i wanted to make some new shirts for my villagers to wear and i thought what could possibly be cuter than them running around in these!! 

I had just finished packing my duffel bag and slung it over my shoulder as I made my way down the stairs.

“Hey, Bells.” Charlie grinned at me as he walked out of the kitchen. “You excited for tonight?”

“Yeah, I think so.” I shrugged. “Jake said he slept 14 hours last night so he won’t fall asleep.”

I could tell Charlie was overeager for me to spend time with Jake, but I couldn’t blame him. I’d been a total zombie for the last few months, and I owed it to him to try to get better.

“Well, tell Billy I expect the full report this weekend when we go fishing.”

“I will, dad.” I started towards the door. “Try not to stay up too late.”

As soon as I shut the door, I felt guilty. Should I have gotten his hopes up so high? I knew Jake made me feel better, but... maybe staying up all night was a bad idea. Not that I could let myself fall asleep, either. I couldn’t let Jake know how badly I was hurting. He deserved better. I couldn’t bring down my sun.

I shook my head to clear my thoughts and threw my bag in the truck. Forget it. I made a plan and I was sticking to it.

The drive over was shorter than I expected. I guess I had taken that route quite a few times by now.

Jake ran up to the truck and opened the door. “You ready?” He grinned.

“I guess so.” I slipped while stepping out of the truck, but Jacob caught me. As was usual.

“You’re not getting sleepy yet, are you?” he teased.

“Hmmm, I think I might be... Ohhh, nooo!” I pretended to yawn and let my eyes start to droop.

Jacob laughed like it was the funniest thing he’d ever heard. “Come on, let’s go inside! I’ve got energy drinks and soda, or even milk, if you’re feeling wimpy.”

“Oh, I’m ready for the tough stuff. I’ll take a soda.” I found myself starting to smile.

We spent most of the night playing board games and filling ourselves with caffeine. Jake downed two Red Bulls within an hour and I managed to get down one warm soda. He’d offered it to me cold, but I’d gotten used to drinking warm soda in the shed.

Eventually, Billy went to bed and we went outside to look at the stars. I spread out an old blanket on the grass before we sat down. It was something Renee had made for me once, when she thought she’d be into knitting. It wasn’t the most well-made blanket, it had a few ends coming undone, but it reminded me of home. Phoenix. The warm air, sunshine...

“I’m actually a constellation expert, you know.” Jake grinned at me.

“Oh, really?” I said, snapping back to the present.

“Yeah.” His grin didn’t fade. He pointed to the sky. “See that one?”

I moved closer to see where he pointed. “Mmhmm.”

He adjusted his voice to sound lower and more sophisticated, like a host at a planetarium. “That one... is called The Giraffe With An Earring.”

“Ah, is it?” I smiled, mimicking his voice. “Well, that one...” I gestured to the other side of the sky. “...is called The Terminator.”

“Oh, no, no!” He stopped me. “You must be mistaken! That’s The Salamander King!”

“Ah, but that’s where you’re wrong, you see! It’s called The Terminator because even though he disappears in the daytime...” I leaned in. Jacob was hanging on my every word. I lowered my voice as deep as I could. “He’ll be back.”

We laughed so hard we couldn’t contain it, and I fell over onto the wet grass. Jake was wiping tears from his eyes. Whether it was really that funny, or we were just loopy from lack of sleep, I couldn’t tell. I let myself lie on the grass for a while until we settled down. I sighed. I hadn’t laughed like that since... Well, I didn’t know when.

“I’m really glad we did this, Bella.” He laid down on the grass next to me. “It’s nice having you around.”

“You too,” I said, staring at the sky. “I think I needed this.”

Jake didn’t say anything after that. He probably thought the same thing I did before I left, that maybe this would’ve been a bad idea. That maybe I would’ve been... Well, not well. But tonight had really been everything I needed.

Piers @ing the police because he was…misgendered? He tries to make fun of trans people by don’t things trans people don’t did and honestly is out here making “did you just assume my gender” jokes still.
