More Than 170 Elvis Artifacts to be Sold at Auction During Elvis Week at Graceland in Memphis
AP Photo/Mark Humphrey, File
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) β Want an Elvis Presley βStarburstβ jumpsuit he wore during concerts in Las Vegas in 1973? Or how about a diamond and gold pendant the King of Rock βnβ Roll gave Sammy Davis Jr.?
Theyβre among 174 authenticated artifacts up for auction Thursday evening at Graceland, Presleyβs longtime Memphis, Tennessee, home.
The auction is part of Elvis Week, the annual commemoration of Presleyβs death at age 42 on Aug. 16, 1977. Auctions are also held on his birthday in January.
Bids are accepted online for several weeks prior to the live auction, when all the bids are brought to the floor, said Laura Pickett. Sheβs managing director of Graceland Auctions, which handles auctions for Graceland. Pickett said all the artifacts are from third party collectors; nothing is owned by Graceland itself.
Joanne Colless and her husband traveled from the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, Australia, to attend this yearβs Elvis Week. What caught her eye? A pair of 1956 Elvis Presley Enterprises canvas sneakers in like-new condition, with the original pictorial box. The original owner apparently kept them in their box instead of wearing them, according to a description of the sneakers by Graceland Auctions. Theyβre expected to draw bids up to $6,000.
βI like the sneakers β¦ because my son is a dancer and I think he would really get a kick out of having them to dance in,β she said. βAnd to say heβs actually been in the shoes of Elvis Presley.β
Other artifacts in Thursdayβs auction include:
PERSONAL HANDGUN
The gun was manufactured in West Germany in 1974 and has intricate nickel engravings on the barrel, trigger guard and portions of the grip. βElvisβ is engraved on the barrel, and one side of the wooden grip sports Elvisβ emblem βTCB (Taking Care of Business)β and the lightning bolt. Estimate: $100,000-$125,000.
___
βVIVA LAS VEGASβ JACKET
Presley wore the jacket during the popular dance scene with Ann-Margret in the 1964 MGM classic βViva Las Vegasβ. Estimate: $30,000-$50,000.
___
ELVIS SUIT
The 1962 dark, charcoal-colored suit was worn by Presley in the MGM movie βIt Happened at the Worldβs Fair.β Estimate: $20,000-$30,000.
___
MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET GUITAR
The Million Dollar Quartet is named for the stars β Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis β who came together for just one night in an impromptu jam session at Sun Records on Dec. 4, 1956. The vintage Harmony Monterey guitar has the signatures of all four on the body. Estimate: $20,000-$30,000.
___
PINKY RING
Presley gave the 15-diamond gold pinky ring to a member of his inner circle who started working with Presley after he returned from his military service and continued working with him until the early β70s. Estimate: $15,000-$20,000.
___
OWL-SHAPED RING
Presley gave the 14-karat yellow gold owl ring to a fan after a concert in Lake Tahoe in May 1973. Estimate: $15,000-$20,000.

Presleyβs U.S. Army issue sewing kit, accompanied by a black-and-white photograph that appears to depict a dress-uniform-clad Presley sewing his daily Army fatigues. Estimate: $3,000-$5,000.

Elvis at 80: 25 Chart Facts You Should Know About the King
Though itβs hard to imagine, Elvis Presley would have turned 80 on Thursday. To salute the King, here are 25 facts you should know about the man from Tupelo, Mississippi.
1. Elvis had Billboardβs 1 song of the year for both 1956 (βHeartbreak Hotelβ) and 1957 (βAll Shook Upβ). Nobody else has ever had the yearβs No. 1 song two years running.
2. Elvis was just 21 when he first notchedΒ Billboardβs No. 1 song of the year. He was the youngest artist to achieve this feat to that point. (Two artists have since had the yearβs top song who were even younger. Lulu was just 19 when she had the No. 1 song of 1967, βTo Sir With Love.β Andy Gibb was 20 when he had the top song of 1978, βShadow Dancing.β)
3. Elvisβs 1956 single βDonβt Be Cruelβ/βHound Dogβ is one of just twoΒ records where both sides have, separately, been voted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The other is the Beatlesβ 1967Β single βPenny Laneβ/βStrawberry Fields Forever.β
4. βDonβt Be Cruelβ/βHound Dogβ was No. 1 for 11 weeks. That was a rock-era record until 1992, when Boyz II Menβs βEnd of the Roadβ stayed on top for 13 weeks.
5. Elvisβs No. 1 albums span 46 years and five months, from May 1956 to October 2002. Only Barbra Streisand has had a longer span of No. 1 albums (just shy of 50 years). (Streisand and Presley sing a duet version of his βLove Me Tenderβ on her recent No. 1 album, Partners.)
6. Elvis had a No. 1 album (Elv1s: 30 No. 1 Hits) in 2002, 25 years after he died. Nobody else has ever had a No. 1 album that long after his or her death.
7. Four of Elvisβs albums (Elvis Presley and the soundtracks to Loving You, G.I. Blues, and Blue Hawaii) each logged 10 or more weeks at No. 1. Only one other artist β the Beatlesβ stayed on top that long with four different albums.
8. Elvis had 17 No. 1 hits, a total topped only the Beatles (with 20) and Mariah Carey (with 18). In addition, six of Elvisβs songs peaked at No. 2. The biggest of these, βReturn to Sender,β spent five straight weeks at No. 2 in 1962, stuck behind theFour Seasonsβ βBig Girls Donβt Cry.β
9. Elvis had 24 consecutive top five hits (excluding B-sides, EPs, and old Sun Records recordings). The streak started with βHeartbreak Hotelβ in April 1956 and extended through the aforementioned βReturn to Senderβ in November 1962. The streak-breaker: βOne Broken Heart for Sale,β which peaked at No. 11 in March 1963.
10. Six of Elvisβs singles reached No. 1 in both U.S. and the U.K. Thatβs a record for a male solo artist. (The tally includes three consecutive singles in 1960-61: βItβs Now or Never,β βAre You Lonesome To-night?,β and βSurrender.β)
11. ElvisβsΒ Blue Hawaii soundtrack was No. 1 for 20 weeks. Only three other artist-linked soundtracks have had 20 or more weeks at No. 1: Bee Geesβ Saturday Night Fever (24 weeks in 1978), Prince & the Revolutionβs Purple Rain (24 weeks in 1984-85), and Whitney Houstonβs The Bodyguard (20 weeks in 1992-93).
12. Seven of Elvisβs top 10 hits came from his movies. The first was βLove Me Tenderβ (No. 1 in October 1956). The last was βBossa Nova Babyβ from Fun in AcapulcoΒ (No. 8 in November 1963).
13. Elvisβs biggest hit of the 1960s was βAre You Lonesome To-night?β The 1960 smash spent six weeks at No. 1 and received a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year. The song was first a hit for female singer Vaughn De Leath in 1927 β eight years before Elvis was born.
14. Singer (and future Gong Show panelist) Jaye P. Morgan had a chart hit with βAre You Lonesome To-night?β in February 1959, nearly two years before Elvisβs version topped the chart.
15. Elvisβs biggest hit of the 1970s was βBurning Love.β The track reached No. 2 in October 1972. (Oddly, it was kept of the No. 1 spot by a hit by another 1950s rock βnβ roll veteran β Chuck Berryβs βMy Ding-a-Ling.β)
16. The only GrammysΒ that Elvis wonΒ were for religious recordings. He won three timesΒ for the Best Sacred or Inspirational Performance. (The Recording AcademyΒ made amendsΒ in 1971, makingΒ Presley the first rock artist to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award β then called the Bing Crosby Award).
17. Elvisβs Christmas Album logged four weeks at No. 1 when it was first released in 1957. Its run at No. 1 was interrupted by Bing Crosbyβs 1945 album Merry Christmas, whichΒ returned for one final week on top. (Elvis and Bing, two of the biggest music stars of the 20th Century, died within two months of each other in 1977.)
18. Elvisβs last No. 1 album in his lifetime was Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite, which topped the chart in May 1973. ItΒ displaced Pink Floydβs The Dark Side of the Moon (which has gone on to become one ofΒ the best-selling albums of all time).
19. Elvis was No. 1 on the country chart with βWay Downβ the week he died in August 1977. The record hit No. 1 in the Billboard issue dated Aug. 20, whichΒ was published the previous week.Β (He died on Aug. 16.) He returned to No. 1 on the country chart posthumously in March 1981 with a remix of his 1968 hit βGuitar Man.β
20. Cheap Trickβs 1988 remake of βDonβt Be Cruelβ (which reached No. 4 that October) marked the first time a remake of one of Elvisβs top 10 hits went top 10 for another artist.
21. UB40βs 1993 version of βCanβt Help Falling in Loveβ is the most successful remake of one of Elvisβs hits. The groupβs reggae-tinged take on the song was No. 1 for seven weeks. (Elvisβs version, from his movie Blue Hawaii, peaked at No. 2 in February 1962.)
22. Elvisβs βThe Wonder of Youβ from 1970 was his only top 10 hit that was recorded live. He recorded it at one his shows in Las Vegas in February of that year.
23. Elvisβs 1958 hit βOne Nightβ was originally written as βOne Night (of Sin).β The original title was considered too risquΓ©. (Times have changed.)
24. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote or co-wrote six of Elvisβs top 10 hits β more than any other songwriters.
25. Mac Davis is the only writer of a top 10 Elvis hit who went on to have a top 10 hit of his own. Davis wrote two top 10 hits for Elvis (βIn the Ghettoβ and βDonβt Cry Daddyβ). He went on to have two top 10 hits of his own (βBaby Donβt Get Hooked on Meβ and βStop and Smell the Rosesβ).
