Amaranthine hated them. She hated everything that had to do with angels and demons. They were all a race of disgusting creations and she was no better. it was fair enough to say she hated herself for being one of them.

Now her dislike to the one she had come across multiple times had increased to a tenfold. Why didn’t it surprise her that Maddox would too show his face up in a scene like this. Body splattered with blood of the disgrace SHE should have gotten rid of.  

❝ I don’t fuckin’ have time for your bullshit maddox. That was my kill and now you cost me important information.❞ Silver eyes glistened brightly with hatred and annoyance.

Shotgun loaded and pointed towards the pest that had taken out an informative showing no signs of hesitation. Now how she was to find the location of his cross road demon?   ❝ You know what, it does suck to suck right? ❞ A sly smile spread across her lips. The sound of the safety clip begin removed echoed throughout the abandoned warehouse as she raised an brow and directed the barrel of the weapon to aim for Cambion’s knee cap.

❝ How bad would it ruin your night, if i just shot ya in the kneecap right now. You know what they say right? And eye for an eye? I’m more like a dead body for a knee cap. so you tell me, should i just shoot you down right now and call it a night? I’m sure holy water soaked ammo would just be a highlight for you.❞

Did she think he was a demon? An angel? Apparently, she knew enough to shoot him with holy water, which would probably burn, since he felt decidedly divine today. It would burn like a motherfucker, take awhile to heal-- but fatal? As if.

He didn’t know what Amara was up to, and he didn’t care. He had a file on her back home, tracing some of her usual haunts, targets she often had, but that was about it. Her file was sparse; he could admit to not giving Amara and her brand of angelic fuckery more than a passing thought until he was staring down the barrel of her gun.

Maddox sneered.  ❝ I’m not sure pissing me off would be the greatest use of your time. Cause if you think shooting me will go unretaliated, you better fucking think again. ❞

He jut his chin forward, just daring her to do it. He never minded going home blood splattered.

”But..” Kyungsoo begins, his brows pinching together ever so slightly. He keeps his gaze fixed on the ground and blinks once, then twice, collecting messy thoughts to forge coherent phrases. “It has to matter. Being human, even only half-human, has to make some difference. Sulfur, iron, salt.. I get it. They’ll always have an effect on me, but.. Humans fight. Some may give up, or lose.. But some of them win. No matter how weak or small that part of me is, I want to hold onto it. I’m not a hundred percent demon. That has to mean something.”

Maddox shouldn’t hate him for it, and he does, a little bit. Still so hopeful. So idealistic, if demons could have an ideal that wasn’t blood and gore and hell on earth. Idealistic because the worst monsters Maddox had ever seen were humans.

“That’s... not quite what I was getting at.” His face was still passive, but he could rarely move his face in line with what he was feeling. Beaten out of him, at some point, probably in hell, or the last time he shed a tear watching someone else get tortured, because of him. 

“Shit, I’m not really a teacher, so I don’t know how to talk about this but...” he sucked in a breath. He could ramble on for an hour if left to his own devices. His own personal discovery of being a demon, of being not human, not at all had been a long and winding road, and it was starting to feel impossible to connect anymore.

“Humans are humans, so you’d think that they, of all the creatures, would have humanity. But they don’t. I just... meant that you shouldn’t focus on your human side to stay in touch with your humanity.”

Images of torture, of human souls ripped apart and tortured and turned into something disfigured and wrong came to him. Faces of those who’d willingly put their souls on the line, that willingly let their eyes glaze over black. 

They were humans. Maybe he’d missed it, and knowing his get away tongue, he had missed his point, but being a human didn’t mean you had humanity. 

A muffled ‘no’ is his reply to the taller male’s first question, though it’s quite obvious from the glassiness of his eyes that, yes, he is crying. But the inquiries that follow are the ones that pull his attention from the turmoil in his head, being turned right-side-up once more allowing him to think with a remarkable spike in clarity. Go figure.

It was rare that Maddox truly felt bad about the supernatural he took in to rehabilitate-- an effect of the job. The same people that pushed his mortality buttons are the same people  who murdered and killed and ripped apart lives with no remorse. It was a precarious battle; that need and drive to do what was considered evil and immoral, but for some, it was a matter of life or death. 

Amorality isn’t something that was easily understood by humanity.

“Let go of being whatever weird idea of being ‘normal’ you have in your head. Just forget it. The thing about being any sort of demon is that the other side of you, particularly the human side, doesn’t matter. You’re always going to a demon. The sulfur, the salt lines, the iron bars smacking into the back of your head; that’s all you now, buddy.”

Maddox frowned. “You need to relax. Kyungsoo, you know you’re a cambion right? Do you even know what the means?”

The sweet, subtle scent of tangerines fills the area, dances on the tips of their noses with feather-light steps and leaps. A terra cotta planting pot sits several feet away, dark soil creeping out from a crack in the side, and a smear of red stands out against the earthy, orange hues. Move the pot, Maddox had said. And move it, Kyungsoo did. But neither of them had quite expected him to be so out of tune with his own powers that he’d send the heavy pot right into his own face. Immediately, he had fallen to the ground, hands cupped to catch the blood, and half an hour later, they’re working with fruits now. No matter how small they are, it still hurts like hell when a tangerine flies into his face as fast as a bullet.

He couldn’t be that mad at the kid. He was trying after all, and telekinesis was a pain.

He was trying. Maddox would let it slide.

“So, what went wrong there, huh?” the Nephalem asked, his arms coming up to rest behind his head. He tilted his head, more for Kyungsoo’s comfort more than actually needing to move when he used his own powers, and tugged the orange from the window it had gone flying into.

Before Kyungsoo could answer, Maddox answered his own question. “Telekinesis, at first, requires utmost concentration. Eventually, you’ll be able to use it flippantly. Observe.”
