These gentle, 400-pound giants are splashing back from the brink of extinction.
Green sea turtles have been an iconic endangered species since the 1980s, mostly due to bycatch in fishing nets and taking adults and eggs for food. I have core childhood memories of watching Steve Irwin talk about sea turtle conservation in front of a beach full of nesting green sea turtles.
After 45 years of conservation efforts, their population now meets the IUCN criteria for Least Concern rather than Endangered.
For a species with such a slow life history (it takes green sea turtles decades to reach sexual maturity) and a nearly global population, this is a Really Big Deal. This is the kind of long term conservation victory that many of the amazing humans who started working on green sea turtle conservation back in the 80s didn't live to see.
Just because something isn't fixed right away doesn't mean it won't ever be fixed. Just because the work is slow doesn't mean it isn't worth doing.
Me trying to convince my workings dogs it is in fact VERY hot out and no they are not getting exercise today:

a funny thing about having conversations with people within institutions (academic in this case but also others) about gatekeeping, is that you end up having a conversation over and over in which you're like, "hey this alligator spike pit moat you have erected around your institution is keeping a lot of people out," and they're like, "well *I* navigated the alligator spike pit moat just fine," and you're like, "right. by dint of us having this conversation, you within the institution and me without, it is understood that you navigated the alligator spike pit moat. due to that being an inherent requirement of entering the institution," and they're like, "I don't think you understand the prestigious history of our alligator spike pit moat," and you're like, "is there a reason why there needs to be an alligator spike pit moat encircling the concept of higher education?" and they're like, "look, the alligator spike pit moat isn't for everyone. some people just aren't cut out for the alligator spike pit moat :)" and you're like, "right, yeah, like disabled people and people coming from poverty or unstable home environments or underserved communities or people dealing with difficult to navigate life events like pregnancy or abuse or prison or addiction or the death of a loved one, for example" and they're like, "how dare you imply that we are keeping those people out on purpose. it's their own problem if they can't wrestle the alligators and avoid the spikes while also disabled and/or poor and/or pregnant etc" and you're like, "well that seems evil," and they're like, "it sounds like maybe you're just bitter about the alligator spike pit moat because of your totally random individual experience with ONE bad alligator spike pit moat. have you considered therapy?" and you're like, "did you know that there's some patterns here in terms of how y'all are handling this stuff?" and they're like, "actually yes. we even have a department of alligator spike pit studies :)" and you're like, "that's great, how do I get access to and participate in those conversations?" and they're like, "well firstly you must cross the alligator spike pit moat"
if you can document that you have a medical condition that might make it challenging for you to navigate the alligator spike pit moat, they'll give you an extra 20 minutes to complete your navigation of the alligator spike pit moat
the thing that gets left out of the spay abort in shelters discussion is prenatal stress. even if the dam doesnt have to whelp in the stressful environment of a shelter, even if you have a calm foster that can take her in and provide appropriate socialization for the puppies: you don't know what that bitch has experienced before she came to you. so on top of unnecessarily adding more dogs into this world, you are adding dogs those whose stress response system has been primed to respond more strongly to stressors in the environment before they are even born, leading to dogs that are prone to environmental sensitivity, behavioral and arousal issues, which impacts welfare and leads to more adoption failures.

part of the curse of being deeply aware and knowledgable about dog health & temperament and health testing in regards to dog breeding, dog longevity, temperamental stability etc. is the people around you WILL still get the most unethically produced puppies you've ever seen and you kinda can't really go off on them about it so you get to sit there and be like "he's cute!"

So Majestic. Very fancy.
Ears!
How to know your dog likes the new puppy: he puts up with this.
I think it's so funny how we bred JOBS into dogs. I have two shih tzus and they were bred to be lap dogs. All they care about is looking cute and cuddling with people. Meanwhile my grandma has a border collie and that dog needs to feel so useful all the time, he acts like he will pass away if he doesn't have a job to do constantly
On one hand this is extremely fucking funny, but on the other hand, it really boggles my mind how many people punish their dogs for just⌠doing the thing they were bred to do.
Your husky isnât âhyperactiveâ, itâs bred to pull sleds for 8 hours straight and you have it in a 400 sq ft yard.
Your English sheepdog isnât âpushyâ, itâs bred to herd sheep, and you have neither to space nor the herd to allow it.
Your terrier isnât ânippyâ, itâs bred to kill rats and your hamster looks a hell of a lot like one.
Your Catahoula isnât âmean to animalsâ, itâs bred to hunt any and all animals smaller than it, and you didnât acclimate it to your cat.
Your Lhasa Apso isnât âyappyâ, itâs bred to bark at any tiny noise and alert watchmen to intruders
Like Jesus Christ, if you canât provide an environment where your dog canât fulfill its literal life purpose, maybe?? Donât get that dog??? And if you do, maybe know the breed characteristics so you can redirect those traits into more constructive outlets????
Both your most common doodle's parts (labra and golden) want to hunt and retrieve water birds so the best suggestion I can give y'all is congratulations on your new duck hunting hobby.
#people will overlook the perfect breeds to suit their needs based on just their looks#and get a work dog because it looks cool

Any time someone sees Herschel and says "AWWW I want a Corgi <3" (because he is Very Cute (TM)), I immediately reply: "Do not get a Corgi unless you have a job for it to do. They were bred to bully livestock across the hills of Wales. This is basically a Border Collie that knows he is cute enough to get away with murder. If you get one and it doesn't have a job, it will apply its livestock-bullying instincts to YOU. Herschel's job specifically is to help manage my crippling ADHD, because I don't have a bull for him to micromanage." This gets me odd looks at the home depot but it does get the point across.
I have a working line German shepherd as my current service dog. I meet so many people asking me about the breed and saying they're considering one after seeing mine, sometimes even as they're first dog.
To which I pull up his lips and show them his inch long teeth before saying something like "This is a predator that can run faster, jump higher, and climb trees better than most people. His bred job is bitting. The "perfect" dog you see is two years of my blood, sweat, and tears. You want a golden retriever, or perhaps just a cat."
(I can only imagine how much worse this will be with my new Koolie when we start going out.)
My new sport dog/prospect dog arrived yesterday afternoon! Bird is finally here.

can you explain what you mean that conformation is steeped in white supremacy? like i think i know what you mean but im not 100% sure. also your dogs are adorable <3
The dog fancy as we know it today comes out of Victorian Britain and is a sibling of the eugenics movement happening there around the same time.
Prior to the Victorian age dog breeds were not what we know they as today. Dogs of course had many different functions and different forms to follow those functions, but they would be better classified as "types" than what we now call breeds. They did not have closed gene pools and there was a lot more ability to have gene flow between types of dogs (yay genetic diversity!)
Eventually the Victorians narrow dogs from types to breeds, closed stud books which narrowed the amount of gene flow allowed between dogs, and created "breed standards" as we know them today. This set up a documented and desirable look dogs had to meet to be considered worthy enough to continue their genes to the next generation. It is this type of language and thought process, the "preservation" and "improvement" language that echoes that of the eugenicists at the time who were actively trying to eliminate black, poor, and "mentally defective" people from the British population while justifying it with science. Eugenics is racism AND colonialism. straight up. So. So. Much of this language is passed down in the dog fancy to this day (as well as a whole lot of classism).
Additionally, once the dog fancy grew outside of Britain, the British Kennel Club started to classify dogs they found outside of the UK and classify them into more restricted breeds. This included indigenous dog types from many parts of the world. These breeds were often stripped of their true indigenous identity and taken from indigenous control (because white people thought they "knew better" and how to "improve" these dogs, given slurs as breed names, were given standards that narrowed their expected look to an extreme, and were put into the dog fancy to have their studbooks closed.
To this day many (most) dog breeds indigenous to colonized areas (north/south/central americas, africa, asia, etc.) have two versions of their dogs: the one the dog fancy deems "correct" and "pure" enough to be put on display in conformation shows and the ones still present in their indigenous homelands where said dogs must go through extensive review to even be consider for "outcrossing" into the kennel club registered population (if that's even an option).
To this day most kennel clubs members are white, conformation is overall unwelcoming to non-white people, kennel clubs are still resistant to outcrossing in most instances despite science on gene diversity saying otherwise, keep studbooks closed, are resistant to changing slur based breed names even upon indigenous request, create new breeds that try and replicate what they view as 'mythologically indigenous" breeds that have no actual basis in any indigenous heritage.
Like i love dogs and i love purebred dogs (yay predictability!), but part of decolonizing our thinking is understanding that a huge portion of the dog fancy is not only resistant to change and modernization, but resistant to modernizing away from white supremacist ideals and false sciences that make up the basis of the dog fancy and uphold colonial oppression to this day AND resistant to modernizing away from the racism and classism still casually present amongst its membership to make the fancy more welcoming and inclusive.
