Donate money online:

The Red Cross has started an emergency appeal for help. To donate $5 by phone, text REDCROSS to 30333. Text FIRES to 45678 to donate $10. Both the federal and provincial governments will match donations to the Red Cross.

The Wood Buffalo Food Bank is accepting donations through PayPal on its website.

The Salvation Army is also collecting financial donations online.

Emergency shelter:

Airbnb has activated its Disaster Response Tool to help provide free shelter until May 21. Residents in nearby areas can list their properties on the website.

Those able to provide accommodations can also sign up on website YMMfire.ca.

Displaced pets:

The Fort McMurray SPCA is working to reunite displaced residents with pets they were forced to leave behind. They are accepting donations to help efforts.

The Edmonton Humane Society is preparing to accept animals left without owners, and provide temporary shelter to pets with owners who have left their homes.

Social media efforts:

Facebook group Fort Mac Fire Donations is crowdsourcing donations for items such as toiletries, socks and pillows, as needed.

There are teachers, health care workers, restaurant owners, wait staff, store workers, and so many more people there. This isn’t just an oil plant burning, it’s an entire city, and you can in no way justify wishing ill upon ANYONE just because of your anti-oil beliefs.

This effects those other workers, the stay at home moms, babies, children.

Next time you want to post “they deserved it” think about the kids who are separated from a parent or both.

The wives or husbands who are alone with their kids travelling, leaving a spouse back to fight the fire.

The doctors, nurses, housekeeping workers, who’s place of employment is now gone.

The school teachers who might not ever see their students again because everyone’s lives are being uprooted.

The aged patients with Alzheimer’s who may not even KNOW what is going on right now, and are absolutely terrified, who may have just lost EVERYTHING they worked so hard for.

The small children who won’t see their pet again or favourite blanket again because there was no time to run home and don’t understand what is happening or why they’re sleeping in a car and driving through fire.

And the oilfield workers? They are just trying to make a living and support their families.

They’re paying for a new baby on the way, their teenagers braces, children’s college funds, or their senior parents nursing homes.

They aren’t there with intentions of “destroying the land”, that’s precisely why oil companies employ environmentalists. That’s why they hire tree planters to try to restore the environment.

Also, for you to be posting garbage like that on Facebook, you obviously don’t have a problem with hiding behind that electronic screen that was made using oil.

You don’t seem to have a problem with driving your cars that you fill up with gas, and runs with oil. Oh drive a Prius? It was still made with materials using oil.

You take a bus? That uses gas and oil.

You ride a bike? Again, most likely made in a factory using oil.

So maybe think before you post, this is not about politics, or “Karma”, this is people’s lives, homes, jobs, and families. Right now it shouldn’t matter if you’re NDP, Liberal, Conservative, or any other political belief. Right now it should be about being decent human beings helping fellow humans.

Now is not the time to make snarky posts, and you’re only making yourself look like an inhumane fool with no heart and no conscience by writing those things.

Doesn’t matter what Notley says, this province SHOULD be declared a state of emergency with fires starting everywhere, and you don’t wish ill on people when their lives are literally being torn apart.

If you’re in a safe zone with no fires around count your blessing, hug your babies super tight today, and send a prayer to Fort Mac.

My heart certainly goes out to anyone from Fort Mac, and all their friends and families who are worried for them.
