Coming Back
I’ve been gone from Tumblr for years now—probably a decade—because Twitter was my online home.
No longer. Musk has made the place a hellhole.
So here I am, and the platform has changed *greatly* since I was last here! I’m a little disoriented, so bear with me as I find my way around.
We had our first very hard freeze two nights ago, so the trees have brightened up considerably, and their leaves are falling more rapidly now. I’m hurrying to put the garden “to bed” for the winter, pulling out dead plants (mostly tomatoes and peppers), and mulching the blueberries & asparagus plants against the coming cold.
Now Mose Allison is gone. What a week!
“I first ran for Congress in 1999, and I got beat. I just got whooped. I had been in the state legislature for a long time, I was in the minority party, I wasn’t getting a lot done, and I was away from my family and putting a lot of strain on Michelle. Then for me to run and lose that bad, I was thinking maybe this isn’t what I was cut out to do. I was forty years old, and I’d invested a lot of time and effort into something that didn’t seem to be working. But the thing that got me through that moment, and any other time that I’ve felt stuck, is to remind myself that it’s about the work. Because if you’re worrying about yourself—if you’re thinking: ‘Am I succeeding? Am I in the right position? Am I being appreciated?’ – then you’re going to end up feeling frustrated and stuck. But if you can keep it about the work, you’ll always have a path. There’s always something to be done.”

I work in a community where otherwise intelligent people believe that being LGBT is a “choice,” and supporting the LGBT community is basically “indulging” or “coddling” LGBT folks. The best antidote to this mindset, I’ve discovered, is simply getting to know LGBT folks; befriending them, and listening to the stories they have to tell.
A simple question: why would anyone who faces the discrimination, bias, violence, and hatred experienced by LGBT folks “choose” it, if it were simply a choice?

Shake the Dust by Anis Mojgani (via Vimeo)
Sometimes stupid laws aren't merely stupid, but tragic. This kind of thing is heartbreaking in its frequency.
The need for more studies confirming that we’re approaching an irreversible ecological crisis, the tipping point beyond human control, is over. James Hansen, the world’s most eminent climatologist is so certain of this evidence that he’s added civil disobedience to his resistance repertoire.
Harvest
The corn is down around my house. On three sides I can see to the Horizon, or forest, for the First time since May. In the garden, tomatoes are Dying back, and the last of the Peppers turn red in the cool Autumn moonlight.
A startling realization: My neighbor mono crops A few thousand acres, but I feed more people from my garden.
This is for Karina, hopefully singing her soul to heaven in the next few days.

Box Turtle Time
.
There are both Yellow and Painted Box Turtles on rural roads in greater frequency this time of year, due to the mating thing.
Please be aware, and watch out for the turtles as you’re driving down the road.

Happy 72nd Birthday, Bob! Here's a recording, 52 years old now, which we hope is not true, even though it's a cool song. Recorded live with radio interviewer Cynthia Gooding, from WBAI, "Folksinger's Choice," January 13, 1962 I love listening to the interview part after the song.
Gazing out into the skies on the eve of the longest night; Here we dream with open eyes, on the eve of a Holy night. Choirs of stars, high in the air, Shine like some amazing silent prayer! The Earth is still and calm; Everyone can hear the Psalm.
Malcolm Dalglish & the Ooolites: Hymnody of Earth. The first song, called "Psalm of Solstice"

When November brings The poppies on Remembrance Day When the Vicar comes to say May God bless them every one, Lest we forget our sons:
We will remember them, remember them, remember them; We will remember them, remember them, remember them…
