Re-reading some chapters and I just now noticed how upset Shamrock looks at the mention of his brother. Bro is distraught. Dude is speechless. Synonym is relevant word.

Chapter 1188 is making me think a lot about what Imu and Joyboy's relationship could have been. They are obviously on completely opposing sides in every way, but Imu talks about Joyboy in a manner that clearly shows respect for him, and when he said "so why dost thou remind Mu of that time?" To Luffy at the start of the chapter, right after a flashback of what seems to be their (Imu & Joyboy's) first meeting, I felt like there was an emotional aspect behind it that goes deeper than just that of enemies, whatever that emotion might be.
I might be reading too much into it, but looking back upon earlier writing, I honestly don't believe that you can read too much into One Piece. My theory is that they were friends of some sort, or at least much more friendly rivals, before splitting apart due to their opposing ideals or possibly some sort of betrayal, but I also think that it's a bit too early to be sure of anything.
I'm interested in what everyone else thinks of this too, so please share your theories or other thoughts if you have any.
Personally, I believe that they’re brothers. I think that theory could be cool and kinda makes sense if you go with the whole dark and light thing. regardless if imu was ‘dark’ all along or not.
The big bad controlling the world might be nothing more than a brother who got betrayed (or felt betrayed) and became the thing we see now (as his body doesn’t last long outside his realm) Joyboy might have died but his spirit prevailed, and deemed Luffy worthy of restoring the world and spread hope/joy.
Idk if there’s obvious things to contradict this theory, details missed etc but I believe there’s at least space for a little bit of this sksksks
I feel like the scene at the start of 1188 with Imu and Joyboy talking makes this unlikely due to it feeling like their first time talking with how Joyboy did not seem to recognize Imu's name or react in a very familiar way, instead simply introducing himself and giving a non-personal greeting. This could be a Shanks and Shamrock situation where one of them was separated somehow and they grew up without each other, which would also make Shanks and Shamrock foreshadowing along with being parallels; however, I personally think that having them not grow up together if they are siblings would tarnish the themes, as we would also be bringing in how ones environment shapes them too instead of it being purely about the people, which is not what I (although this is getting into purely opinion territory) think would be the best or most satisfying in this specific situation with what these specific characters represent, and is also something that we already have with Shanks and Shamrock.
I do find the idea of them being siblings to be a very interesting and appealing idea though, especially considering the both overt and subtle biblical theming that both characters have and with Jesus & Satan both being created by God. I very well could be misinterpreting that scene and they did know each other before that, but that's just something that we will have to wait to find out.
Yes that’s true, unless it could be like Luffy and Ace and Sabo. They’re not biologically related they met by chance (more so in Sabo’s case) so there’s always a first meeting. But we still see them as brothers, this could work better because we would have a parallel with the main character… (except for what follows HDJDJDJDH)
Of course, like you said we will have to wait to find out. I’m still very curious about their identity, if they just ate a devil fruit or if there are more in nature. Im curious to have more details so we can put all the puzzle pieces together
That's a really good point! I didn't think of that. That would definitely fit the already established found family themes and (like you mentioned) create more similarities between Luffy & Joyboy. Very exited for new chapters to come out
