Hiromix (Toshikawa Hiromi) rose to fame after winning the 11th “New Cosmos of Photography” photography award at the age of 17. Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan’s most noted photographers, nominated Hiromix as the 1st place winner. Titled “Seventeen Girl Days,” her winning entry was a self-made, 36-page photobook consisting of copies of her photographs. The booklet was essentially a photo diary, containing snapshot images of flowers, friends, animals, and self-portraits.

Hiromix has been influential in Japan’s photographic industry for opening the door for women photographers. Prior to her launch to fame in the 1990s, photography remained a male-dominated industry in Japan.

Hiromix photographs are personal snapshots, random moments caught in the act of being, with the exception of “Japanese Beauty” (1997), where she shoots fashion models.
