Summary:

Carmy lights a cigarette, takes a slow drag, then exhales a cloud of smoke into the cool air before sitting down at the picnic table near the door.

Behind him he can hear the muffled sounds of Eva’s birthday party coming from the restaurant.

It had all started to feel like a little too much, so he had to step out for a minute. But surprisingly it wasn’t because he was starting to have a panic attack. In fact, while he was standing in the restaurant surrounded by his friends and family, he realized he loved those people so much it felt like his chest was going to burst. He’s never felt anything like this before.

Unfortunately, it only makes his dilemma about the internship worse.

He’d been convinced leaving this industry was the only way forward. A clean break. The start of something new. But when he started talking about the shitshow of a service during the interview, he’d caught himself having second thoughts. Because he realized that for the first time in a long time, he enjoyed doing this work again.

And most of all, he enjoys working under Sydney.

It’s the hands on the back of each other’s necks, Carmen cupping Sydney’s face, her burying herself in the hug and squeezing him half to death, rocking back and forth, laughing and crying, knowing they’ll be okay even if and when it hurts. Knowing they have each other! The love was there and they just had to find it again.
