Demi Chu was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska and was the daughter of two high school educators -- algebra and history, respectively. While Demi was always a successful child academically (as if there was much of a choice), she found her passion to be more in the direction of the arts.
She loved to be the center of attention, drawing the eyes of a room to herself and commanding the space. First she thought that passion would lead her to the stage -- she took the lead in every school play that the town had to offer and even had her mother driving her back and forth to community theatres in a three county radius as well.
While her parents pushed her to study tech, Demi ended up with a scholarship to the Yale School of Drama. While she had every intention of being an actress, her freshman year at the school was discouraging and she quickly got the impression that she was the little fish in a big pond. However, it was in a directing class her sophomore year that Demi discovered where she really shined. She liked to be the leader, in charge of the vision of the production and the creative control. She’d always liked to have things ‘just so’, and her eye for detail worked greatly in her favor.
Degree and a portfolio of connections in hand, Demi made her way to New York after graduation and hit the ground running taking any backstage work she could find.
In her thirties, Demi found herself directing an Off Off Broadway production of Jennifers Body: The Musical. It quickly became an underground cult classic, the buzz enough to get it promoted to an actual Broadway theatre. The mix of gore, humor, and catchy songs took the New York theatre scene by storm, and Demi became the Tony winner for ‘Best Direction of a Musical’ by total upset.
After that came some hit revivals, a Broadway production of Disney’s Lilo and Stitch that garnered her her second Tony nomination and, most recently, a disasterous production of Avatar: The Musical -- brought down shortly after previews by a wildly massive budget, extensive runtime, and chaotic stunt disasters.
Along with the hit to her professional reputation, it also had an effect on her marriage. She and her partner divorced while the show was in workshops, and it’s widely rumored that the show tanked because Demi’s focus was pulled.
After seeking a change of scenery on the west coast, Demi is in search of her next inspiration or project, looking to gain back credibility to her theatrical name.
