yesterday in economic botany we were learning about plant based oil compounds and stuff and my botany professor was talking about lynn seed oil, which in woodworking is rubbed on over furniture as a varnish. this oil has an exothermic chemical reaction with oxygen, meaning that the reaction creates heat. what often happens, apparently, is that woodworkers will finish rubbing on the oil with a rag and then will ball up the rag and throw it away, but because the reaction is taking place and the heat canât escape (like it would on a piece of furniture where it can be cooled) it gets trapped in the rag, which gets hotter and hotter until it reaches the temperature where it bursts into flame. apparently many woodworking shops have been burned down by this. the proper way to dispose of rags with this oil is to hang them up on a clothesline, so again the reaction never gets enough heat to start a fire. im telling you this because im a writer and ive never heard of substance that will justâŚspontaneously combust conveniently like that so long as itâs in a confined space. my botany professor tried it in a trash can in his driveway and it did indeed burst into flame after 45 minutes, which is an exceptionally convenient time delay. im sorry im tying this so fast my laptop is on 2% battery and theres no outlet an
please please please do NOT give up on medicating your adhd because you have a bad experience during your first attempts. finding the right medication/dosage combo takes trial and error, but it can feel like a MIRACLE once you do.
Being medicated isnât for everyone, but it is a powerful tool in our toolbox. and I am seeing way too many people giving up that option prematurely, because they are unware that:
there are different medication options. they do not all have the same side effects, and not all are amphetaminesÂ
dosage matters. if you are discontinuing bc of side effects, consider trying a lower dose first
a good doctor will be willing to work with you to find a regime that works
finding the right meds/dosage combo will take trial and error. and it will be worth it once you do.
Also, once you find something that works, KEEP TAKING IT!!
I know thatâs such a âduhâ statement but so so many people assume the high they feel for the first few days on a stimulant that works is how itâs always going to be and itâs not. Once your brain gets used to the new ânormalâ on meds, you lose that high feeling and get to a âhey, I can actually get shit done, lookit thatâ kind of place.
It amazes me how many people never had anyone explain that to them. Iâve been on some sort of SSRI for the last 20 years so when I started Adderall I knew what to expect. I had so many people (in a group for ADHD) tell me that the âholy shit look at me go!!!â feeling would wear off and it would stop working after a week or two and I had to walk them through just how wrong they were and quite a few had no idea that that feeling isnât supposed to last long term. đ¤Śđźââď¸
I explained it like this:
Your unmedicated brain is used to operating at a 4 on a good day. It sucks, youâre all over the place, a hot mess. Then you get on a medication that works (antidepressant, stimulant, non-stimulant, whatever) and the first few days are incredible! You canât believe that this is how itâs supposed to be! Your brain is now holding steady at an 8 or 9 and you are one productive bitch! But then your brain gets used to operating at an 8 or 9 and it becomes your new normal. Itâs harder to recognize that the medication is still working because thereâs no noticeable high anymore. You get bummed because you assume itâs not working and you either request a med change or a bump in dosage. Then 8 months later youâre frustrated and depressed because youâve maxed out on the dosage of whatever med it is and you think nothing is going to work but really youâve unknowingly self sabotaged.
Because the truth is, the first dose worked perfectly, but your squirrelly ADHD brain is so used to searching for the next dopamine hit that you failed to recognize that you were able to get through the tasks you needed to just fine. You werenât hyperfocused on researching the nuances of plant breeding, you didnât spend 5 hours in executive dysfunction while staring at your vacuum, you actually remembered to thaw out chicken for dinner. You missed all of that because you were looking for that high feeling that you had at first.
So, how does one figure out if the med is working or not when you canât tell because your brain is a dopamine fiend? Personally, I make daily âta-daâ lists. Not lists of things I need to do, but lists of things I did. Before meds, Iâd have maybe 5 things on a ta-da list. After meds, Iâd have 15-20 things on my list! So it does work, even if I donât feel like Iâm on cloud 9 when I take it.
Tl:dr Your brain is a fucking liar and your medication is likely working even if you donât feel like it is anymore.
^^^^^^ iâve had this experience too. not realizing that the meds are working once âworkingâ becomes your new normal is, unfortunately, a reason many of us start skipping medication. hint: the results are not good!!!
also a shout-out to 90s/00s kids who were over-medicated by their doctors & parents (widespread phenomenon).
I hope you are brave enough to explore your options as an adult. I am giving you full permission to firmly state your concerns to your healthcare providers and to insist on a low starting dose if side effects are your major worry.
no no thatâs a bop, i love it

Emergency Continues
My mom had to be taken to the ER. We never really recovered financially and this is just another big hit. Her heart rate was severely high and it caused her to immediately throw up and unable to get off of the ground.
I hate to bother and ask for more help but I still have commissions open though Iâm still working on the last batch. DM me here or email at [email protected]
I also have Ko-Fi if you want to support me there as well- https://ko-fi.com/raybuggybug
Iâm sorry and thank you.
My momâs bill was 1300USD.
Weâre still trying to get our own places and living with my grandma for 300 a week.
My mom is fine but she also didnât get any work done. They found dead tissue in her heart but couldnât do anything about it and she didnât even stay over night.
Itâs really a hit after hit.
i made them adults and susie breathes healing fire now

I found it.
#im sorry. the Blogging for Dummies book is RECENT???
At first I thought it was from 2010 because thatâs when âBlogging for Dummies, 3rd Editionâ was published, but then I noticed this smartphone ad:
Which looks really out-of-place for that period of time, so I realized I must have been looking at the wrong edition.
Then I looked at those trending tags up at the top of the screen. Computer, enhance image.
I didnât watch house of the dragon but I knew it was a more recent show, so I could have used that to narrow it down. More useful however was the dual venice film festival tags, and the fact that one of them had âdonât worry darlingâ (which I surmised to be the name of a film) underneath it, so now I just had to find out when that film was shown at the venice film festival. Sure enough, it premiered on September 5th, 2022.
My next step was going to the post archive page for @important-animal-images, filtering the posts by âPhotoâ and tagged as â#cats,â and then flipping through to September 2022. Sure enough, the post was there!
And as one final mystery to solve, I looked up blogging for dummies by Amy Lupold Bair and found out that âBlogging All-In-One for Dummies, 3rd Editionâ was published in April of 2023 and has this cover:
Which matches perfectly with the cover of the book that @dakotaqueen had in her original post!

âchuffed doesnt mean what you think it meansâ
it means exactly what i think it means its just some stupid word that literally has two definitions that mean the opposite thing
what the hell
This makes me really chuffed
This post is quite egregious
Well Iâm nonplussed by this whole post.
goddamnit.
all of you go to hell
And you wonder why i am boggled at times
These are called contronyms! A word that is its own opposite.
Why the fuck do these exist
One theory is that the sarcastic use of the word became exceedingly prevalent and because another dictionary definition.Â
Are you telling me that we were such sarcastic shits it literally changed our language.

Tips for Writing Injuries
⧠Broken ribs suck. You donât just âwalk it off.â Breathing hurts. Laughing hurts. Existing hurts. Characters with rib injuries wonât be doing heroic sprints.
⧠Concussions arenât instant naps. Dazed vision, nausea, dizziness, maybe even personality changes, but theyâre not going to collapse neatly like in the movies.
⧠Blood loss is sneaky. Itâs not just about dramatic pools of blood. Itâs dizziness, confusion, and the body getting cold as circulation tanks.
⧠Adrenaline lies. Someone can take a serious injury and not feel it until the fightâs over. That âI didnât realize I was bleeding until laterâ trope? Very real.
⧠Twisted ankles are brutal. One bad step and suddenly running is off the table. Even walking hurts like hell. Perfect way to ground a chase scene.
⧠Burns linger. Even small burns hurt more than most people expect. Blisters, infection risk, constant pain, itâs not just a cool scar later.
⧠Dislocated shoulders = useless arm. Characters canât keep swinging a sword or firing a gun. Theyâre basically fighting one-armed until itâs fixed.
⧠Shock is a thing. Pale skin, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and eventually disorientation. A character might not even realize how bad their wound is.
⧠Stitches arenât magic. Getting sewn up is painful and recovery takes time. Theyâre not instantly battle-ready after a needle and thread.
⧠Scars tell stories. Some fade, some donât. Some stay sensitive forever. Donât forget the aftermath when the wound becomes part of the character.
