In her short essay “The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction”, science-fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin proposed a version of human history in which the first great tool was not a sword but a sack – a carrier bag, capable of holding together diverse seeds or stories in productive tension. “With or before the tool that forces energy outward”, she writes, “we made the tool that brings energy home”. (. . .) In the audio-visual display, Al-Maria presents two alternative origin myths in tune with Le Guin’s understanding of history as a collaborative experiment. (. . .) Ziruma Jayut, a member of the Wayuu people indigenous to northern Colombia, tells the story of Wolunca – the first Wayuu woman.
