I’ve really been wondering lately how conscious Thjazi is in Julien’s shadow. Because yes it’s his soul, yes he’s done stuff that’s both saved and fucked with Julien, but are these active choices that Thjazi is making? Is the shadow doing things on its own & because it’s Thjazi’s soul they can’t not be things that he would do anyways? Cause it seems like Thjazi now falls into the category of shades, which don’t have awareness of their new state & are instinct-driven to anchor to a new body, so i think i can see both arguments being plausible. But also, afaik, we still don’t really know anything about the Scar or the full extent of its effects on souls (especially ones that manage to escape the Tachonis’ clutches) so i’m wondering if it could have damaged Thjazi’s soul in some way or another in addition to it being separated from his body

I absolutely don't believe he's fully awake and aware and in his right mind. I absolutely do not believe it's like he's just as he was standing right behind Julien like someone standing on the other side of a screen door. I was surprised when fandom started talking about Thjazi like he was making conscious deliberate choices after death. I assume that, to thr extent that his soul is conscious and awarw, he's probably just getting flashes of what's happening in the land of the living - disjointed flashes with no context or explanation. Think of how confused the entire party has been trying to piece together the actions and motivations of one man. Now think about how confusing it would be for one man to piece together the actions and motivations of 13 people but you only see glimpses of what's happening from (unbeknownst to you) the perspective of one of them. Add to that, I also assume extended existence as a shade has some effect on his mental state. Brennan told Occtis that if he didn't make a point to rest and meditate, his mind would start to change. I look back at the actions of Julien's shadoe and see a being ruled by id and impulse. It's Thjazi, but a Thjazi not fully in control of his higher mental functions. Maybe I'm wrong; we'll see as episodes resume. But I agree; I don't think he's fully conscious and aware.
