“Your total is $3.98.”

The cashier stood there and stared at me with an impatient glare as I rummaged through my purse.

My heart was starting to race from embarrassment as the people in line behind me started tapping their feet and fidgeting as they grew impatient.

Flustered, I looked at the cashier girl and admitted with defeat, “I’m sorry, I seem to have lost my wallet.”

Just as the cashier was about to make a (probably rude) comment, a boy with blond hair pushed through the line of waiting customers and met me at the front.

He dug out the perfect amount of cash to cover my bill and slid it across the counter.

“I’ve got it covered.” He turned and smiled at me as the girl practically shoved the coffee into my hands to get me out of line.

“Now c'mon.” His hand grasped my coffee free arm and pulled me swiftly out of the shop and onto the sidewalk.

As the door closed behind me, I paused as the boy kept walking until he turned and realized I had stopped.

“What’s the matter?”

“Nothing. Its just that…”

“What?”

“Do I know you?”

He looked at the ground and smiled before walking back towards me.

“No I don’t think so.” He half laughed.

“Well…then why did you do that for me?”

Still smiling, he walked right next to me and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. He had a good six inches on me so I had to tilt my head back to get a good look at him when he spoke.

“Let’s just say…” He started as he forced us both forward, “I like to do good things for people, that’s how you make real friends. And turn strangers into…well…not strangers… Take the two of us for example, if I wouldn’t have been willing to give up my coffee money, you would have never gotten your drink, and you and I would have never met. That should prove that I like to make friends in the most unlikely of situations.”

“Oh…so we’re friends now? I don’t even know your name.”

“And nor do I know yours, but that is the fun of making friends my dear. So I guess I’ll start. My name is Seungcheol, but you can call me S. Coups.”

“Cecily.”

“Well it is a pleasure to meet you, my friend.”

This was by far the most interesting morning I have had in a long time…

“Same to you.”

“So…Cecily. What do you want to do?”

“Like, together?”

“Well yeah, that’s what friends do. And like it or not, you owe me now. I just paid for our friendship. It may only be worth three dollars and ninety-eight cents, but I still paid for it. And just because our friendship is cheap doesn’t mean it isn’t going to endure and become very worthwhile.”

Where do you find people like this kid. Oh my gosh. I didn’t know if I wanted to hug him, laugh my butt off, or punch him…

Definitely a bit of each.

“Cecily, you still didn’t answer my question. What do you want to do today? We could go to the park, or go to the movies, or you could come over to my house.”

I looked up at the darkening sky as I thought over the given options.

“Well…considering the fact that I don’t have any money I’m going to say no to the movies, and I’m also thinking that the park would be a bad idea because it looks like its going to rain…but-”

“My house it is! You’re going to love it!”

He was only a complete stranger who bought me coffee, what could go wrong?
