black is calling from." Magenta says as he stands a little straighter. Whatever happens with this, they need to act quickly. "Who are we taking with us?"
"Me, Fawn, and whoever else is ready and willing," Scarlet replies. "I want to take this at face value, but the last time we did that they almost blew up Cloudbase, so caution is the order of the day."
"Of course," Magenta nods. A repeat of last time would not be ideal. "We should get that SPJ ready to go, I can head down to the hangers and meet with Fawn. We need to be careful but we're also going to want to be off the deck as soon as we know where we're going." He turns to @callsign-rhapsody beside him. "The same for the Angels, I would think."
"angel escort is ready to scramble as an when you need it." Rhapsody then looks between them for a moment, a little shocked. "Do you think it's actually Conrad?"
"We'll find out when we get there," is all Scarlet is willing to say. "C'mon, we need to get going."
He doesn’t finish his sentence before Rhapsody is gone — practically sprinting toward the Angel Lounge.
Not because she’s eager.
Not because she’s hopeful.
Because the order to scramble hit too fast after the news.
Because everything about this feels wrong.
The corridor blurs around her. She’s already pulling on her helmet, already mentally running through pre-flight sequences, but her thoughts are louder than her boots on the deck.
This could be a Mysteron trick.
It fits too perfectly.
The idea of Conrad Turner suddenly being free?
After all this time?
After all the traps?
No.
The Mysterons don’t give gifts - they bait hooks.
She turns a corner sharply, nearly colliding with a passing technician. “Sorry,” she mutters automatically before pushing on. The Angel Lounge door is ahead, glowing warm amber, but tonight that warmth feels deceptive.
Inside, everything is ready - the others’ helmets lifted from their charging mounts, flight harnesses prepared, the soft hum of auto-checks running. The room is calm.
She isn’t.
What if this is exactly what they want?
To make Spectrum think Black is weakened, vulnerable.
To make Paul rush in.
To make them hesitate at the wrong moment.
To tear open old wounds and use them as entry points.
Her stomach twists.
She knows how the Mysterons operate:
They don’t just attack… they undermine.
And using Conrad…
Letting them believe he might be saved…
That would be the cruelest weapon of all.
Her jet is waiting - thirty seconds from launch - but her thoughts keep circling:
If this is a trap, they are flying straight into the jaws.
If it isn’t… then Conrad needs them.
Either way, she has no choice.
Rhapsody forces a breath, squares her shoulders, and heads for the tube lift to her Interceptor - fear sharp, heart pounding, mind whispering the one thing she cannot say aloud:
Please don’t let this be another Mysteron lie.
The SPJ carrying the officers (and what seems like half of Sickbay's supply cupboard) is in the air shortly after the Interceptor, Spectrum's equipment giving them course and heading.
The flight and landing are both textbook, as is the landing, collecting an SPV, and travelling deep into the Canadian back country to the fleck of civilisation that is the cabin.
And all of it is getting Scarlet's hackles up further and further.
This is going far too well, and he’s wound tighter than a watch spring when they finally arrive.
Magenta wants this to be real, he wants this to go well so that they can bring Conrad home. But he knows better than to get his hopes up. The Mysteron's are unpredictable and it wouldn't be the first time they've stumbled into a trap. Using Conrad as bait is despicable, but after everything they've faced before, it wouldn't be such a surprise either.
The tension in the SPV as they drive through the Canadian wilderness isn't helping his nerves, and he ends up idly fiddling with the gold chain he wears beneath his shirt and running his thumb over the smooth metal of the cross pendant. Simply needing something to do with his hands as the world passes by outside.
There's so many ways this could go, and so many of those possibilities are far from pleasant. They need to be ready for anything, just as they always do when Mysteron's could be involved. Letting his mind wander into what ifs won't help, but as that little cabin appears in the distance, it's difficult to stop it.
Whisper a prayer, hope for the best, and with a bit of luck, maybe, just maybe, this will go the way they want it to.
Or at least, that's what Magenta is silently wishing for as the SPV makes it to the cabin.
Scarlet pulls down his 'cap microphone and hits the buttons on the inside of the 'cap to both turn off his epauletts and set up a group call between everyone present, including Rhapsody. "I'll go first." Yes, it was predicable, but if this was a trap he had the best chance of surviving it. "@callsign-rhapsody, Rhapsody keep watching from above, @spectrumsoverworkedcmo, Fawn, you stick with Magenta, @captain-magenta-spectrum Mags, you watch my back. Let's go."
Once he's out, he waits for a moment- for movement, for noise, for anything untoward, for that nausea and headache in the presence of a Mysteron, and with his hand away from his pistol, he approaches the cabin, pauses again, makes sure he's offset from the door, and knocks twice. "Conrad?"
"S.I.G," Magenta says as he tucks his chain back under his shirt and follows Scarlet out of the SPV. There's nothing out here but the little cabin, if this is genuine then they really did leave Conrad in the middle of nowhere.
He keeps a couple of paces behind Scarlet as they approach the cabin, keeping an eye on Scarlet and Fawn whilst also watching their surroundings for the slightest sign of anything out of place. Movement, noise, anything that could alert them to an ambush, or a trap, or something else that could give away a Mysteron ploy.
The seconds tick by far too slowly after Scarlet knocks on the door, the quiet of the countryside almost deafening as they wait..
There were two knocks, and then:
“Conrad?”
He wanted to moved, he wanted to go open the door, and... there was small sharp pain in his ear.
“Piranha!” he chuckled, and his body unfroze. As he walked to the door, Carlito jumped and Conrad just barely caught him. Tucking him under his arm like an american football, he had to smile. He was about to face his past and his future, looking like a over-warmed zombie with one tiny black kitten riding imperiously on his shoulder, and completely brainless ginger kitten lolling over his arm, completely unarmed. At least, the aroma from the cabin once he opened the door would be good from all his anxiety cooking and baking.
He should check to be sure that it was who he wanted it to be behind the door.
Oh to hell with it.
“Paul?(@cpt-scarlet-spectrum)” Conrad called, “I'm opening door now. Please don't scare my cats.”
And he opened the door.
In quiet moments of contemplation, usually in the dead of the night when everyone else was asleep, Paul had occasionally let himself wonder 'what if?', asking himself what it would look like if or when they managed it, when they saved Conrad.
Two kittens and the smell of a bakery full swing had never entered his predictions.
"Conrad?" He asks, glancing over the other man's shoulder to spy out the interior of the cabin, testing his notoriously fickle sixth sense. He can't hope... its too dangerous, but maybe... maybe...
Conrad waited a moment, then wryly tapped his chest with his free hand.
“Conrad,” gestured with the arm draped with ginger kitten, “Carlito”, then reached up and patted the other kitten's head, “Piranha. And you're Paul, also known as Captain Scarlet of Spectrum.”
He should be taking this more seriously. Something was definitely broken in him. Conrad knew this was dangerous, but he just couldn't.... He was tired, and wanted to go home, even if home really didn't exist for him any more.
“Either we can invite everyone in and eat before we go, or we can pack up and take it with us,” Conrad said with a strained smile, “I'd rather not waste food. I think Pat (@captain-magenta-spectrum) would agree with me."
Magenta isn't sure what he was expecting to see when the door opened, but kittens and the smell of fresh cooking wasn't it. It smelled good too, if this was real then Conrad had clearly been busy whilst he waited.
Something in the back of his mind told him that this was too easy, but maybe, a situation could be as simple as it looked? Maybe...?
That was probably a dangerous thing to hope for, they still needed to be careful here, letting their guard down too soon was never a good idea.
Magenta takes a step closer, rather than staying a couple of paces behind Scarlet, and he briefly glances behind Conrad to look inside the cabin. "Definitely can't waste food," he says without really thinking about it, but wasting food was- well, pet peeve was probably the wrong term, but either way it's not something he liked to do. Right now though, they probably should be focusing on other things, and he looks over at Scarlet ( @cpt-scarlet-spectrum.) "What do you want to do?"
"Let Fawn @spectrumsoverworkedcmo at you first," Paul says to Conrad with a flicker of a wry smile. "You look like a stiff breeze would blow you over." The smile fades. "But do you have any idea of how or why?" he asks, making a vague gesture at their surroundings. "Why did they let you go?"
"A compromise as far as I can tell," Conrad sighed, he'd rather hoped they wouldn't jump immediately to the subject, but he also knew better, "This is extremely simplified, but the controlling faction made the concession of getting rid of the 'suddenly scary human agent' so the losing faction would stop trying to interfere in their re-evaluation of Earth in general and humanity in particular."
"Fawn @spectrumsoverworkedcmo can come do a once over, if you all would come in," Conrad's eyes slid to the little black fuzzball that was huddling against his neck, "this cold isn't good for kittens."
"...understood." Scarlet comes all the way in, beckoning for the other two to follow, and knowing that Rhapsody will be listening to every word thanks to the open link.
Magenta follows Scarlet inside. The warmth of the cabin is very welcome after being out in the cold. "Well, whatever you've been cooking certainly smells good, if nothing else," he says, offering Conrad an admittedly slightly cautious smile. He wants this to be real, he really does, but he knows that he can't let his guard down yet, just in case..
Paul shuts the door as soon as Fawn is inside, using the action to cover a soft 'acknowledged' to Rhapsody, still orbiting the cabin. "Conrad," he says as he turns back, "what do you mean by 'factions?' "
"Ah, yes, keep in mind is this a bit metaphorical," Conrad sat down at the table in the kitchen area, kittens taking their leave to investigate these new people, "The Mysterons are something of a hive mind, but also retain individuality. They're hard to describe but sentient, sapient computer programs is the closest. They evolved on Mars fairly quickly after the original, physical Mysterons left."
He paused for a moment, looking thoughtful.
"Or possibly fled, they're not clear about that themselves. Anyway, like our own computer programs they have generations, and for a very long time didn't need to upgrade. The group that dominated at the time we encountered them had been the primary movers of the collective for a long time"
Conrad stopped, a strange grim satisfaction carving his face.
"In a way the War of Nerves proved their undoing. They had to generate newer programs to create and control their reconstructions here on Earth and on the Moon. Those new programs outnumbered them quickly, and," he paused fainting smiling, "they were curious about this world they have been generated to destroy, and wisely allied with the oldest of the Mysteron programs who, having watched the Solar System, were never content with the idea of Humanity's destruction, but had been outnumbered for so long. United, they pushed their desire for a ceasefire to the fore. The one who wanted to destroy still have a say, but their position in the hive mind is weakened."
"I was freed as part of a compromise. Apparently, Carlito worried the more...conservative? Mysterons. They claim I retro-metabolised him," Conrad snorted, "Unlikely at best. But ultimately, it was a trade off, the scary human agent was freed before he figured out how to use more Mysteron powers, and the Ceasefire and re-evaluation would continue unhindered."
That... that was a lot to consider. That the Mysterons weren't as monolithic as they'd thought, that maybe they could be reasoned with, as long as they were speaking to the right ones... Paul turned that all over as he crouched and offered his hand to Carlito.
Carlito snuffled the proffered hand, and bumped his head his purr increasing in volume. This one was nice, not his human, but still nice. He leaned into the attention.
And stopped, nose wrinkling, fur rising.
"Merp?"
Carlito skittered away, and started to hiss.
"Carlito?" his human rumbled, "that's not nice, that's Paul. What...Oh No!"
Scarlet shoots to his feet and staggers back a step, one hand to his forehead as the familiar headache smacks him right behind the eyes. "They're--!" He flinches, tries to pull away from something.... and vanishes.
All Rhapsody could work out was Paul was audible on the group channel one second, then wasn't the next.
"Scarlet, are you receiving?"
She ignored any other chatter, hoping just to hear his voice. "Paul?!"
"Scarlet!" Magenta shouts as Scarlet staggers and vanishes before his eyes. "What the-" His hand drops to his pistol as he turns back to Conrad. He knew this felt too easy, that it couldn't be this simple! "Where is he? What did you do?" he asks, voice firm, needing to know what the hell is going on. Before adding quickly to update Rhapsody, "Scarlet's vanished."
After explaining the Mysteron situation to Scarlet, Conrad turned and let Dr. Fawn do what he did best. He eyed Magenta and the Mysteron detector, before he mumured:
“I think I can explain the heartbeat. The Mysterons had to retrometabolise parts of my heart after Blue got a good shot in,” he tried for humor in his eyes, “I'm probably going to look a bit of a patchwork to the detector.”
Conrad nodded warily at the mention of the psychological exam. It would a one way trip to a psychiatric facility after that. Hopefully one of ones where it passed as a “rest home” for “retired” intelligent agents. And it damn well better understand the cats were non-negotiable.
Then he noticed Carlito pull away from Scarlet and start to hiss. Corad would have expected that of Piranha, who he noted had retreated to a cushion atop the icebox, but Carlito?
“ Carlito?” he began to reach for the orange fluffball, “"that's not nice, that's Paul,” he felt a frisson skate down his back digging its blades deep, something was wrong, “What...Oh No!"
Moment was there struggling against the invisible, and then gone.
Conrad felt the bottom drop out of his stomach, and he scooped Carlito up off the floor.
He only half heard Magenta's words, but held his kitten against his chest as he met Magenta and Fawn @spectrumsoverworkedcmo with anguish.
“It wasn't me. I swear.”
"I really, really wish I could believe that," Magenta says, not taking his eyes off of Conrad, and taking note of his reaction to all of this. He looks just as surprised and troubled by it as the rest of them, and he wants it to be genuine, but he needs to be cautious and can't trust it so blindly. Especially not after what's already happened.
He keeps one hand on his pistol and pulls his cap mic down with the other. "Rhapsody ( @callsign-rhapsody ) what's your location? Scarlet's gone, it has to be the Mysteron's, some kind of trap that we walked straight into, and I don't trust that Black isn't involved, whether he knows it or not." He presses a button on the inside of his cap to connect the comm link through to Cloudbase as well. "Captain Magenta calling Cloudbase Control ( @spectrum-officer-lt-green ), Spectrum Is Red. Captain Scarlet is missing, suspected Mysteron involvement."
Rhapsody is barely listening.
She managed to set the jet down in a clearing, muttering to herself the entire time.
Of course this would happen.
Of course this was all too good to be true.
She reaches the cabin and practically kicks the door open, and stares at @conrad-turner-cpt-black . "You."
Of course, an enraged Rhapsody Angel. Conrad sincerely wondered if he had actually died and was now in Hell. It made perfect sense. He was close to at least getting a hint of what he wanted, and then it all goes tits up in an instant. Sounded like Hell to him. Would it be a lather, rinse, repeat Hell, or a slowly rising, never stopping, just getting worse and worse, even thought it seemed impossible that it could get worse, Hell?
'I should have just kept my mouth shut,' he mourned, 'it wouldn't have been so bad living here with the fuzzballs.'
"You know," he said conversationally, feeling tears he didn't even try to stop in his eyes, "if it wouldn't mean Carlito would be vivisected and Piranha being flat out killed, I'd let you shoot me right now."
Rhapsody stalks forward, fire behind her eyes. Her boots click over the wooden floor, each step faster than the last, shoulders tight, breath sharp with fury she can barely contain. She doesn’t see Conrad clearly on the brink, only a wavering silhouette against the drop, a ghost half-drowned in misery. All she sees, all she can feel, is the absence of Paul like a missing limb, a hollow ache gnawing at her ribs.
Her vision tunnels.
Her pulse spikes.
The world narrows to the shape of the man who once was their friend, now perched on the edge like a condemned shadow.
"Enough of the self-pity," her voice cracks like a whip, low and trembling with the pressure of everything she refuses to let herself fear "where is Paul? What have you done with him?"
I'm free.

"You."

~~~
A hour later, Conrad sent out:
"@cpt-scarlet-spectrum, This is Captain Black requesting Spectrum retrieval."
If the Officers Lounge carpet hadn't been industrial grade, Scarlet was pretty certain he'd have worn a hole in it by now with his pacing back and forth lile a panther in a cage.
Conrad was free.
Somehow, for some reason, the Mysterons had let him go. 'But for how long...' he couldn't help but wonder. 'Have they really cut him loose, or is this just another one of their tricks?'
He'd passed on the word to Colonel White as soon as he'd gotten it, and now they were waiting for whatever was to come next - be it the signal to come get him, a message to stay away... or for the trap to spring shut. Paul completed another circuit of the lounge, then stopped, rubbed both hands over his face and dropped himself into the nearest chair.
'Maybe... maybe the war is going to be over?' he asked himself. 'Maybe we've suffered enough? Maybe we've done enough penance?' He shook himself. 'Focus on now. What ifs and maybes are for later. If we do get him back, Fawn's going to want to do a full health check, White will need to debrief with him, heaven knows what the World President is going to do. The legalities...' he shook his head. 'That's going to be above my pay grade.'
Just as he was getting tempted to call Conrad himself, his radio beeped.
"This is Captain Black requesting Spectrum retrieval."
"S.I.G. We are enroute to you now." Scarlet was on his feet. @spectrum-officer-lt-green, "Green, I need you to trace that call I just got! @callsign-rhapsody @bluebostonian @captain-magenta-spectrum We need an SPJ and a team, @spectrumsoverworkedcmo Fawn, you coming?"
Dianne was used to being called to action at a moment's notice. But not quite like this.
As soon as she got the call through, she left the lounge, flight helmet in hand to run past the officer lounge.
She swung round the door, face set in a determined frown. She spotted Scarlet and stepped in. "What's happened?"
Pat had spent the past couple of hours in his quarters. He'd seen those first couple of messages that Conrad had posted, and the thought that he might actually be free? He really, truly hoped that it was real, but he had no idea what it might mean if it was.
Turning on his computer had meant to be a distraction, instead, by the time the call from Scarlet came through, he'd been staring at the monitors for a while, lost in thought, and it was the beeping of his radio that pulled him out of it.
"A compromise as far as I can tell," Conrad sighed, he'd rather hoped they wouldn't jump immediately to the subject, but he also knew better, "This is extremely simplified, but the controlling faction made the concession of getting rid of the 'suddenly scary human agent' so the losing faction would stop trying to interfere in their re-evaluation of Earth in general and humanity in particular."
"Fawn @spectrumsoverworkedcmo can come do a once over, if you all would come in," Conrad's eyes slid to the little black fuzzball that was huddling against his neck, "this cold isn't good for kittens."
"...understood." Scarlet comes all the way in, beckoning for the other two to follow, and knowing that Rhapsody will be listening to every word thanks to the open link.
Magenta follows Scarlet inside. The warmth of the cabin is very welcome after being out in the cold. "Well, whatever you've been cooking certainly smells good, if nothing else," he says, offering Conrad an admittedly slightly cautious smile. He wants this to be real, he really does, but he knows that he can't let his guard down yet, just in case..
Paul shuts the door as soon as Fawn is inside, using the action to cover a soft 'acknowledged' to Rhapsody, still orbiting the cabin. "Conrad," he says as he turns back, "what do you mean by 'factions?' "
"Ah, yes, keep in mind is this a bit metaphorical," Conrad sat down at the table in the kitchen area, kittens taking their leave to investigate these new people, "The Mysterons are something of a hive mind, but also retain individuality. They're hard to describe but sentient, sapient computer programs is the closest. They evolved on Mars fairly quickly after the original, physical Mysterons left."
He paused for a moment, looking thoughtful.
"Or possibly fled, they're not clear about that themselves. Anyway, like our own computer programs they have generations, and for a very long time didn't need to upgrade. The group that dominated at the time we encountered them had been the primary movers of the collective for a long time"
Conrad stopped, a strange grim satisfaction carving his face.
"In a way the War of Nerves proved their undoing. They had to generate newer programs to create and control their reconstructions here on Earth and on the Moon. Those new programs outnumbered them quickly, and," he paused fainting smiling, "they were curious about this world they have been generated to destroy, and wisely allied with the oldest of the Mysteron programs who, having watched the Solar System, were never content with the idea of Humanity's destruction, but had been outnumbered for so long. United, they pushed their desire for a ceasefire to the fore. The one who wanted to destroy still have a say, but their position in the hive mind is weakened."
"I was freed as part of a compromise. Apparently, Carlito worried the more...conservative? Mysterons. They claim I retro-metabolised him," Conrad snorted, "Unlikely at best. But ultimately, it was a trade off, the scary human agent was freed before he figured out how to use more Mysteron powers, and the Ceasefire and re-evaluation would continue unhindered."
That... that was a lot to consider. That the Mysterons weren't as monolithic as they'd thought, that maybe they could be reasoned with, as long as they were speaking to the right ones... Paul turned that all over as he crouched and offered his hand to Carlito.
Carlito snuffled the proffered hand, and bumped his head his purr increasing in volume. This one was nice, not his human, but still nice. He leaned into the attention.
And stopped, nose wrinkling, fur rising.
"Merp?"
Carlito skittered away, and started to hiss.
"Carlito?" his human rumbled, "that's not nice, that's Paul. What...Oh No!"
Scarlet shoots to his feet and staggers back a step, one hand to his forehead as the familiar headache smacks him right behind the eyes. "They're--!" He flinches, tries to pull away from something.... and vanishes.
All Rhapsody could work out was Paul was audible on the group channel one second, then wasn't the next.
"Scarlet, are you receiving?"
She ignored any other chatter, hoping just to hear his voice. "Paul?!"
"Scarlet!" Magenta shouts as Scarlet staggers and vanishes before his eyes. "What the-" His hand drops to his pistol as he turns back to Conrad. He knew this felt too easy, that it couldn't be this simple! "Where is he? What did you do?" he asks, voice firm, needing to know what the hell is going on. Before adding quickly to update Rhapsody, "Scarlet's vanished."
Rhapsody was already on a controlled descent, activating the VTOL thrusters of her interceptor.
"I knew it. I bloody knew it-"
I'm free.
Where are you?
Somewhere in Canada, I think, I'm going to need to check as to exactly where.
I'm still thinking some things through though. I'm not ready quite. I promise whatever I decide I will let you know.
But....!
...S.I.G. Waiting for your signal.
Conrad Turner took a moment to catch his breath, and then looked to see where the Mysterons had dropped him. His shoulders relaxed and he gave a tired chuckle. They had dropped him somewhere safe. A small and cozy and surprisingly well-stocked cabin somewhere in Canada; he'd never figured out exactly where in Canada but since he almost never left it using the door, he never put too much effort into it.
Right now, he still didn't feel like putting in the effort, but knew he would have to later.
If he wanted Spectrum to come and get him.
Which...
Which Conrad wasn't entirely certain if it was what he wanted.
Free.
The Mysterons had set him free.
What exactly did that mean?
Piranha chose that moment to nip his ear.
“All right, All right,” Conrad murmured fondly as he settled both kittens on the chair he left, “dinner time it is.”
Yes, very surprisingly well-stocked. Still he adored that Carlito and Piranha were making those strange happy noises kitten made as they ate.
“So what will we do now, Fuzzballs?” Conrad asked, “Stay here for a while? Find out where we are and tell Scarlet to let Spectrum come get us? Disappear? We could just disappear. I'm good at going unnoticed.”
“I don't think I can go back to Spectrum, not really,” He paced, “I probably do have brain damage; I would have never mentioned the off-the-books work I did for Colonel White otherwise. That was suppose to never be spoken of again, and I just tossed it out in a casual conversation. He's not going to be pleased. Well. He quite probably doesn't wish to see me again regardless. At least I can claim Spectrum's most spectacular fuck-up.”
Carlito looked up at him and murped, then jumped and climbed up to Conrad's shoulder, and settled to purr in his ear.
“My emotional control is shot, Carlito, beyond taking care of you and your sister, I can't be trusted to be responsible for anything; useless, pointless. Not to mention the physical damage I've sustained either from the Mysterons or from...” he sneered, “well, there are somethings I don't think Spectrum is aware of the World Government or its defensive branches doing.”
“Nonetheless, I'm not exactly stellar Spectrum Officer Material any mor...owww! Piranha!” Conrad hadn't noticed Piranha climbing up his other side, but she expressed her annoyance at his pity party in the only way she knew would get through to her big stupid human.
She bit his ear again.
Conrad closed his eyes. Purring in stereo.
“So, right, I need help. I hate help.”
“I really hate help.”
“Hate it with a passion.”
“I hate seeing the pity in their eyes.”
“There really isn't a choice, is there Fuzzballs?”
Conrad gently lifted his cats off his shoulders.
“I've got to figure out where we are, and then,” Conrad slumped, “contact Spectrum.”
~~~
