"Mh....I started...I think I was eleven...maybe it was more than fifteen years...math has never been my specialty....twenty seven...minus..." He mumbled to himself, but then she put on the CD and Clarissa began to settle.
"...That's precious," he commented, carefully lowering Clarissa into the crib and handing her the little blanket.
Nunnally was still smiling. At least it sounded like he had experience. She let out a soft giggle then.
"It didn't sound like he was happy with Suzaku's request when asked, but no one can deny that it works for her," she paused to listen to the lullaby as well. "I doubt he learned it from our mother since he's only three years older than me, but I like to think he did."
Besides that, he did have a lot of alone time to practice his piano and violin in solitude. It did sound like he trained his vocals on occasion, too. Even if, at the time, he thought he'd never have an audience.
That was adorable, although he'd heard that it wasn't necessarily the safest thing to do as some people were such heavy sleepers that they rolled over and accidentally hurt the baby and didn't wake up....
"Thanks, that really helps," he mimicked the motion he was told about, wanting her to be completely calm before he put her down in the crib. He wanted her to feel safe, although now that Nunnally was here, he was sure that might help.
"I used to babysit a neighbor's little guy when I was a child," he explained, rocking the baby back and forth a little. "...Never thought that sort of thing would come in handy about 15 years later."
True, but if she recalled, Lelouch would only do that in a very controlled setting. Always with a second set of eyes and...little barriers set up so he can't roll. He'd thought about it a lot.
She was sure that's why he handed Clarissa to Reuben. Because he didn't have time to set up the safety precautions.
"How old were you when you'd babysit?" She didn't know how old he was at the moment." She went over to the bookshelf that seemed to also have little homemade CDs on it and opened up the player that rested on top of the unit. "This should help even more. Suzaku wanted to provide her lullabies, so he had Lelouch record himself singing them."
She pressed play and the unmistakable sound of Lelouch's piano was heard--along with a little embarrassed mumble. Then he started singing. Quiet and soft.
A remarkable voice, hidden from the world.
Clarissa's crying slowly died down...and her eyes started to droop with sleep as well.
Not for the first time, he found that he was incredibly concerned about the pair of them--thankfully, he was going to be in town for a few more weeks before he had to travel again, so he could help out some until he had to go on his flight.
He was heading toward the crib when Nunnally wheeled in and he offered a smile despite knowing she couldn't see it.
"Just me Nunnally," Reuben hummed softly as he made his way over to the crib. "Lelouch asked for some help with her so he could sleep...she hasn't met me yet, so she's a little fussy, but that's normal since I'm a stranger to her right now. Do you know if this is around the normal time they put her down for a nap? I didn't manage to get any of that information before he kinda...passed out."
"Oh!" A smile came to her face as well, remembering the few pleasant interactions she'd had with him. She wheeled herself a little closer. "Yes, I believe so. If he just fed her, he usually tries to get her to nap afterward."
She thought it was adorable how he sometimes napped with their baby. Though it was still very obvious how Lelouch had his reservations about even having a child...there was no doubt that he did love her. She was there to witness his reaction to meeting his baby for the first time, after all.
"It helps that being fed makes her sleepy, too. But since you're a new face, try rubbing her back with a flat palm from her neck to her lower back. It's very soothing to her...I've used that method many times already."
It wasn't shocking at all to him that she started crying--he was an unfamiliar person after all and she had been handed to him so suddenly. He was impressed he managed to get out of the room first though, so thankfully her crying shouldn't wake Lelouch.
He brought her against his chest like he had been taught all those years ago and made little humming sounds, rocking her back and forth as he walked--he was looking for a blanket to wrap her in and where her crib might be.
Her crib would be found in the recently moved out surrogate's room. It looked like Suzaku was in charge of the furnishings and the decorations in the room, as it seemed to be the case for the whole house.
Her room was colored a pale red, her crib sitting below the window which was adorned with a deep crimson curtain that was double-layered with a sheer black fabric.
She already had a chest of toys that were appropriate for a newborn--easy access for the parents to entertain their child.
There was a rocking chair set in the corner of the room, along with a bookshelf beside it full of baby books--some even in braille, just in case Lelouch wanted to read to her. There was also a changing table settled against the wall. It was clear that Suzaku was taking on a lot of the responsibility.
Full time and dangerous job, changing the baby, taking care of both Lelouch and Nunnally...
"Hello?" A soft voice sounded and Nunnally wheeled herself into the room. "I thought I heard voices..."

He took Clarissa when he was handed her, cradling her close and automatically making sure she was supported properly in his arms--those instincts never quite left him, no matter how long it had been since his last babysit.
But then Lelouch laid down right there and went to sleep.
Reuben let out a soft, amused chuckle and his smile softened. "Good night." He turned to Clarissa, amused that Lelouch hadn't even been able to stay awake enough to describe her routine or tell him where she was supposed to be put down for a nap, but--
"Lets see if we can find your stuff, hm~?" His smile was warm as he went to go on an adventure with the little baby--his hair was down for once, so he was pretty much expecting her hands to start tugging at it at some point.
Lelouch had been dangerously close to passing out the entire time he fed Clarissa. He wouldn't have had any time to relay the information. At least he was able to safely pass her to someone that could care for her.
The infant continued to wiggle her legs until she was cradled in the stranger's arms--so then she started wiggling her arms. She did indeed get her fingers tangled in Reuben's hair and tugged, all while she stuffed the fingers of her other hand in her mouth.
...It took her a little bit to realize that the one carrying her wasn't her parent and tears welled up in her eyes and her face scrunched up just before she started crying.
"You're not wrong." Akira responded quietly, still making sure to fidget with his clothes - not that it needed much thinking about, he was fidgety by nature in any scenario that wasn't thievery. "On the one hand, they can't hurt him without getting punished for it - but can hurt you. But on the other... can they really?"
"Anyone with half a brain cell would be able to reason that hurting you could easily be construed as a threat to him. They can't hurt him, so they go after his family. Just as dangerous to do anything to you, either, lest they get themselves on the wrong side of the one person that gives a shit and has the power to do something about it." Unless they were stupid. Or had a death wish.
But, Akira thought, curiously watching Lelouch (where was C.C in all this...? If Lelouch didn't find her, then where did she go? Did she exist at all?) and continuing to admire how confident he looked, despite his Probably Blindness.
"...Good to have a place you can be yourself, though." He added, moving to lean against a counter. "Especially in this day and age." As far as Britannia was concerned, 'culture' was a disease that needed curing. "Promise on my heart, my soul, and my Japanese heritage that I won't make things any harder on you two." Then after a moment, he could n't help but make a quiet, amused chuckle, and added;
"Well. Not intentionally, anyway~ Rumor mill will do what rumor mill does best, after all."
...Him?
Lelouch continued about making the tea, picking up bits and pieces of what Akira was saying. He also noticed the fidgeting...
When it was finished, he separated the drink into two different cups, going purely off of sound alone to tell how full it was and when to stop. He turned the stove off when he was finished and walked over to the table, setting both cups down just before he took a seat.
"I appreciate it," he lifted his cup to his lips then gently set it back down with a sigh. "Help yourself," he gestured to Akira's cup, "you were fidgeting quite a bit there. This tea works well for anxiety."
"Of course," his chest felt warm...it was nice that he could be helpful in situations like these. He was about to insist that if he was going to pass out he get up and go to a bed, but then he was asked--
A soft smile made its way to his face--and even though Lelouch couldn't see it, he was sure that it was obvious in his voice. "Green!" He leaned in to make sure the towel wasn't necessary anymore--
"Okay, but if you need to pass out, you should probably get to a bed. Do you think you can make it to one?"
"Mmm..." He still didn't know what colors looked like, but he'd been told what Suzaku's eye color was, as well as his own. So she had Suzaku's eyes...
He paused, shifting his hold to under Clarissa's arms and held her up toward where he'd heard Reuben's voice. He didn't say a word, but when he felt the weight leave his hands--
He didn't make any move to get up or go to his bedroom...he simply laid down on the couch.
"...Night," he murmured, barely above a whisper.
Oh.
He gave a soft, happy noise. "Yes. She focused on me as soon as I walked up. Her eyes are clear and one the prettiest greens I've ever seen." He was glad that at least he could help with that fear, even if he couldn't always be too useful about these things.
"...Thank you."
That was a relief. More of a relief than Reuben probably knew, even if he could guess at it. While he didn't really mind his blindness now, he'd had years to learn how to live his life with it.
He wouldn't wish total blindness on an infant. And though she was sighted at birth, he was sure Nunnally had the same thoughts and emotions on this topic.
Again, he focused his hearing on her, waiting for her little burps to slow and whines to stop. He waited for a calm and content Clarissa.
"...I might pass out," he admitted as he positioned her into his arms again. However, he paused. "What...what color were Suzaku's eyes?"
Annnnd that's what he definitely had expected to hear based on the look on Lelouch's face. Before the other man could say anything about the towel, Reuben was already handing it to him--it had been draped nearby.
"You rub her back very gently--definitely don't try it without this though, it can be gross otherwise." Lelouch wasn't the type to get angry at the baby for something that she couldn't control--or at least he hadn't given Reuben that impression--so he bit down the anxiety and need to explain that she couldn't help but spit up sometimes.
Some people were horrible and he had seen quite a lot of it as a child, so it made him anxious.
"...After this, why don't you go take a nap? You can explain to me her routine and how you want her put to bed and I'll take care of it."
"...Mm," Lelouch quietly thanked Reuben and placed the towel on his shoulder before he repositioned his daughter so she was gently rested against him.
She was still whining quietly--trapped gas was never fun. While he did what he was instructed to do, he let his thoughts wander.
"Reuben...? Please answer me honestly. Did she seem able to focus...?"

"Ooops--sorry, I was a little bit more worried about you--" He apologized and immediately took his shoes off and set them aside. The green eyed little baby was absolutely precious, but he could practically see the exhaustion written all over Lelouch's face.
"...Have you slept at all?" The first few weeks were always the most difficult from what he knew. He had some experience babysitting from when he was a young teen--a young cable down the road had a baby and their relationship was...well....not quite stable enough to really take care of one yet. That being the case, he had done his best to help out--and been paid for it too.
"Suzaku's tried helping me find time," in fact, Suzaku was the one taking on most of the parenting duties. Perhaps he hoped that letting Lelouch feed her would make them take a nap together.
Honestly, that sounded like Suzaku's reasoning.
Clarissa let out a quiet whine then, the bottle coming out of her mouth as she started squirming.
--Oh right.
Babies needed to be burped afterward, right? Where did he put that little shoulder towel...
The moment he had found out what was going on, he had been a great big mixture of excited and so very concerned for his friends. A baby wasn't something that you should go into unprepared--and from what little he'd been told, it sure sounded like Lelouch wasn't entirely prepared for this.
He was quiet as he entered because he was concerned that the baby could have fallen asleep and--as any parent of a newborn knew, or anyone who had been around one--those moments of sleep and quiet were exceedingly precious and at times far in between.
He carefully made his way over, making sure his shoes made noise but not enough to disrupt the baby.
"Did she fall asleep?" He asked as he took off his jacket to drape it over a chair.
"...No," he mumbled, still listening to her little gulps from the bottle and her breathing pattern. He couldn't see Reuben, but the little girl with forest-green eyes could. When he came into view, she stared at him while she enjoyed her milk--even kicked her feet out a little to express excitement.
Lelouch sighed, letting the hand that cradled her smooth out her soft hair.
"...You forgot to remove your shoes," he added after a moment. There were still things he was a stickler for. Cleanliness and shoes off in the house were rules for a reason.

She was warm on his lap. A soft little ball that would squirm sporadically. Her little arms and legs still learning how to function. It was Suzaku that had prepared and tested her bottle, but she was quietly feeding with it now.
She was quiet. For now. He took a slow breath, and the exhale was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"--It's unlocked," he called, though his voice was still hushed, just in case the tiny girl was falling asleep. He almost hoped she would. He was constantly listening to her breathing for indications that she'd succumbed to slumber.
|| Due Date
They kept their promise. The young woman hired to be their surrogate, the one they brought into their household to save her from being extorted by her mother...
It was time.
Lelouch and Nunnally were home alone with her when her water broke, when full contractions started. Left alone with two blind people, she couldn't help but panic--to which Nunnally stayed by her side and started trying to calm her while Lelouch(equally panicked) went to find his phone.
He dialed Suzaku's number, then--convinced himself to call for an ambulance. They'd arrive much faster than Suzaku would, anyway. It was just as fast as he thought it'd be, so he sent a voice to text message to Suzaku while they were in the ambulance to let him know to meet them at the hospital.
Where all they could do, unfortunately, was wait. He paced, holding Nunnally's hand so he didn't wander far or into other people, until he heard Suzaku. It didn't take long until he was back to pacing but was now holding Suzaku's hand. Eventually, his husband convinced him to sit down with them.
And slowly, surely, he fell asleep...rested against Suzaku's shoulder.
"--Lamperouge?"
A voice called out. Only minutes later, they entered the nursery ward, guided by Suzaku...who had Lelouch let go of Nunnally's chair so he could bring him over to the bed. Leah smiled with obvious exhaustion and gently took hold of his hand, only to place it on his newly born baby daughter's soft head.
"Ah--wait, wait--"
Everyone had been aware of how he felt about this. How worried, insecure, and terrified he was of becoming a father. Lelouch tensed, especially upon realizing just how small her head was. Then--
Then...
Then he started tearing up, now feeling with just his fingertips as he circled her head from her hair, down her soft cheek--was that a tiny ear??--to her equally pudgy chin. "Do you want to hold her?" Leah asked and he felt her hold up the small infant at the suggestion.
"I--ah...w-wait--" A hand on his back...Suzaku reassuring him, comforting him. He took a slow breath...and nodded stiffly.
"I don't remember hearing you guys talking about it, but," Leah and Suzaku both were helping adjust Lelouch so he could hold his daughter. "Have you picked a name? I think...I'd like to know." Since this would be her last surrogacy.
"...Clarissa," Lelouch whispered quietly, holding her close. His daughter...This child. She was his daughter...
“That was a good voice, use that voice.”
[#NoBigNeil - The Vagabond Chronicles Chapter 1 - Sentence Starters]
Hand held in both of Suzaku's, Lelouch was startled just slightly by that proclamation. Did...Was there more confidence in his tone? Maybe more than usual...
Or...
Was it softer?
"...What about it...pleased you?"

IF WE RP A ‘ROMANTIC’ RELATIONSHIP: I want them to argue. I want them to be sad. I want them to worry. I want there to be tension. Because that’s what a real relationship is. It’s perfectly normal for people to be sad & worried & fight. Them being happy & loving all the time just doesn’t feel right to me. It’s not always gonna be happy, it’s not always gonna be sunshine & rainbows. There’s always gonna be a struggle, because that’s how they’ll grow & they have to solve each problem together.
