Sometimes I just donât know you nature.
And here we have exhibit I-donât-even-know, but I like it.
What are birds?
No animals life is worth a 'cute' or 'funny' photo
Animal abuse is still animal abuse, whether it looks âcuteâ or not
iâm confused, are there animals being killed for the sake of memes?
A lot of people will post photos of their animals in dangerous or harmful situations (e.g. a cat with a small reptile or bird that can get injured or killed ) for the sake of a âcuteâ photo, or seeing their animal in a situation where the animal is in pain but they take photos or videos before helpingÂ
Also the situation awhile ago where people posed for photos and selfies of the dolphin which resulted in itâs death
Also a lot of wildlife photographs are actually taken by animals that have been chilled or outright killed and propped up with strings that are then photoshopped out by photographers in SE Asia. I know this is kind of tangential, but in general we have this attitude towards things we find cute without thinking about where these cute images came from. Perhaps youâve seen these picture or others like them:
At first glance, theyâre adorable. From a human perspective, that first frog looks like heâs smiling! That second frog is grumpy! But in reality these animals are both under a lot of stress- and not because itâs raining. These are of animals propped up by strings and very often put in refrigerators to make them lethargic. The second frogâs legs are horribly bruised and the first frogâs fingers are posed in a way unnatural to frogs. The mouth is weird, too, suggesting the critter is subject to a series of stressful pressures that have been photoshopped away. Hereâs an article about it! This sort of thing happens in the rest of the world, too; hereâs an Audubon article about faked âwildâlife photos in the States. Large and small animals are subjected to these photographs, which are often fatal; lions, tigers, and wolves for example are bred because the babies are in high demand for commercial photography⌠but when they grow up they are sold for canned hunts.(More on that here.) Too often do we just see a cute animal photograph and go âawwâ and move on, but in reality many of these photographs are decidedly inhumane. From the last article I linked- â Your attention is a currency, and how you spend it matters. If you engage with content that is produced via animal abuse, then you will contribute to the profitability of that industry. Conversely, if you boycott this content and only engage with reputable sources, then you help to tackle the problem.â
I did not know this.
How do we know if the sources are reputable and/or do not commit animal cruelty to get the photos?
One of the ways you can see if sources are reputable or if there is any controversy surrounding the photo(s) is by doing a google reverse image search
I personally just drag and drop photos into google and look up what the results are. Typically if there is controversy around it and itâs a popular photo results will pull up indicating that.Â
The first link for the frog âridingâ the beetle photo is this which goes into details on different ways you can look at the photo from a critical standpoint and see how likely it is to happen in nature.Â
Some basic questions when you see a photo are:
Is it a natural act? Is this something that could reasonably happen in real life and something an animal would naturally do (often for many seconds if not minutes to capture the photo)
Is it from a credible source? Is this a photo from somewhere like National Geographic or is this from a persons blog or a random photographer. Or, is it a photo with no source at all?Â
Can anyone verify the story? If the person was apart of a film crew, can anyone else confirm, or is it just one person saying âX happened, it was incredible!âÂ
Does the photographer have a history of âstunningâ photos that seem too good to be true? If you search the name do similar âamazingly cuteâ photos show up? Or are they accredited with a reputable source for previous photos?
Does the story match up with the animals photographed? Is someone claiming to have taken a photo of a Ball Python (native to Africa) in the Canadian Rockies attempting to eat itâs natural diet of cats? Sometimes this may be hard to tell, but a reliable photographer will give lots of details of where and when the photo is taken typically. A common way of telling is does the photograph location match up with the animals natural habitat?Â
Is the story being told believable/ Is the photos story suddenly tugging on your heartstrings (positive or negatively)? Is the story something that may have a little bit of anthropomorphism involves (e.g. in Face-Off with a Lion you are told a believable situation with the addition from the photographer anthromorphising saying âtake a picture and save our speciesâ which is realistic, vs the âthis frog was being very intelligent and hide under a leaf for 30 minutes to hide from the rainâ which seems both u
Do the animals involved look stressed or unnatural? This link shows a lot of photos that can be manipulated
Something I found while researching is there is a site called PetaPixel which will sometimes confirm photo stories or speak about the possible ways the photo is manipulated, so they may be an additional resource when researching photos for abuse
