BIOGRAPHY !
Calvin Horowitz was born to two archeologists, which meant they travelled a lot when Cal was a child. As a kid, Cal got to visit all over the place, from Rome to South Africa, but when Cal was five, their parents decided they probably could benefit from settling down in one place, so they shipped their child off to live with his aunt in the states. Since his parents didn't really get a lot of time, most of their communication was done through an occasional video call and the post cards they sent from various places they've ever lived. While they did not have the most ideal relationship, Cal eventually really liked living in one place, even if they didn't always get along with their aunt. Being in Aurora Bay was probably the best thing for him.
Their relationship with his aunt was nothing if not complicated. Clearly she didn't want to bear the responsibility of raising a child that wasn't hers. She constantly fought with her sister on the phone when she thought Calvin couldn't hear her, but he did hear some of them. It was her fault, they knew. Cal threw themselves into activities that would keep them out of their house so they wouldn't be a burden on their aunt. They tried everything from soccer, like so many other kids their age. But Cal fell in love with theatre. They signed up for just about every local show they were able to and their relationship from their aunt somewhat changed when she realized she could capitalize on Cal's talent.
One one of the worst arguments Cal got into with their parents was when they had major role in a musical and their parents promised to come. When they didn't show, Cal got really upset and accused their parents about now caring about him. Two days later, both parents died in an accident and Cal never really forgave himself for their argument, even though it wasn't his fault. Especially since a few weeks after the accident, Cal got callback from an audition he'd done while he and his aunt were in New York City. Despite the guilt, Cal's aunt didn't stop them from booking the role. Cal and his aunt traded their Aurora Bay life to one in New York City.
Suddenly Cal's life was rehearsals and trying on costumes. Their first role was a hit and the director, a young up and coming playwright had the perfect role for Cal. His aunt let him drop out of the school he'd been attending in New York to be tutored like other child actors didl. They moved from their smaller apartment to a bigger one in New York City. Their love of theatre only grew, even if it was a tough field. They started to become more popular, booking bigger roles. It seemed like everything was in place for Cal to succeed in the Broadway scene.
For Cal, school was always a struggle. He wasn't academic in nature, despite everyone's attempt for him to have a proper education. He was often called out by his tutors for not paying attention and constantly being a distraction. Acting was the only place they ever felt like they belonged, so that's where they put all their effort. Singing lessons, dance lessons, costume fittings, and rehearsals. Time was flying and moving slow at the same time. Cal's aunt was proud of them, but somehow they knew their parents wouldn't be proud. So they pushed themself to do better and be better: both in academics and on the stage. A week before Cal turned seventeen, their aunt decided it was time for her to go back home. She left a three weeks later, believing that Cal could take care of himself.
Since his aunt left, Cal felt pressure being on his own and started on a downward spiral with drugs and partying. Skip forward and a few years later, Cal broke away from musicals to star in their first play. The director was someone who had worked with them before and Cal was excited for a change from musicals. They began to feel the pressure from everyone around them. Their reputation was not the greatest after it was leaked that they'd been having an affair with the director they were currently working on. Cal's career was beginning to feel like it had peaked when they were younger — at least to them. On the opening night of the play, Cal was so drunk they ended up falling off the stage and subsequently being fired from the show. Cal stayed in New York City for a little bit longer, but it seemed like suddenly most people didn't want to work with them — and when he got the call that his aunt was dealing with some medical issues, he decided to go home, officially leaving the Broadway scene. Tabloids long suspected he suffered from child actor syndrome, but his agent maintained that Cal just needed a break.

"You're telling me you played Puck and you still managed to walk away without any kind of appreciation for Shakespeare?" Demi mourns before their ultimate answer makes her blood pressure raise even more.
She does her best to not let it show.
"And what is it about Beetlejuice that attracts you?"
"I'm telling you just that. I fell off the stage. It wasn't a good time." It was the first play they'd ever done and the last one Cal ever expected to do. Cal really thought that most people who put Shakespeare plays on didn't have anything to add to the conversation.
"I donno. I guess it's a fun show and I relate to Lydia. But also I had a friend that did that show and the costumes and makeup were so much fun. I mean put on whatever show you want. You could put on Mamma Mia!, cast me as Sophie."
"Ew, really?" Sage wrinkled her nose at the thought of it but it did seem logical. Besides, mud baths kind of sounded a bit gross anyway. "I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe themselves as a fish before. But I guess fish don't have it so bad if they're in a fishbowl. Free food, cute little castles to hide in... living the dream."
"Yeah, but like the still feel good and the nutrients in the mud work," Cal let out a little shrug. "Besides, whoever told me could have been lying. I don't know. I believe anything." He wouldn't do his own research on something that didn't matter. "No exactly. Especially ones that like get hunted in the wild. Sitting in a fishbowl seems like a nice deal. As long as someone isn't tapping on the glass."
He nodded slowly, not sure how to respond to that. Colton was never exactly used as the bright example unless his work was talked about and still, he always paled compared to Ashton. So yeah, no, he was in no place to give advice.
"Nothing's interested me enough, I guess." Colton chuckled. Listening to Cal though, he blew out a whistle. "Yeah no..they never leave." Colton sighed. He'd been there, chasing after the girl who went and had some other guy's baby but still acted like there was hope for them. No, they never leave. The maid came out to find them, said the rest of the guests are there. "Come on, let me introduce you." || @calhorowitz
"Nothing? That seems unlikely." Cal was not sure if he believed that. Unless someone wasn't looking, there were always interesting options out there. "They never leave," he echoed. Career wise, his life was not going the right way, romantic wise, their life was somehow worse. Cal had every reason to hide out in Aurora Bay for the rest of their life. "Alright, yeah. Let me go meet some new people and try not to feel terrible about myself."

Where: Any bar of choice, for those not attending Prom or left early
Jude didn't have any incentive to go the events nowadays since he was single again, she was the only reason he ever went. Either to get her attention or just to spend time her. This time round, Jude finds himself at a random bar, much quieter than usual. He liked it this way, usually avoiding the popular places that left him unable to hear himself think. It took almost half an hour for that silence to briefly be broken by the movements of another bar stool skidding against the floor, and a voice asking if the seat next to him was taken. Jude nods, with a latent motion of his hand, "Uh, yeah. S'open."
The prom had been a bad idea and he'd known it the second he stepped into the gym, but Cal had stuck around for a bit to try and have fun. However, it was only a few hours into the event that he decided it was not worth his time. He liked Aurora Bay, but he'd never attended the school and he'd made damn sure to keep himself distanced from most people. The bar stool scraping against the floor made him jump. It was louder than it normally would have been. "Sorry. I picked one a few over so the bartender wouldn't have to do more work, but... there's like no one here." Cal sat in the seat and ordered a drink.

It was curiosity more than anything that brought her here--well, that, and the fact that Gianna had begged her and pouted until she caved, her parents even offering to babysit Mireya's little brother so she could go without worry. So here she was, wearing a fancy dress and actually putting in effort into her appearance for the first time in a long while and...well, feeling pretty. Feeling good, something she hadn't truly, fully felt in quite some time. But, she was also feeling a bit out of place, so she quickly was about to be onto her second glass of champagne when someone quite forcefully smacked right into her and she let out a little yelp, her drink sloshing over herself and someone else- along with the domino affect of stumbling into the same poor victim.
“Shit, I’m sorry. Are you okay?” God she hoped she wasn’t about to get yelled at or threatened to be sued or something equally as ridiculous (but right up the alley for rich douches) just because of a bump and a potentially-ruined outfit.
Fancy events were something that Cal loved in a past life—they were fine here in Aurora Bay, but they were different. Everything here felt small town and less big. Putting on fancy clothing and parading around New York felt like a past life. It had been so long since he'd been able to do something like that. And now here he was in Aurora Bay, trying his best to fit in and feel like he belonged when his whole life was back in New York, but it was a twisted, terrible life that made him be someone he didn't like being. His aunt told him if he didn't go, he was going to wear a hole in her floor. So she'd forced him to get something together and go to the prom at the high school he'd never actually attended.
"Hm, yeah. That's par for the course at these things." Old Cal would have thrown a fit over it. "Don't worry I didn't wear anything I didn't care for getting messed up."
"I give up." he threw his hands in the air. "I don't know... What makes you happy? Something you can do here though." he asked leaning forward, elbows now on his knees.
"Yeah, no thanks. Tried it once, it didn't work out..it was enough to convince me I'm not that guy." he said in a flippant tone. "It's not." Colton agreed. "Awful feeling. Metaphorically of course..but awful. Nasty." he said in a tone that screamed disgust. But Cal was young..there was still hope their luck would be better. || @calhorowitz
"That's okay because I really don't know either. There's a ton of feelings that I just don't want to feel anymore and I guess that's okay. But it sucks." Cal knew they were frustrating because it was frustrating to think about a future where this is all they did for the rest of their life. At least Cal had been resourceful with his money.
"Scared of trying something new? Not everything will turn out bad you know." Cal personally was not very good at flirting either. "Honestly, I get that. The last relationship I had wasn't any good yet I convinced myself he'd leave his wife and kids for me. It sucks when I knew that was never going to happen and I believed it anyways." Cal did not like talking about this.
"That's kind of fucked up..." he chuckled but kept listening. "Teach someone how to do that maybe?" Colton asked. His father once told him that those who can't do, teach but..fuck that. Sometimes teaching someone to do what you love so they can love it too is a lot better. Not that he'd know but..ideas, you know.
"That's a good one..." Colton laughed. Full blown, head thrown back, straight from the heart kind of laugh. He was..not the settling down type. Not anymore. "I did once." he said simply with a shrug. "Not sure anymore. I don't think anyone knows till it hits them. On the head. With a sledgehammer." yes, yes..that seemed like a fitting way to describe it. || @calhorowitz
"There's a lot of fucked up things in the world. My life is not one of them." Cal's life was a problem of his own making and that sucked for him. "Oh, hell no. I don't think I'd have near enough patience to teach." He had thought about it once. Cal thought about going to college. Teaching and learning weren't his thing.
"Well, I mean... I don't know if that's true. Like I think I'd rather just not, you know. But I think you should try if that's what you want." Flirting was easier for them. Cal really liked being in control and he didn't like the idea of being out of control in a relationship. "I'd rather think a sledgehammer wouldn't be fun to be hit with."
Cal knew that his exit from New York was kind of dead of night, sneaking out. No one cared that he was in Aurora Bay though. "Oh, that's cool. Strange that both of us have family here. Are you sticking around for a while or do you think you'll go back soon?"
"Quite the coincidence, huh." It was a bit silly to think about it, but sometimes she wondered if fate was a real thing. Being reunited with her friend, did it mean anything?
"Oh, I'm planning on staying for a long while. I'd just gotten back from New York a few weeks ago. I was doing a show and came back as soon as it was over. I just want to spend time getting to know my family here. What have you been up to while you're here? I mean, do you live here year 'round or is this more like a summer time residency." Hannah let out a little laugh, feeling silly for even asking.
Cal didn't know if he believed in coincidences, but he didn't say that out loud. There was a reason for this and he just hadn't figured it out yet. "I guess so," he settled on, feeling a bit strange about the situation, but they didn't know if they wanted to ask more or let it be.
They nodded. He didn't know how he felt about that. Any reminder of old felt a lot right now and he was wary of it regardless. "That makes sense. It's nice enough around here." Cal wouldn't say he hated Aurora Bay—he did really enjoy his time here. "Oh, no. I'm here for a while. I need to help my aunt." They wouldn't elaborate on that. She was sick and he was trying to help.

"These dresses are outstanding," Aylin comments as she grabs yet another drink off a nearby tray. "Don't you think? I could see some of these at the Met Ball, I swear."
"They are really something," he agreed, looking around the room. There were some really amazing dresses and outfits tonight in general. "People really went all out that's for sure." Cal had found something in his closet. "Some of them I totally could see," they nodded.
"Oh, I don't know. It's difficult to pin one as prettier than another."

Hannah wasn't sure if she wanted to tell him everything, but it would be the truth so she figured it couldn't hurt too bad... right? "Uh, yeah.. It is really weird to even be here, especially long term. My father actually lives here, and I moved to meet him."
Cal knew that his exit from New York was kind of dead of night, sneaking out. No one cared that he was in Aurora Bay though. "Oh, that's cool. Strange that both of us have family here. Are you sticking around for a while or do you think you'll go back soon?"
Colton chuckled. He could relate to a certain extend to that. Here nobody cared just how much money he had, women weren't lining up for a chance to have their picture taken next to him. "Do you...like the Aurora Bay version of you?" he asked cautiously though.
"Hey, I'll always drink to that." he grinned. "Here? Nothing really, the Aurora Bay version of me" Colton said pointedly "is a pretty chill guy." he shrugged. "In New York, I was..." manwhore would be a great description "well, a little all over the place, people loved talking about how I hadn't settled down yet" he said with distaste "and who would the next girl be..but at least the papers said I'm good at my job too." he chuckled. || @calhorowitz
"I don't like any version of me. Aurora Bay version of me is that nice Jewish boy and that's it." Well that probably wasn't true. "Plus I'm like unemployed here. I have no talent for anything outside singing and dancing. But I like, you know don't wanna complain." Both versions at least cared about his aunt.
"The Aurora Bay version of you seems like a chill guy. Which is cool. You know, like there's worse things to be." Cal was decidedly not a chill person anytime. "Do you even want to settle down? I don't know that I want that personally. So it's fine if you didn't. The pressure to find someone is a lot all the time."
"And I can't say I ever partied." She countered with a soft laugh, smiling at him all the while, "It's also been incredibly rude of me to carry on this conversation without an introduction so hello! I'm Emerson." She was smiling still as she said it (albeit now a little more bashful) as she held her hand out in greeting before continuing on towards the coffee shop, "And I'll be all too happy to get a fellow coffee-lover their caffeine fix."
"That's fair. Partying was too much anyways. I really don't know what I did that," he admitted. They knew partying was a bad habit and that ended up leading to a terrible life in New York. Still. "Oh, no it's fine. I do that all the time. I'm Cal. Nice to meet you Emerson." Really there were people that lived in NYC that had no idea who he was. Although most people probably still recognized his name from the tabloids. "People who aren't coffee lovers are honestly weird. Tea drinkers are valid."
"Maybe! And if you ever frequented the NYU library or the Starbucks by Washington Square Park you probably would've seen me with my nose stuck in a book." Emerson laughed as she thought back to when she was in school, a soft, almost-wistful smile on her face. "The quiet is what always brought me back here. That, and the fact that it's home." Even four years in Manhattan couldn't change that. "The coffee is definitely on me, I'm heading that way anyways. Come on."
Cal constantly felt like he was in fight or flight whenever he was speaking to someone who used to live in New York. Who knows what kind of opinion they'd have about him, if they knew who he was, or if they had no idea who he was. "I can't say I was ever at NYU except maybe when I was like young and partied with some of my coworkers," they shrugged. "But maybe Starbucks. Being out too often and having long workdays... well coffee was always necessary." And they probably spent a huge chunk of their money on coffee. "Ah, yeah, I guess it is quiet here." He nodded.
Colton laughed. "Now..that's not a good thing to relate to." he chuckled, though he felt a little for Cal. "Shit happens, you know..but hey, your reputation's safe with me." he simply said instead hands held up in mock surrender.
He shrugged lightly, leaning back in his seat with amusement. "But hey, if people are going to..I don't know, butt into your business and talk..you might as well give them something good to talk about." he chuckled. || @calhorowitz
"I have no reputation here." Which was only somewhat true. He cared for his aunt and was a nice to everyone in town, even when he was a bit bratty. Hell, Cal even took their faith seriously. "Everyone sees the Aurora Bay version of me," they shrug. And that was how he wanted to keep it.
"People can talk about me if they want. I'd be flattered. Everyone knows that I'm young and hot. They can talk about that. Or google me and know the kind of person I am." Cal shrugged, not caring. "What do people say about you?"

"I mean there are mud baths in spas so there's gotta be something nice to it." Sage shrugged her shoulders. "I feel like I have more of a dog personality, just happy and wanting to make friends and all." Sage laughed. "I mean, I guess you're right. It'd just be nice to not be so stressed sometimes."
"Someone once told me that spa mud baths are scams. Your skin only feels super smooth after them because the silt gets in your pores and then when you shower it all washes away. Donno if that's true, but the person that told me that is smarter than me." Cal frowned as they spoke. "Well everyone needs those people in their lives. Maybe I'm less of a cat and more of a fish. Pretty on display, but you can't take it out to play with it." Cal let out a laugh of his own. "Yeah, exactly. Just for a day, no stress."
"Some of the people in our group today care way too much about their reputations." he chuckled. Colton himself was a shitshow half of the time back then; dating starlets, partying like there's no tomorrow..yet his reputation had remained intact. Pretty privilege combined with generational wealth? Maybe. "That's presumptuous." he huffed at the mention of people's idea of theater kids. "It can be like that I guess... World's not as emotionally evolved and fair as it should be yet." || @calhorowitz
"Damn why don't you just say you're talking about me." He did care about his reputation. That's the only thing Cal cared about. It's why he came back to Aurora Bay in the first place. His reputation wasn't sparkling clean anymore—not that it ever had been. They cared about partying more than their actual job... which wasn't a bad thing. "Yeah, well, I personally reveled in the presumptions." Probably because they actually were gay. "It's not evolved at all."
