𝑇𝐻𝐸 𝐵𝐴𝐷 𝑊𝑂𝐿𝐹 ,

this  meta  is  centered  around  the  doctor  who  episodes  ‘rise  of  the  cybermen’  and  ‘age  of  steel.’  it  will  primarily  be  detailing  the  intense  trauma  rose  endured  throughout  the  twenty-four  hours  she  spent  within  the  parallel  universe  for  the  first  time.  to  start  this  off,  it’s  important  to  note  how  pete  tyler  plays  a  pivotal  role  in  rose’s  perception  of  the  world  and  who  she  is  as  a  person.  to  backtrack  a  season,  in  ‘father’s  day,  rose  had  previously  witnessed  her  father  die  when  she  was  supposed  to  be  an  infant,  but  due  to  the  doctor  allowing  her  to  visit  that  moment  to  obtain  some  closure,  she  went  to  the  moment  of  his  death  but  cracked  under  the  pain  of  seeing  it  and  subsequently  saved  him.  this  created  a  rupture  in  time  because  his  death  was  a  fixed  point  and  in  the  end,  he  had  to  return  to  his  demise.

going  back  to  that  moment,  rose  saw  a  lot  of  how  her  parents  interacted  with  one  another  and  it  was  vastly  different  to  how  she  imagined.  of  course  jackie  wouldn’t  have  told  her  daughter  that  they  were  constantly  having  arguments  or  that  she  suspected  pete  was  having  an  affair.  that’s  not  something  you  tell  your  young  daughter  who  is  coping  with  growing  up  without  a  father,  something  hard  enough  to  navigate  as  is.

still,  rose  has  a  lot  of  raw  pain  that  has  only  been  amplified  since  meeting  her  father  and  going  through  such  an  ordeal.  so  when  she  steps  out  of  the  tardis  doors  in  the  parallel  universe  and  sees  an  advertisement  for  a  product  created  by  none  other  than  pete  tyler,  no  doubt  she’s  going  to  be  feeling  multitudes  of  emotions.  the  doctor  kept  instilling  in  her  “that’s  not  your  father”  and  “don’t  look  at  it”  but  how  on  earth  could  she  ignore  that  after  everything  she’s  been  through?  her  father  is  alive,  his  little  products  and  ideas  that  she  grew  up  hearing  about  are  a  success.  he’s  rich  and  seemingly  happy.

then  the  cybus  industries  app  connects  to  her  phone  and  it  appears  to  be  connected  to  pete  so  finally  the  doctor  relents  and  she  goes  to  his  mansion  for  her  mother’s  birthday  party.  rose  was  anxious  to  see  the  inner  workings  of  his  life,  how  he  came  to  be  a  success,  all  the  things  that  she  never  had  the  chance  to  witness  in  her  own  universe.  but  she  doesn’t  exist  and  that’s  what  breaks  her  heart.  the  thoughts  of  her  mother  sitting  back  home:  would  she  have  been  better  off  without  me?  am  i  the  reason  that  my  dad  never  succeeded,  or  even  worse,  have  i  contributed  to  his  death?  she  knows  it’s  messed  up  to  think  about,  but  when  it’s  right  in  front  of  her,  it’s  hard  not  to  let  those  intrusive  thoughts  eat  away  at  her  heart.  then  there’s  the  alternate  jackie,  very  much  spoiled  rotten,  and  tells  rose  that  she’s  nothing  but  staff  at  her  party.  this  isn’t  her  true  mother,  but  she  looks  like  jackie  and  has  her  voice;  shares  her  name.  to  hear  her  own  mother,  who  has  only  ever  been  her  support  system,  talk  to  her  like  that?  she’s  destroyed.

then  the  cybermen  come  and  they  alone  are  a  nightmare.  they  bring  nothing  but  pain  and  suffering.  rose  is  horrified  by  john  lumic’s  creations,  his  factories  and  how  the  cyber-conversion  actually  occurs.  her  alternate  mother  is  taken  to  the  factory  and  turned  into  a  cyberman.  all  rose  can  think  is:  “my  mum’s  dead. ”  even  though  it’s  not  true.  she  can  still  remember  the  hopeless  people  walking  into  the  chambers  like  lambs  for  the  slaughter.  the  screams,  the  intercom  talking  about  waste  product  from  conversion.  it’s  sickening,  but  she  needs  to  put  a  stop  to  it.

this  time  she’s  getting  with  pete  tyler  is  everything  she’s  dreamed  of,  but  seeing  his  jackie  die  grounds  her  in  the  fact  that  he’s  gone  in  her  own  universe.  she  still  can’t  help  but  keep  close.  rose  watches  the  doctor,  mickey  and  jake’s  plan  to  remove  the  emotional  inhibitor  unfold.  it’s  traumatizing.  all  those  poor  people  who  had  their  lives  stripped  away  realizing  what  they  have  become,  the  terrible  screams  as  they  died  from  the  breakdown.  the  horror  she  feels  in  that  moment  is  unlike  anything  else.  they  manage  to  escape  but  the  damage  is  already  done.  pete  tyler  finds  out  who  she  really  is  and  rejects  her.  to  lose  her  father  not  only  once  but  now  twice?  it’s  a  devastation.  but  that  emotional  wound  only  deepens  when  mickey  announces  that  he’s  staying  in  the  parallel  universe.  she  understands  why,  he  has  his  nan  ---  the  woman  he  loves  so  dearly.  there’s  nothing  left  for  him  back  home  apart  from  her,  but  even  now,  she’s  getting  closer  and  closer  to  the  doctor.  mickey  is  still  her  best  friend,  a  confidant,  someone  she  trusts  with  her  soul.  so  she’s  not  just  losing  her  father,  but  the  only  person  who  ever  cared  for  her  properly.
