7 years ago (see grainy flip phone photo) this week, my badass mom faced, with unflinching bravery and her signature humor, the diagnosis of a tangerine-sized meningioma (what she referred to as "alien baby") and subsequent brain surgery to remove it. Every day, every single day, multiple times a day, I'm grateful that this woman survived. I'm trying to formulate and peck out cohesive thoughts on how unconditional love is precious and rare, but I didn't inherit my mom's stoicism and keep weeping on this confounded screen. Instead, parting advice from an email I sent out about my mom's status in 2010: "Please eat your leafy, green vegetables, exercise three times a week, get away from the computer, drink more water and less soda, and most importantly, tell your mom you love her." Or dad, sibling, mentor. Insert person of unparalleled worth here. Tell them now and often. <3
